Chapter 24 The Stepmother Arrives

As the train continued its journey, more and more people boarded it.

Not only were all the seats full, but the aisles were also packed with people.

The noise woke Zhao Qinglan, who had regained some energy, and she couldn't go back to sleep.

Seeing that her daughter was still sleeping soundly in her arms, she looked at Li Huai, only to find that the person opposite her had turned into an old woman.

Just as I was wondering what was going on, I saw Li Huai standing in the aisle next to me.

"Have you been awake all this time?" she asked with concern.

"I'm not sleepy, I don't need to sleep," Li Huai smiled.

"Then you sit down with Xiaoduo for a while, I'll stand," Zhao Qinglan suggested.

"It's alright, you can sit down. I'm not tired."

“I’ve been sitting for too long, I should get up and stand up,” Zhao Qinglan insisted.

Li Huai then switched places with her.

Having sat for so long, with a child on top of her, Zhao Qinglan really wanted to stand up.

The two had just switched places when the old lady asked them a question in a friendly manner.

"A couple, right?"

Zhao Qinglan nodded.

"Is he visiting relatives?" the old woman guessed, looking at Li Huai's military uniform.

"I guess so." Zhao Qinglan didn't explain further, after all, divorce and remarriage were still rare these days, and mentioning it would definitely attract attention.

Because of the large number of people, the train didn't smell very good. It's fortunate that it's cold now; if it were hot, the mixed smells would be even worse.

After standing for about half an hour, Li Huai was about to switch places with Zhao Qinglan.

Knowing that Li Huai was in good health, Zhao Qinglan did not insist.

Xiao Duo didn't wake up until almost lunchtime, and as soon as she got up, she said she was thirsty.

Zhao Qinglan quickly picked up the water bottle and gave her daughter some water. There were too many people in the corridor, and it was inconvenient to go to the toilet. She wouldn't drink unless she was very thirsty.

After her daughter finished her drink, she looked at Li Huai again. "Do you want some?"

Li Huai shook his head.

People in the carriage started eating their meals one after another, most of which were food they had brought themselves.

Li Huai realized that there weren't many pancakes and boiled eggs left, so he said to Zhao Qinglan, "I'm going out to buy some food. You and Xiaoduo wait here."

"Okay, go and come back soon."

Li Huai had always been quite generous to Zhao Qinglan and her daughter, buying them a meat dish, a vegetable dish, and a few steamed buns when he returned.

On the train, especially in the hard-seat carriages, not many people are willing to spend money to buy food in the dining car, even though food on the train is free.

Li Huai brought back a plate of incredibly fragrant braised pork; it was so tempting!

Those around them couldn't help but swallow hard when they smelled it.

However, Li Huai wasn't that foolish. He was young and strong, so he could give his seat to the older people, but he couldn't share the food.

They just kept urging Zhao Qinglan and the others to eat quickly.

If we don't eat now while everyone else is eating, it will be awkward if we're the only ones eating when everyone else has stopped.

Zhao Qinglan was not a stingy person. After leaving the Wang family, she carried a lot of money and had been eating well with her daughter.

Now, seeing braised pork and steamed buns doesn't excite them as much. They take out the remaining pancakes and boiled eggs, and the three of them quickly start eating.

In this day and age, being able to eat one's fill is a great blessing, and food is precious, so no one has the audacity to ask for more.

Of course, it's also possible that the clothes Li Huai was wearing had some intimidating effect.

After more than a day's journey, the train finally arrived at its destination.

Zhao Qinglan's health isn't in the best shape right now, and after sitting on the train for more than a day, she's really starting to feel some back pain.

As soon as they got off the train, they saw two people in military uniforms on the platform.

"Li Huai." Zhou Hai ran over with the young soldier.

"This must be your sister-in-law," Zhou Hai said with a smile, looking at Zhao Qinglan.

"Qinglan, this is our Political Commissar Zhou," Li Huai quickly introduced.

"Hello, Political Commissar Zhou." Zhao Qinglan quickly put down her bag and reached out her hand.

"Hello, hello." Zhou Hai immediately shook hands.

"Xiao Xu, quickly grab all the things." Zhou Hai shook hands and then looked at the young soldier beside him.

The young soldier quickly grabbed the bag from the ground and then tried to snatch the bag from Li Huai's hand.

There were three bags in total. The young soldier carried two, Li Huai took one, and Zhou Hai carried Xiao Duo.

"This little girl is so cute. Come on, the car's outside." After praising Xiao Duo, Zhou Hai called everyone to leave.

The group got into a military jeep parked outside the station.

People exiting the station couldn't help but take a second look at the large jeep.

These days, only government agencies own cars, especially large jeeps, which are basically only seen in the military.

Zhou Hai sat in the passenger seat, while Li Huai and the other two sat in the back.

As soon as they got in the car, Li Huai asked, "Political Commissar, have my two sons caused you any trouble?"

"They're fine. They eat and sleep well and haven't caused any trouble. They just run around and cause a ruckus with the other boys in the yard all day long. But boys are boys, it would be abnormal if they didn't make a fuss."

Hearing that he hadn't caused any trouble, Li Huai felt relieved. He was worried that the regimental commander might have been hiding something from him over the phone.

Even though they had a car, it still took them about two hours to reach the troop's encampment.

Li Huai just got back, and the house isn't all set up yet, so naturally he can't work.

Sun Shengli had already communicated with Zhou Hai, and Li Huai was asked to stay at home for two more days after he returned.

The Jeep pulled up right up to Li Huai's house. As soon as the car stopped, the children from the residential area surrounded it.

The eldest son, Yan Sen, was leading his younger brother and friends in a battle when he saw the car parked in front of his house and immediately realized what was happening.

"Dad." Although he had been full of resentment towards his father before, after not seeing him for many days, Da Wa actually missed his father very much.

Besides missing them, he was also a little panicked. His mother had just abandoned them, would his father also abandon them?
