Zhao Qinglan first talked to her eldest son.
"Big brother, what are your thoughts on our yard?" After all, Big brother is the only one in the family living in Beijing right now.
"Mom, what could I possibly think? If I hadn't gone to a military academy, I wouldn't have been able to stay on campus during my second year. But our military academy is very strict, so it's impossible to stay off campus."
"I see."
Her own courtyard, especially one passed down from her mother-in-law, held extraordinary significance. Zhao Qinglan would neither sell nor rent it out.
But it's not good for a house to be empty for a long time if no one lives there. Whether a house is occupied or not has a big impact. It's different when there are people around.
There are quite a few relatives in Beijing, but my uncle has a house allocated to him, my aunt's courtyard house is so big, why would she need to live in her own? As for my sister, her husband's family also has a house.
After thinking it over, I realized it's Wei Hong.
She quickly contacted Wei Hong.
Wei Hong knew about her coming to the capital, but thinking that she must have been having a lively time with her family the past two days, she told her that she would meet with her when she had more free time.
When Wei Hong learned that Grandpa Dou was hospitalized, she was shocked and immediately wanted to visit him.
"Alright, Grandpa Dou is fine and will be discharged soon. Let's go out and meet him so we can talk slowly."
The two met at a teahouse where they could listen to storytelling.
"Wei Hong, why don't you stay in my courtyard?" Zhao Qinglan suggested.
"No, I won't go. I'll just come over occasionally to check on the house for you." Wei Hong immediately refused.
"Oh dear, what am I going to do with my yard?" She was starting to worry.
Should we hire someone else to keep an eye on things? That's not impossible, but who else can she trust as much as the old man?
It was Wei Hong who gave her an idea. "Qinglan, you're good at running a food business, why don't you make use of that courtyard?"
Yes, there are some private restaurants in Beijing now located in courtyard houses.
However, this courtyard was left to my husband by my mother-in-law. Is it alright for me to use it to start a business?
Maybe we should discuss it with my husband when we get back.
She and Wei Hong started chatting again.
Wei Hong rarely contacts her family anymore, and even during the Spring Festival, she spends it alone in Beijing.
Seeing that she looked well, Zhao Qinglan even praised her, when she heard Wei Hong tell her something.
"Qinglan, I met someone who is very kind to me."
Seeing her slightly shy expression, Zhao Qinglan was pleasantly surprised.
"Who are you? What do you do?"
"He is a university professor. He was married, but his wife divorced him during a special period. He has no children and is now alone."
"A university professor, huh? That sounds pretty good. As long as he's good to you, that's better than anything else."
After her unfulfilled relationship with Liao Yunxiang, she became increasingly indifferent to matters of the heart, but unexpectedly, she met someone else by sheer chance.
Through Wei Hong's narration, Zhao Qinglan also learned about this professor.
He's quite knowledgeable, a bit of a bookworm, but has excellent character and values. He's very good at housework and has a bit of OCD.
After listening to Wei Hong recount many stories about her interactions with the professor, Zhao Qinglan smiled.
"Wow, we're already so familiar with each other."
Wei Hong was no longer an innocent girl, and she smiled and said, "Qinglan, I plan to date him some more. If it works out, I'll choose him."
"That's great! I'm really looking forward to your wedding."
Having witnessed the hardships Wei Hong went through, Zhao Qinglan especially hopes that her friend can find happiness.
Because of Wei Hong's situation, she returned home in a good mood.
However, as soon as she entered the house, she saw her cousin Yunxiang, and Zhao Qinglan's smile immediately disappeared.
"Yunxiang is here."
Liao Yunxiang spent his 30th birthday with his mother and uncle, but he had to return to Hong Kong on the first day of the Lunar New Year because of some business. He just got off the plane and came over.
While the elders were chatting and laughing, Liao Yunxiang went to Zhao Qinglan's side.
"How is my cousin?" he asked in a low voice.
Who else could she be? Although he respected Wei Hong's opinion and let go, he couldn't say that he didn't miss her at all.
As soon as he saw Zhao Qinglan, he couldn't help but ask.
Although she knew that telling the truth would be cruel to her cousin, Zhao Qinglan also wanted her cousin to let go completely, so she replied, "Yunxiang, Wei Hong is doing very well. She has a boyfriend she's getting along with, and they'll probably get married soon."
Liao Yunxiang was shocked. After a few seconds, he smiled bitterly and said, "I wish her happiness."
Seeing her cousin leave looking somewhat dejected, Zhao Qinglan sighed silently.
Li Huai walked to his wife's side. "What's wrong?"
"It's okay, I'll tell you when I go to sleep."
When it was time for bed, she not only talked about Wei Hong, but also about her thoughts on the courtyard.
“Qinglan, since Mom left the house to us, she won’t interfere with what we do. She probably hopes this yard can be put to some use. Do whatever you want without worrying about anything.”
"How can you be so kind? Oh, I wish I could meet my mother-in-law."
Such good people died young, while those who made mistakes and did evil lived quite long lives.
Zhang Yu picked up Li Huai and the others, and Zhang's parents naturally found out.
During a family meal, Zhang's father couldn't help but mention, "Old Li always talks about his grandsons. It would be great if they could go and visit him."
He's retired now, and when he has free time he visits his old friends' homes or retirement homes, so he's seen Li Zhenhua quite a few times.
"Eat your food and mind your own business," Zhang's mother glared at her husband.
If Li Zhenhua hadn't brought this upon himself, he would be surrounded by children and grandchildren, enjoying a peaceful and happy family life.
