Jiang Manyue retreated vigilantly, worried about Qin Zhenbei's situation.
"Cough cough cough!" Chen Xiaofang ran out of the kitchen, covering her mouth and nose.
His face and nose were covered in dust, and were burnt from the fever.
"Auntie, there's a fire!" Her tears slid down her cheeks, leaving two marks.
"What?" Jiang Manyue was stunned for a moment, and Chen Zhigang's face turned pale.
"I-we didn't light the fire on purpose. I just wanted to cook."
Fire? She immediately headed towards the kitchen, only then did she realize that the smoke was coming from there.
A pile of firewood was lit on the ground, making crackling sounds.
The pot on top of the firewood had been burnt black.
Seeing this situation, Jiang Manyue immediately took the water and poured it on it and opened the window.
"Crash!" The firewood finally went out completely, and the choking smoke drifted out of the window.
The brother and sister stood by with their heads down, not daring to say a word, as if they had done something wrong.
"What are you doing?" Qin Zhenbei came back with the breakfast he had just bought outside in the morning.
As soon as I entered the house, I smelled the choking smell of smoke: "Is the house on fire?"
Chen Zhigang and Chen Xiaofang's faces were blackened by smoke, and they raised their eyes and looked over timidly.
"I, we didn't mean to do that. I just wanted to make breakfast."
"But we didn't have a stove at home, so we went outside to collect some firewood."
"Who knew the firewood was so damp that smoke would be everywhere once it was lit."
"What?" Qin Zhenbei looked at the dark kitchen. It turned out to be like this.
He just went out to buy breakfast, but the brother and sister almost burned down the house.
Jiang Manyue breathed a sigh of relief, almost thinking that they were planning to murder her.
It turned out to be a false alarm, but it was a pity that the kitchen was burned like this.
"The kitchen uses a gas hood, so there's no stove to cook on."
"You can wait until you've learned the truth before cooking. How dangerous is it if a fire starts like this?"
"If I hadn't just arrived, if something had happened, the consequences would have been disastrous."
"What's a gas hood?" Chen Zhigang looked puzzled. "We all cook on the stove at home."
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do that, and it's always the two of us who cook in the morning."
No wonder they didn’t know that gas masks were only available in big cities in those days.
I was used to getting up in the morning to make breakfast, but who knew something unexpected would happen.
Embarrassed, he pulled at the corner of his clothes and looked at Qin Zhenbei nervously, worried that he would be scolded and blamed.
"I'm going to wash my face, let's eat first!"
He didn't blame them because he would be sending them away soon anyway.
He did not feel any guilt towards Chen Gengsheng, simply because he was once his subordinate.
Besides, hitting people is wrong, but these two children are innocent.
After breakfast, the group got on the bus and set off.
The mess in the kitchen could only be left to Qin Ran to clean up.
The car headed towards the town. Qin Zhenbei had been to Chen Gengsheng's home before.
There is a small village nearby called Chenjia Village.
Chenjia Village is relatively backward. Once you enter the village, you will see low houses everywhere.
The road was also bumpy, and many people looked at the military vehicles with strange eyes.
A man on the roadside was smoking a cigarette and immediately turned and left when he saw the car passing by.
Jiang Manyue looked around through the car window, as if she was deliberately avoiding them.
"Zhenbei, why do I feel like the people here are all quite strange?"
Qin Zhenbei frowned and looked over: "Maybe it's because we rarely see outsiders here."
Soon, the car arrived at Chen Gengsheng's home.
Jiang Manyue got out of the car and looked at the dilapidated mud-brick house in front of her.
The tiles on top seemed to be broken, and the walls of the yard were also incomplete.
This was not the same as the countryside she had imagined: "Is this your home?"
"Yes!" The brother and sister got out of the car immediately.
He pushed open the yard door impatiently, seeming very anxious.
"Mom!" The cry was as if Liu Guifen was still alive.
Jiang Manyue and Qin Zhenbei looked at each other and walked inside.
There was no sign of human life in the house, and the air was filled with a cold and gloomy atmosphere.
"Mom!" Suddenly, Chen Zhigang cried, "Mom, where are you?"
After hearing the sound, the two of them went to the backyard and saw the brother and sister sitting on the ground crying.
"What's wrong?" Qin Zhenbei was confused: "Why are you crying?"
"Woo woo woo!" Xiaofang pointed to the empty space in front of the yard: "Mom, no, it's gone!"
What do you mean? Didn't Liu Guifen die a long time ago?
"Mom was here when we left, why is she gone?"
"We asked the village chief to buy a coffin, and I saw my mother lying in it with my own eyes."
"Mom, we agreed to bury you when we got back. Where have you been?"
Listening to the two children crying, I noticed traces on the ground.
It is obvious that there was a coffin placed in the rectangular sunken area.
"Wow, Mom, where have you been?" Chen Zhigang sobbed, looking around in panic and helplessness.
Jiang Manyue quickly pulled them aside to comfort them: "Don't worry, let's go look for it together!"
This time they came to bury Liu Guifen, so how could the coffin be lost in their own yard?
Moreover, the brother and sister were only away for two or three days, so the only possibility was that they were carried away.
After comforting the two children, they immediately went to ask the neighbors next door.
"Hello, Auntie!" Qin Zhenbei stepped forward and asked the old woman who came out of the house.
