"Hey! Why are you crying even harder?!"
Ye Sheng stood there helplessly: "No...it's just two sweet potatoes! If you don't like them, I...I'll go buy you something else! Please stop crying, okay?"
"Pfft—"
Shen Shuling was amused by his clumsy yet sincere appearance and burst into laughter through her tears.
She wiped away her tears, picked up a roasted sweet potato, peeled off its slightly hot skin, and took a big bite without any hesitation.
Fragrant, sweet, soft, and chewy!
It was the most delicious taste she could remember!
"Who said I don't like it!"
As she chewed, Shen Shuling mumbled, "Delicious! Especially delicious!"
She looked at Ye Sheng and handed him another sweet potato: "Here, this is for you."
Ye Sheng hesitated for a moment, but still took it.
Shen Shuling simply parked her bicycle by the roadside, plopped down on the grass, and patted the spot next to her: "Come on, sit down and eat with me."
Ye Sheng hesitated for a moment, but still sat down next to her.
The two sat side by side on the moonlit grass, each holding a roasted sweet potato, eating quietly.
The night was as dark as ink, dotted with countless stars.
A few barks came from afar, making the night seem even more peaceful and beautiful.
After finishing the last bite of sweet potato, Shen Shuling licked her lips contentedly.
She turned her head to look at the profile of the man beside her.
Under the moonlight, his features were clearly defined, with a high nose bridge and a smooth, resolute jawline.
Those peach blossom eyes, which always carried a hint of nonchalance, were now gazing at the distant starry sky, their usual playfulness replaced by a rare seriousness and tranquility.
Shen Shuling's heart skipped a beat once again, much to her dismay.
As if possessed, she gently rested her head on his strong shoulder.
Ye Sheng's body stiffened abruptly.
But this time, he neither spoke nor dodged away as he had before.
He just sat there stiffly, letting her lean against him, even his breathing became soft.
"Hey, Ye Sheng."
Shen Shuling's voice rang out in the quiet night.
"Um?"
Ye Sheng squeezed out a single syllable from his throat, trying to make his voice sound calm.
Why did you go out of your way to buy me roasted sweet potatoes?
"Who...who bought this especially for you?"
Ye Sheng's body tensed up instantly: "I just... I just happened to want to eat some myself! Yes! I was tempted by your craving look! I just bought one extra!"
Having said that, he was already prepared to be beaten again by Shen Shuling's "iron fist".
However, the expected punch did not land.
He only heard a soft laugh beside him, tinged with understanding and mischief.
"oh--"
Shen Shuling drawled out her words, her voice full of mockery: "So that's how it is."
She didn't ask any further questions, nor did she expose his clumsy lie.
She simply leaned against him quietly, the smile on her lips, which she couldn't suppress, brighter than the moon in the sky.
What a hypocrite!
Only a fool would believe he did it "on a whim"!
But... how come his stubborn, argumentative attitude is so... adorable?
Shen Shuling felt as if a large, soft, and sweet mass had been stuffed into her heart.
She looked up at the starry sky and sighed softly.
"Ye Sheng, I remember... didn't you say that if you fell in love with me, you would jump into the well in the yard?"
"!"
Ye Sheng's heart skipped a beat, as if someone had caught him red-handed, and he instantly bristled!
"I didn't! I didn't say that! Don't talk nonsense!"
He denied it three times in a row, his voice even changing tone.
Shen Shuling chuckled at his reaction, her shoulders swaying slightly.
"Okay, okay, you didn't say that, I remembered it wrong."
She drew out her words, her eyes sparkling with a smile like shattered starlight.
Then, Shen Shuling spoke softly: "Actually... I've said it before, I could never fall in love with a smooth-talking, irresponsible scoundrel like you in my entire life."
Ye Sheng's heart sank for no apparent reason.
However, Shen Shuling's next words instantly lifted his spirits from the depths of despair to the heights of elation.
"But now..."
Shen Shuling turned her head, her bright eyes fixed on him in the moonlight, a slow smile curving her lips.
"...It seems a little different."
Ye Sheng felt as if his heart had been gripped tightly by an invisible hand the moment he heard those words, and then suddenly released!
For the first time, those usually carefree and nonchalant peach blossom eyes showed obvious panic.
He almost instinctively asked, "Where...where is it different?"
Shen Shuling did not answer him immediately.
She simply rested her head comfortably back on his strong shoulder, clearly feeling the instant stiffness in his muscles and the rapid beating of his heart, as if it were about to burst out of his chest.
Shen Shuling's lips curled up, and the starlight in her eyes shone brighter than the night sky. Then, softly, with a hint of cunning that only the two of them could understand, she uttered two words.
"secret."
The air seemed to freeze.
All that remained was the rustling of the night wind through the grass and Ye Sheng's heart pounding like a drum.
Something seemed to be about to emerge, as if it would break through the soil at any moment, yet it was also as if there was still a thin veil between them, hazy and ambiguous.
In fact, Shen Shuling herself couldn't say exactly when this "difference" started.
Perhaps... it all started at that chaotic, dimly lit alleyway.
