Chapter 34 Green Uniform and Four Pockets

"May my houses be built all over the country."

With beautiful fantasies in her heart, Ruan Xianxian fell asleep and woke up to find the sun already setting.

After a quick wash, she went to a state-run restaurant and ordered a braised pork, a sweet and sour pork, a chicken stew with mushrooms, and two ounces of rice.

It cost four ounces of meat coupons and two ounces of grain coupons, totaling 1.6 yuan!

The state-run restaurant here was clean, spacious and bright. It was dinner time and the restaurant was packed. She carried the last dish to the table.

"Comrade! There's no room left, can we share a table?" A gentle male voice sounded from above.

Looking around, I saw a man in a green military uniform and a man in a Zhongshan suit with four pockets standing in front of the table.

The man who asked the polite question was wearing a four-pocket garment, framed glasses, and a Hero pen clipped to his breast pocket.

When Ruan Xianxian's gaze fell on the man in military uniform, she almost slammed the chicken stew with mushrooms in her hand onto his head.

She showed no surprise and said calmly, "Do as you please."

Then I sat down and diligently ate my rice.

"Big White," the refined man said, "I've found out what you asked me to investigate. The old lady was sent to a nearby farm because of her overseas connections."

The person was on the first batch of returnee lists, but for some unknown reason, the list of those returning home has not yet been released. The cause of death is not closely related to the old woman.

There was no obvious conflict between the two.

The deceased's residence has been placed under surveillance, and starting in the afternoon, three groups of people have been seen going in and out, moving things away.

Oh, by the way! That old lady has a granddaughter who was sent to the countryside as an educated youth in the brigade where you're staying.

puff--!

Could those two be talking about her grandmother? Lost in her thoughts, Ruan Xianxian coughed, a grain of rice stuck in her throat.

Feng Bai grunted expressionlessly, giving his friend a "shut up" look. The latter smiled and handed him a checkered handkerchief.

The voice was sarcastic: "Lady, eat slowly, we won't take it from you."

Ruan Xianxian pretended not to hear, picked up the bowl of chicken and mushroom soup and gulped down a mouthful, then looked up and replied with a smile, "No need! Thank you!"

The man was speechless. He put away his handkerchief and went to the window to ask for eight steamed buns and a plate of pickles.

As soon as the dishes were served, the two stopped talking, picked up the steamed buns and took bites. They ate politely but quickly. By the time Ruan Xianxian swallowed a bite of braised pork, the steamed bun opposite her was almost finished.

She looked at her own feast of fish and meat, then at the steamed buns and pickled vegetables across the street, her expression indescribable.

Throughout the ordeal, a subtle gaze kept glancing at her, making her heart flutter. Annoyed, she simply stopped eating and packed everything into a lunchbox to take away.

Qi Guofu glanced at the unhappy little girl, then at his best friend who kept glancing at her, his expression subtle. Before Ruan Xianxian left, he asked with a smile:

"What should I call you, ladies? Don't misunderstand, we're not bad people."

"Stop dreaming! I'm taking the food home to eat slowly."

Regardless of what she was saying, she picked up the net bag and left, as if afraid they would check her background based on her accent. The two men were left bewildered.

"Dabai! I didn't say anything, did I?" Qi Guofu was not very confident.

Feng Bai hummed in agreement, "He didn't say anything." Then, he changed the subject, "But the other party was clearly offended by you."

Qi Guofu was wronged to death. "You were the one who kept staring at that girl's face. What did I do?"

Feng Bai took a sip of water. "She appeared on the riverbank this morning, crawling out of your tent."

Qi Guofu: ? ? ?

Ruan Xianxian returned home and quickly forgot about meeting the two of them. She took various tickets and prepared to test the waters at the black market the next morning.

As a result... I got up early and followed three elderly women and two elderly men, and listened to them cursing and swearing that the black market wasn't open yet.

She guessed it was related to the flood. With the troops entering the county, which black market would dare to operate at this time?

Undeterred by not finding it on the black market, Ruan Xianxian, carrying two cans of malted milk powder, several glass jars, and a few kilograms of brown sugar, went to the county hospital with a bamboo basket.

She didn't need to shout; she just lifted a corner of the tarpaulin and walked around in crowded areas a couple of times, and soon some sharp-eyed older women noticed her.

"Ugly Girl, Ugly Girl! Why are you still walking? Don't you even recognize your great-aunt?" An older woman with a blue scarf tied around her head quickly grabbed her.

Ugly Girl, is that her?

Ruan Xianxian was confused for a moment, then quickly grabbed the old lady's arm, "Grandma Tiger, you're here! I've been looking for you for ages."

The two looked at each other, revealing the same look of disdain.

The old lady thought she was extremely ugly!

She thought the old lady had a really sharp tongue!

The two walked hand in hand to a large banyan tree by the side. The old woman let go of his hand and asked with a slanted eye, "What? Do you have any baby formula?"

Ruan Xianxian could have some, but recalling that the county supply and marketing cooperative didn't even have milk powder, she honestly replied, "No! They only have canned malted milk powder, grain coupons, meat coupons, and stuff like that."

Malted milk powder and canned food are both good things, but she advised, "Pregnant women shouldn't eat canned food, it's too cold."

"What?" The old woman looked completely bewildered. Finally, she realized that she wanted the milk powder and canned food herself. "My daughter-in-law told me that drinking more milk is good for the bones of older people."

My lower back has been hurting a lot lately, so I'm thinking of getting some milk powder to drink.

It turned out to be a misunderstanding. In the end, the old lady took everything from her basket. Since she didn't have that much money, she went around to different hospitals to ask for money.

After scraping together the money, I asked her, "Do you still have canned food? Can I get a discount if I buy more?"

Ruan Xianxian realized that the old woman wanted to be a middleman, so she told her to wait while she went to the Xinhua Bookstore to read for half an hour. When she came back, she handed the old woman a basket of canned fruit.

At a time when pork costs a little over 50 cents a pound, canned fruit sells for 70-80 cents at the supply and marketing cooperative, and even more expensive if you don't need a ration coupon. She asked for 1.5 yuan, but the old woman spat at her and bargained down to 1.1 yuan.
