Chapter 16 Being Followed on the Black Market

It was just past six or seven o'clock when the sun was about to set. Bathed in the afterglow, Jiang Xile went to a state-run restaurant and ate a bowl of shredded pork noodles. After wandering around outside for a while, she decided to go back.

Unexpectedly, they ended up at the entrance of a scrap metal recycling station, which was a great place for time travelers to find treasures at that time.

Jiang Xile was naturally very interested and wanted to go in and find out what was going on, but unfortunately, when she got closer, she saw a large, shiny padlock.

Well, they've gone home from get off work!

Dejected, Jiang Xile decided she must come back tomorrow. Whether she finds anything or not is not important; what matters is the sense of participation!

When she returned to the Jiang family home, the lights in the main room were already off. As she entered her room, Jiang Xile frowned.

The room showed signs of having been ransacked, but it was unclear whether it was Zhang Guilian or Jiang Wanmin who had done it.

It seems these two are still up to no good. Since they made the first move, she doesn't need to be polite anymore.

Thinking about leaving here the day after tomorrow morning, Jiang Xile secretly started making plans.

With a loud bang, she slammed her bedroom door shut, startling Zhang Guilian, who was peeping from the next room.

He clearly looked like he'd done something wrong!

Jiang Wanmin had already started snoring in bed. Recently, in order to be promoted to team leader, Jiang Wanmin had been working hard every day. He was exhausted at the end of the day, but he was still happy to do so.

In the middle of the night, Jiang Xile quietly opened the door, and Jiang Wanmin's snoring was particularly clear in the quiet courtyard.

Jiang Xile left the Jiang family's courtyard without anyone noticing and headed straight for the black market. After passing through two streets and three alleys, she finally caught a glimpse of a figure.

Today, Jiang Xile disguised himself as a boy, wearing Jiang Shengli's clothes and a tattered hat. He didn't look hunched over, and he wasn't very tall either.

At the entrance, two burly men stood guard, demanding a one-cent entrance fee from both buyers and sellers. They called it protection money, but it was really just for keeping watch.

Once someone comes to conduct a surprise inspection, a few whistles will send the people in the black market scattering in all directions.

However, these days, everyone is struggling and resources are scarce, so as long as there are no serious security problems, the authorities turn a blind eye to the existence of the black market.

Jiang Xile walked to the door and, without waiting for the doorman to ask any questions, quickly took out a dime and handed it over. She only had a shoulder bag on her back, so it was clear that she wasn't there to sell goods.

The gatekeeper took the money and stopped paying attention to Jiang Xile, since everyone who came to the black market was covered up very well.

Walking into the alley, there were quite a few people coming and going, some selling eggs, some selling wild animals, some selling cloth, and some selling grain.

Jiang Xile went around in circles and managed to get a general understanding of the current black market situation.

Jiang Xile had no intention of selling the supplies in her spatial storage, since many of the items were outdated and she didn't want to lose more than she gained.

The main purpose of this trip is to exchange tickets and buy fabric. Of course, it would be even better if we could buy cotton.

But if you can't buy it, that's okay, you can wait until you're in Northeast China.

If all else fails, you can take apart the quilts and other blankets in the space. The outer layer is unusable, but the core is still usable.

After going around in circles, Jiang Xile finally arrived at the ticket scalper and exchanged 100 jin of national grain coupons.

There's been another wave of people going to the countryside lately, so the price of grain coupons across the country has increased by two cents. But this small amount of money is nothing to Jiang Xile.

If the scalper hadn't only had 100 jin of national grain coupons left, she might have exchanged even more.

After all, in this day and age, you can't get anything done just by having money without tickets!

The national grain coupons were especially popular because they contained oil!

You should know that workers are currently on a ration of only four ounces of soybean oil per month, and they can't buy more even if they want to.

After buying the grain coupons, Jiang Xile went to buy fabric. Today, the black market was selling substandard fabric, some of which was faded in certain places, but it didn't affect its use.

These days, being able to buy this kind of fabric is a stroke of luck. Jiang Xile arrived quite late; the stalls were already almost closing up shop.

Rarely seen, there were three colors in total. Jiang Xile bought thirty feet of each. Carrying a stack of fabric, Jiang Xile undoubtedly became a striking sight on the black market.

In the corner, a shifty-eyed man set his sights on Jiang Xile.

Having experienced the apocalypse, Jiang Xile was still quite alert. Noticing the footsteps following behind, she could only click her tongue helplessly before continuing her shopping spree.

Faced with absolute power, all schemes and tricks are nothing but paper tigers.

Jiang Xile bought all the eggs on the black market today, and then bought two boxes of premium biscuits.

This thing looks like it came from a foreign exchange store; the metal box looks much more upscale than the paper packaging from the supply and marketing cooperative.

Carrying large and small bags, Jiang Xile left the black market. Along the way, she walked and stopped, but the sound of footsteps behind her never stopped.

After passing through an alley, Jiang Xile quickly walked in, and in the blink of an eye, she hid in the shadows around the corner.

The man following behind hurried up.

"Damn it, where is he?! We've lost him?"

The man looked around but didn't see a single person. He then wondered if he had been discovered and that's why the person had escaped.

"Damn it, I followed them this far, and they still got away!"

Jiang Xile threw the things into her spatial storage and then walked out from the corner.
