Chapter 29 Warehouse

Pushing open the door to the girls' dormitory, Jiang Xile finally saw what Guo Dongxu meant by "a bit crowded."

"Comrade Guo, this isn't just a little crowded! There's not enough room for three people!"

Guo Dongxu scratched his head and said somewhat helplessly:

"I have no choice. Our educated youth settlement is only so big. The west side is a storage room now, and there's no heated brick bed yet, so it's not suitable for living. So you'll just have to make do with squeezing in."

Looking at the two-meter-wide space on the kang (a heated brick bed), there wasn't enough room for three people to sleep, and the bedding couldn't even be arranged properly.

Jiang Xile glanced into the courtyard and saw a small door on the west side. An idea struck her, and she asked:

"Comrade Guo, there's no heated brick bed on the west side. Are you referring to that big room?"

Yes, that's right.

"What about that little house? Is it habitable?"

"that?"

"yes!"

Li Xiaojuan and Zhou Caixia also looked in the direction Guo Dongxu was pointing, and saw only a low, crooked little house, about half a foot shorter than a normal house.

"That's just a small storage room, usually used to store odds and ends. How could anyone live there! Besides, the room doesn't get much natural light!"

Upon hearing this, Zhou Caixia and Li Xiaojuan immediately looked away, not even glancing at that spot.

But Jiang Xile thought it was a good place. Although it was a storage room, it could be easily tidied up. Besides, it wasn't very big, which was just right for her to live alone!

"Comrade Guo, may I go in and take a look?"

Guo Dongxu was taken aback for a moment before realizing what Jiang Xile meant, and then said in a very kind tone:

"It looks fine, but don't think you should move in. It's not like no one has ever tried to take a look at this house before."

There's nothing inside, and cleaning it up would be a hassle, not to mention I'd have to pay for it myself, so it's just been empty.

"I'll take a look first before deciding. Anyway, this house can't fit three people!"

Seeing that Jiang Xile insisted, Guo Dongxu didn't say anything more. Anyway, it wouldn't take much effort to take a look.

"Then come with me!"

"Okay, thank you very much, Comrade Guo!"

"You're welcome, it's what I should do!"

Opening the small door of the warehouse, you are greeted by a face covered in dust.

"Ahem... I'm sorry! The things in here haven't been used for a long time, and they've accumulated a lot of dust!"

"It's alright, this is normal, besides, it's always dusty in the countryside!"

Guo Dongxu nodded, opened the door, and also opened the window.

"Come in, you're welcome to look around!"

The room was filled with scraps and leftovers from the construction of the educated youth settlement, as well as items that the older educated youth no longer used. Many of these items were no longer needed but were too precious to throw away, so they were placed here.

After looking around, Jiang Xile noticed that although the room was small, only a dozen square meters, it had a chimney, so all that was needed was to build a kang (a heated brick bed).

As for the walls, I'll have to buy some whitewash and paint them myself, or stick some newspaper on them, otherwise, over time, it will keep falling dirt and debris, which won't be good.

"This little house is actually quite nice, Comrade Guo. May I stay here if I wish?"

I can pay for cleaning the house myself, but afterwards, I'll have full control over the room unless I move out of the educated youth settlement!

"I'm fine with it, but I need to let the captain know first. But are you really sure you want to stay here?"

"Of course, otherwise we can't just squeeze onto the kang with them, can we? Everyone has to work every day, and we can't afford to not get enough sleep!"

"Alright then! I'll take you to the brigade leader right away. His second brother, Li, is a master at building kang beds and stoves."

As for the firewood for heating the kang (a heated brick bed), you can use the kind provided by the educated youth first, and then replenish what you need later. If you work quickly, it should be done in two or three days!

"What about these two or three days...?"

"If you don't mind, you can make do at the long table in the kitchen for the next couple of days. It's summer, so you won't get cold."

"The long table in the kitchen?"

"Yes, the kitchen table is long and wide, there's definitely no problem for you to sleep alone."

"Alright then, it's settled then. Let's go find the captain!"

"Okay! I'll tell them to wait for me at the door!"

"Um!"

As they walked out of the warehouse, they saw Zhou Caixia and Li Xiaojuan still standing at the entrance of the girls' dormitory.

"You two still don't know how to address each other?"

"I am Zhou Caixia!"

"I am Li Xiaojuan!"

"So it's Comrade Zhou and Comrade Li. Comrade Jiang is planning to stay in the storeroom, so if you two have no objections, you can start making your beds."

As Guo Dongxu spoke, he pointed to an empty spot not far away.

Although the two were somewhat surprised to hear this, they did not intend to interfere. It would be more comfortable to have one less person living there, and they were happy to accept it.

"Alright, then we'll pack our things. Thank you for your help, Comrade Guo!"

"You're welcome. You can pack up now. I need to report to the captain about Comrade Jiang. I'll be going now."

If you have any questions, you can ask the others when they come back after dinner!

"We understand, thank you, Comrade Guo!"

"You're welcome!"

After explaining things to Zhou Caixia and Li Xiaojuan, Guo Dongxu took Jiang Xile to the brigade leader's house.

It's lunchtime now, and many people are taking a nap at home. Of course, some are just sitting under the big locust tree at the village entrance, gossiping.

Liu Dahua was a notorious gossip in the progressive brigade, and sitting with her, chatting, was Widow Xu, whose husband had died two years ago.
