Chapter 438 No News

Su Aidang covered his face with his hands, tears streaming from between his fingers. He couldn't say a word, and his heart was filled with endless regret. His son wanted to join the army, and he wanted to help his son, but he didn't expect this day to come.

Su Ai Dang was bewildered by the war. They were living peacefully, weren't they? Why did they have to fight?

"Second son's wife, if you want to blame someone, blame me." Su Dalin spoke slowly, his voice old, "I told Congwen not to bring shame to our Su family and to perform well in the army. He listened to me."

Zhang Xinlan whimpered in pain, tears streaming down her face. Who could she blame? Who could she blame now? As long as Congwen was safe and sound, she would do anything.

The whole family was silent, and a depressing atmosphere spread.

"I'll go cook." After an unknown amount of time, Li Xiu Lian propped herself up and stood up.

"I don't want to eat." Zhang Xinlan said and went back to the room, and Su Aidang followed her in.

Qin Ying said, "I can't eat it either."

Wu Guixiang said with all her might, "Forget it, don't bother. Just make it when you want to eat."

"Um."

No one had an appetite, and the family tossed and turned that night, unable to fall asleep.

The next day, Zhang Xinlan moved a chair and sat at the door of her house, waiting for the postman to deliver the telegram. It was so cold, and everyone advised her to go inside and wait, but she didn't say anything, just sat there stubbornly. No matter who tried to persuade her, it was useless. She was like a snowman piled up in winter, motionless, staring into the distance.

But she waited from dawn to dusk, sitting there all day, but got nothing.

The same thing happened on the third day. From morning till night, she waited for nothing. The family became more and more upset. The longer they waited for Congwen's reply telegram, the more likely it was that he had left with the troops.

Zhang Xinlan's vitality quickly faded. She sat there with lifeless eyes, looking like she had aged ten years. It was heartbreaking to see her.

Su Congjun and Su Congwu were in the city and were more informed, so they naturally heard more news about the war. They almost subconsciously thought of Congwen who was serving in the army and hurried back home.

"Mom." Su Congwu looked at the lifeless Zhang Xinlan, his heart aching. "Don't be like this, I'll be fine. Don't let your body collapse before I come back."

He held a bowl of hand-rolled noodles in his hand and said, "Mom, would you like to eat something?"

Zhang Xinlan didn't say anything. She sat on the bed, looking somewhere in the void, not knowing what she was thinking.

Su Congwu tried his best to talk to her, but got no answer from her. He just gave her a look and could only retreat silently.

"The second son's wife can't go on like this." Wu Guixiang's frown never relaxed. "Don't wait until there's no news from Congwen, she'll be unable to bear it herself."

"The main thing is that she won't listen to anyone right now," Li Xiulian said. "I think Xinlan will go crazy if she doesn't know about Congwen's news."

"That's right." Qin Ying also said.

They both understood the mother's feelings and put themselves in her shoes. If they were to join the army or be in such a situation, they would also go crazy.

"We can't get in touch with him either." Su Aimin frowned and thought carefully. "The school hasn't replied, and we don't know his unit number. If Congwen is really on the front line, we won't be able to get in touch with him. It would be great if we could find someone to find out."

But he was just talking, who could they ask?

Su Qingyun's eyes lit up and he looked thoughtful.

In the afternoon, without her family noticing, Su Qingyun went out alone. She walked to a secluded part of the village, stopped, looked around to make sure there was no one around, and then said, "Excuse me, could the person who's following me come out for a moment?"

No one spoke, only the sound of the wind blowing.

Su Qingyun paused, raised his voice, and repeated it again.

She looked around and saw no one. Just as Su Qingyun frowned and felt frustrated, a figure quietly landed behind her.

"Miss Su." The person who spoke had a steady and powerful voice.

Su Qingyun turned her head suddenly, with some surprise in her eyes. It was indeed the man who appeared at the market last time! He had been following her all the time!
