When the postman who delivered letters and parcels arrived, the Su family was having lunch. They had cooked sweet potato porridge, which was neither dry nor watery. It filled their stomachs, and they ate it with some appetizing spicy and sour side dishes, and they ate it with slurps.
The family was still discussing the meeting with the Wen family when they heard someone shouting outside.
"Are Su Aidang and Zhang Xinlan here? There's a letter for you!"
Zhang Xinlan was holding the bowl, stunned. "Is someone calling me from outside? Ai Dang, I think they called your name too?"
"Did he call?" Su Aidang wondered.
Su Qingyun excitedly put the bowl on the table, "Second uncle, second aunt, there's a letter for you! It must be from my second brother!"
"Oh my god!" Zhang Xinlan reacted in two seconds and ran out, almost dropping the bowl to the ground.
The postman, carrying a military green bag on his bicycle, asked, "Is this Zhang Xinlan?"
"Yes, yes, it's me." Zhang Xinlan's eyes were full of anticipation. Behind her, other family members also came out.
The postman took out a letter from his bag and said, "This is from the Chuncheng Military Region. This package is also for you."
There was a package of medium size at his feet.
"Thank you, thank you!" Zhang Xinlan was overjoyed.
After the postman left, the family hurried into the house. Wu Guixiang hurriedly called out, "Hurry up, Yunyun, read what your second brother wrote in the letter."
Zhang Xinlan handed the letter to Su Qingyun, "Here, Yunyun." She now regretted not taking the literacy campaign seriously.
Su Qingyun looked at the postmark of Chuncheng Military Region on the envelope. It seemed that his second brother was assigned there. The climate in Chuncheng was very good, with spring all year round. His second brother was lucky, and Su Qingyun breathed a sigh of relief.
She carefully tore open the envelope, unfolded the letter, and began to read.
"Grandpa and grandma, dad and mom, uncle and aunt, younger uncle and aunt, elder brother, Congwu, and so on, Zhan Xinjia..." Wow, these titles take up a whole row. There's nothing we can do about it, there are so many people in the family.
"I've settled down in the Chuncheng Military Region now. The climate in Chuncheng is great. Even at this time of year, we only wear thin clothes and don't feel cold. The air is also humid, not as dry as it is back home. I've been assigned to the recruit company. My comrades come from all over the country, but they're all very nice and take good care of me. The food in the cafeteria is also very good, and I eat a full meal every time. Anyway, everything is fine here."
"I will do my best in the army. Don't worry about me at home. I will continue to write to you when I have time. I look forward to hearing from you. By the way, I sent you some specialties from Spring City. Please try them. If you like them, I will send more to you next time." - Su Congwen.
After Su Qingyun finished reading, he closed the letter.
"That's all?" After hearing it, everyone was still not satisfied.
Zhang Xinlan turned the letter over and over, frowning and saying, "This kid, he finally got a letter, but he only wrote this much. Isn't this a waste of money to send it?"
Su Congwu couldn't help but ask, "Mom, my second brother is in the army now. Why would it cost money to send a letter?"
"Really?" Zhang Xinlan was stunned for a moment, then said confidently, "If he doesn't want money, he should send more back!"
Su Qingyun is so impressed by her second aunt that she is afraid that she is not taking advantage of the country. She is really something!
Su Dalin glanced at her and said, "Second son's wife, you are now the mother of a soldier. You must be aware of this and not just take advantage of the army's care. If everyone does this, how can the country function?"
Su Dalin rarely speaks, but when he does, it's always in a serious tone.
"Yes, Dad, I said the wrong thing. I will be more careful next time." Zhang Xinlan said angrily, not daring to talk back.
Su Aidang touched his chin but was thinking about another thing. He asked the most educated person in the family, "Congwu, how far is Chuncheng from here?" The farthest place he had ever been to in his life was the county town, and all he knew about Chuncheng was just the name.
"Well..." Su Congwu scratched his head, recalling the map of China he had seen, and said uncertainly, "It must be over a thousand kilometers, right?"
"Two thousand five hundred and eighty kilometers." Su Qingyun said suddenly. Seeing everyone looking at her, she explained, "I saw it in a book."
"One kilometer equals two miles, so two thousand kilometers is five thousand miles. It's so far!" Su Aidang gasped. "It will take several days to travel by train, right?"
Zhang Xinlan was anxious, "How long will it take for Congwen to come back?"
"Why think about all this? Second brother will come back naturally if he wants to. Let me see what good things he sent back." Su Congwu interrupted the slightly depressing atmosphere and couldn't wait to open the package. He raised his hand and shook it, "Wow, it's quite heavy."
He opened the package and the first thing he saw was a beautifully packaged box. "Flower Cake." Su Congwu read out the words on the box.
Wu Guixiang: "Flowers can be used to make cakes? That's really strange."
Qin Ying took a closer look and said, "This should be a flower cake filled with edible roses. It's a specialty of Spring City. I've eaten it before."
This was more than ten years ago, and Qin Ying's tone was a little melancholy.
Su Aimin, who was standing by, squeezed her hand to comfort her.
"Let's try it together later."
"What is this?" Su Congwu picked up something, a leg-shaped object wrapped in oil paper.
He tore open the oil paper, and a huge pig's leg appeared in front of everyone, and everyone was stunned.
"This is... a pork leg?" Wu Guixiang asked, "But why does it look so dry?"
"It's still red. Isn't it cooked?" Su Aidang poked the leg. "Spring City is so far from here, and this raw meat is still not spoiled?"
