Chapter 526: Enemy Bombing

Dense sounds of gunfire, artillery fire, and screams intertwined together. Su Congwen bent over in the trench, his hand holding the gun without shaking at all. His determined eyes only saw the enemy opposite him and nothing else.

"Damn, these bastards." Brother Zhang cursed beside him, "There's no stopping them."

They have been guarding this bridge for almost three days. The enemy has launched more than a dozen attacks, large and small. The other side is trying every means to destroy the bridge, and they must keep the bridge at all costs.

"Xiao Su, be careful." While dealing with the enemy, Brother Zhang did not forget to care about Su Congwen.

He was extremely nervous and the wound on his abdomen was bleeding again, but he didn't even frown, as if he didn't feel any pain.

"I know." Su Congwen said concisely.

"Company commander, the enemy's firepower has become stronger, and we can't hold on any longer." In another trench, the deputy company commander reported loudly to the company commander.

There are only more than 30 people left in their company's combat effectiveness, and the rest of the survivors are all wounded. Guns and ammunition are in short supply, and the enemy's firepower is getting more and more fierce. If this continues, they will not be able to hold on.

"We have to hold on even if we can't," the company commander gritted his teeth. "We have to complete the mission assigned by the higher-ups, no matter the cost."

"I've received a telegram from our superiors. Our reinforcements will arrive tomorrow morning at the latest. Pass the order down. Everyone, hold on! In this final moment, no one is allowed to slack off!"

"Even if we have to fight with bayonets or bare hands, we must protect this bridge!"

"Also, tell Old Wu to be extremely careful with the enemy's artillery. We must not allow them to find an opportunity to blow up the bridge. As soon as we find their artillery, use the bazooka to bomb them!"

"clear!"

The deputy company commander turned around and left in a hurry to convey the company commander's orders.

After he left, the company commander's resolute face was furrowed between his brows, forming a "川" shape.

He sighed softly. No matter what, he had to hold on. There must not be any mistakes!

The battle lasted for more than an hour before the gunfire gradually died down, but no one let down their guard because they knew that the enemy was nearby and could attack again at any time.

"Xiao Su, are you okay?"

Brother Zhang asked Shen Congwen.

"It's okay." Su Congwen's voice was steady, with a hint of fatigue.

"That's good." Brother Zhang breathed a sigh of relief. "Take a break. Maybe they'll call again later."

"Um."

The two men leaned against the trench to rest, their brows filled with deep fatigue. Su Congwen looked at his slightly trembling hands, and after a few seconds, he held his hands down expressionlessly.

The sun gradually sets, and the evening light shines down through the gaps between the leaves, leaving a spot of light.

All the members of the company were crawling in the mountains and forests, like swift and agile leopards, with their eyes open and muscles tensed. The scouts hid on the branches, turning in a different direction from time to time, holding binoculars to keep an eye on the movements around them.

Within the circular field of vision, a flying bird suddenly appeared, coming from far away.

The investigator frowned, and suddenly his pupils dilated. No, that's not a bird, that's a plane!

"There are enemy planes, bombers are coming!"

"There are enemy planes, bombers are coming!"

"There are enemy planes, bombers are coming!"

He couldn't care about anything else and could only yell at the top of his lungs, "Hide quickly, lie down quickly! Quick!"

"Find cover, get down!"

When the soldiers heard the sound, they moved quickly and looked for cover. The roar of the bombers was getting closer and closer.

Seen from the air, the people on the ground were like ants hiding in the woods, but the pilot on the plane quickly locked onto their position. He looked at them coldly, suddenly showing an evil smile, and activated the control button. Bombs fell quickly, crashing to the ground and exploding instantly. Trees broke, the earth shook, and dust flew.

Screams, blood, body parts...

In an instant, extremely shocking scenes filled Su Congwen's vision. His eyes were red as he looked at his comrades who were injured in the explosion and cried out in pain.

“Save…save me…”

Just five meters away from him, a young soldier fell down, his legs covered in blood. He lay on the ground, unable to move at all. His face was distorted with pain. He stretched out his hands towards Su Congwen with a pleading look on his face.

Su Congwen clenched his fists and his teeth chattered. This was the youngest soldier in their company, only nineteen years old.

"Cong...Brother Congwen, save me, I...I don't want to die." He spat out large mouthfuls of blood, his eyes had begun to blur, but he was still calling for help.

"Bang!" Another bomb exploded beside him. The young soldier lost his voice and lay on the ground, his life or death unknown.

Su Congwen looked at the distance between them, gritted his teeth, and climbed out of the trench under the artillery fire.

"Xiao Su!" Big Brother Zhang, who was lying nearby, screamed, "Don't go!"

Su Congwen no longer cared about anything else. He bent his body and ran over quickly.

"Axing! Axing!" Su Congwen called out to the young soldier lying on the ground, "Don't sleep, don't sleep!"

He touched Ah Xing's nostrils and found that he was not breathing.

Su Congwen's heart trembled, he closed his eyes and then opened them again. He dragged Ah Xing to the trench on the side, leaving a long trail of blood.

"Damn Chinese people, go to hell! Hahahaha!"

After the ferocious laughter, more bombs fell, and the sound of explosions one after another resounded throughout the mountain.

Su Congwen was dragging Ah Xing with some difficulty. He looked at the trench not far away and gritted his teeth even tighter. There was a whistling sound in his ears. He looked up and saw a bomb falling straight down.

"Xiao Su!"

Brother Zhang's voice and the explosion sounded at the same time.

Su Congwen only felt that he was overwhelmed by a huge force, his eyes went black, and he lost consciousness.

It was unknown how long it had been, perhaps a long time, or perhaps just a moment, before Su Congwen woke up. However, he could not open his eyes. Dust from the explosion flew into his eyes, and he could only shout in panic, "Brother Zhang, are you okay?"

No answer.

"Brother Zhang?"

"I... I'm fine." Brother Zhang's voice was barely audible.

Su Congwen's heart trembled violently. He rubbed his eyes vigorously and opened them with difficulty. The scene in front of him stimulated every nerve in his body.

Brother Zhang lay on the ground, his back covered in blood and flesh, his bones practically visible. Blood flowed from his abdomen, soaking into the soil, staining the gray dust reddish-brown. He stared at Su Congwen, "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, I'm fine." Su Congwen spoke incoherently, "Brother Zhang, stop talking! I'll find someone to save you, I'll find someone..."

"Xiao Su!" Brother Zhang grabbed his hand, causing blood to gushed out crazily. He coughed painfully twice, "Don't... don't move. I have something to tell you."

"Okay, okay, I won't move. You talk, I'm listening, I'm listening to everything."

Su Congwen nodded frantically, tears streaming down his face. He trembled with his hands and didn't dare to touch him.
