"Thank you." Chen Xiaoyu curled her lips and whispered her thanks amid the mischievous smiles of the Su family.
The white noodles were obviously made of fine flour, paired with green vegetables and golden fried eggs. It looked simple yet delicious. Chen Xiaoyu felt a sweet taste in her heart. She took a small bite of the noodles and found it was as delicious as she expected.
The Su family saw her eating happily, exchanged glances, and then looked at Su Congwen together.
The girl came to me for no reason during the New Year. We need to give them an explanation, right?
Su Congwen felt the oppressive gaze of his whole family, and he sighed imperceptibly. His eyes were full of helplessness when he looked at Chen Xiaoyu.
He really didn't expect that she would come from so far away.
Seeing that Chen Xiaoyu had finished her noodles, Su Congwen said, "Chen Xiaoyu, come out with me for a moment."
Su Congwen's tone was somewhat serious and formal.
Chen Xiaoyu panicked for a second.
"Congwen, how can you speak to Xiaoyu like that?" Zhang Xinlan glared at her son. It was unacceptable to speak to a little girl like that. "Take Xiaoyu for a walk, have a good chat, and come back for lunch later."
"Um."
Chen Xiaoyu followed Su Congwen out the door.
The whole family stretched their necks to watch the two people leave the door, and immediately started a heated discussion.
"What's going on? Second Aunt, didn't you say that Congwen has never had any girls around him?" Qin Ying asked curiously.
"How should I know? Didn't I just find out about Xiaoyu?" Zhang Xinlan gritted her teeth. "This brat, really, always keeps quiet about his big things. He never says anything even when asked. If the girl hadn't come to us, we wouldn't know anything."
"It doesn't look to me like Congwen and that girl are dating." Su Aimin was a little confused. "But the girl seems to be very enthusiastic towards Congwen. Could it be that the girl is chasing after Congwen?"
"That's not impossible." Zhang Xinlan said this with a bit of pride, "We have so many excellent students, so isn't it normal for a girl to like him?"
"These are not the main points." Wu Guixiang frowned and said, "Xiaoyu came to our house during Chinese New Year. It's such a long journey, and she spent the New Year on the train. Her family must be so worried and distressed. I'm afraid she ran away without telling her parents."
"That's not possible?" After Wu Guixiang said this, Zhang Xinlan's happy mood faded a bit.
Su Aimin curled her lips and said, "Anyway, our family is Yunyun. If she had dared to go to a boy's house on New Year's Eve without telling me and her mother, I would have been pissed to death."
"Indeed." Xia Qiu nodded in agreement, "If I dare to do that, my parents will break my legs."
The family looked at each other and realized that something seemed a little wrong.
"No, I have to go ask." Zhang Xinlan couldn't sit still. She really wanted her son to find a partner, but she didn't want to find one in this way. If the other person's parents came to her house, she wouldn't know what to say.
"Sit down!"
Wu Guixiang grabbed her and said, "What are you doing now? The two young people are chatting. Let's talk later."
"All right."
Zhang Xinlan had no choice but to sit down again.
Xia Qiu was cracking melon seeds, her intuition telling her that something was not simple between Brother Wen and that girl Xiaoyu.
Over there, Su Congwen and Chen Xiaoyu walked outside for a while and then stopped. Not many people would pass by here, so it was a good place to talk.
"Tell me, why are you here?" Su Congwen looked at Chen Xiaoyu who lowered her head and asked, "Does your family know?"
"I know." Chen Xiaoyu nodded vigorously. "They know I came to see you. I almost wore out my lips trying to convince them."
"Why are you looking for me instead of staying at home to celebrate the New Year?"
"I miss you." Chen Xiaoyu pursed her lips and said directly.
Su Congwen's face flashed with an unnatural expression at such straightforward and undisguised words, and then he quickly said in a cold tone: "I said last time that it's impossible between us. You are very good, and you can find many men who are better than me. Let's... forget it."
"Why should we let it go? Why should we let it go?" Chen Xiaoyu suddenly raised her head and looked at him stubbornly, "Su Congwen, you can't let things go between two people just like that."
Chen Xiaoyu is not a shameless person. If Su Congwen really has no feelings for her, she would not have come all the way here just to seek an answer.
"From the first time we met on the battlefield of Yue State to meeting you again in Chuncheng, I am very sure that there is fate between us. I just like you. I don't want to regret it, and I don't want to make you regret it either." Chen Xiaoyu looked at Su Congwen with a stubborn tone, and the tears in her eyes were crystal clear and moving, about to fall.
Su Congwen was silent.
He recalled every little detail of his time with Chen Xiaoyu.
After their hasty farewell on the battlefield that year, Su Congwen never thought that he would meet her again.
It was last March, the season of spring flowers blooming. He left school for a rare occasion to submit a document to the army. On the bus back to school, someone suddenly patted him on the shoulder.
He turned around and saw Chen Xiaoyu's smiling face. Both of them were a little surprised.
"You are actually in Chuncheng?" Chen Xiaoyu asked him.
During the days when Chen Xiaoyu took care of him, the two chatted about some things. She only knew that Su Congwen was from the army in Chuncheng, but she didn't expect that Chuncheng was so big that they could meet each other.
"Yeah." Su Congwen nodded. "When did you come back?"
"I came back in January. The unit I was with completed its mission, and my mission as an army nurse was also completed, so I came back."
"So that's how it is." Su Congwen didn't forget to ask, "You're not hurt, are you?"
"No, our medics are all in the rear and are not injured."
"That's good."
After saying a few words, there was some awkwardness between the two of them.
As they looked at each other, Chen Xiaoyu seemed to recall something and said, "Oh, you forgot to take something with you. It's a small notebook. They found it when they were cleaning up the battlefield. I never knew who it belonged to. Later, I flipped through it and found out it was yours. I've been keeping it for you. Do you still want it?"
Su Congwen was stunned for a moment, then realized that it was the notebook he used to take notes. He had thought it was lost in the artillery fire, but he didn't expect it was still there.
"Yes, let's make an appointment when it's convenient for you and I'll come get it." Su Congwen said.
"Okay." Chen Xiaoyu nodded readily.
The two of them agreed on a time and place, and Su Congwen took back his things. They met twice more later, and after a few visits, they became familiar with each other.
