Lu Feng quickly washed up before leaving the house. Zhang Fengxia complained incessantly the whole way. When they arrived at the Yellow River, Zhang Fengxia became as excited as a child, hanging the camera around her neck and constantly adjusting the lens.
"Come on, smile! I bought a lot of film today." Zhang Fengxia said, turning around and snapping a picture.
Lu Feng stood there again, not in the mood to take pictures, his gaze unconsciously drifting towards that spot.
He's still here...
He was still clinging to the fence, just like before. Many people around were watching and seemed to want to go over and persuade him, but they hesitated and no one went over.
"Take a picture for me!" Zhang Fengxia shoved the camera into Lu Feng's hand and said to herself, "I'll strike a pose, you just press this button."
Lu Feng picked up his camera and sighed. Perhaps he didn't want to die, but there were some things he couldn't understand. He took a few photos of Zhang Fengxia.
It has to be said that once the girls start taking pictures, they can't stop. A roll of film is quickly used up. Lu Feng took pictures of all the surrounding rocks, trees, stone tablets, and the Yellow River.
An old man was sitting on the steps nearby, smoking. He seemed to be in charge of the sanitation here. He would occasionally shout that people shouldn't throw cigarette butts on the ground. It was almost noon, and some tourists started to walk back.
The sun was quite scorching, and some girls wearing down jackets unzipped their jackets because of the heat. The man was still there, standing like a statue, the only change being that he kept smoking one cigarette after another.
The old man noticed Lu Feng looking in that direction and said, "Don't look anymore. He's been here for four days. I heard he went bankrupt. Maybe he'll be free when he disappears."
"You've talked to him?" Lu Feng asked in surprise.
"I asked a couple of questions."
"Why don't you try to persuade him?"
“Countless people stand on the banks of the Yellow River every year. If they had any chance of survival, who would want to stand there? I tried to persuade them at first, but they all carried despair in their hearts. They were people who had driven their lives into a dead end. Let them be.” The old man sighed, lit a cigarette, and looked quite weathered.
Zhang Fengxia could tell that Lu Feng had been glancing in that direction every now and then all morning, so she said, "You'd better mind your own business. If you go bankrupt one day, you'll be one of them."
Just as Lu Feng was about to speak, he suddenly saw the other person stand up straight and lift his leg to step over the fence.
"Hello!!!"
Lu Feng shouted and rushed over. Everyone present was attracted by the sudden shout and looked up. Even the man turned his head to look.
"Don't jump!" Lu Feng shouted and rushed over to pull him back.
He didn't resist or struggle. Lu Feng pulled him, and he slumped weakly to the ground, his face showing signs of exhaustion. He looked like he hadn't washed his face for several days, with a scruffy beard.
"I just finished my last cigarette; it was my last possession." He stared blankly at Lu Feng, his voice trembling, and said, "Thank you!"
"I heard you went bankrupt?" Lu Feng scrutinized the face, feeling a sense of familiarity. He encouraged him, "It's just money. There's always a brighter future in life. At your age, you should have a family, right?"
He nodded.
"Look at your wife!"
“My wife ran off with someone else,” he said, looking up.
"So you've been around for so many years and you don't even have a brother by your side? When you're out in the world, you rely on your brothers. Just keep living, and everything will be alright." Lu Feng squatted down and encouraged him.
"My wife ran off with my best brother!" His voice began to waver, and his emotions became somewhat unstable.
Lu Feng scratched his head anxiously and said, "You still have a child. If you die, the child..."
“The child is theirs, and I was kept in the dark for five years, a full five years!” His voice was already starting to tremble with sobs.
"Parents, you still have parents? Did your parents raise you all these years just so you could jump into the Yellow River and die?"
“They came to my house and made a huge scene. My parents were so angry that they died on the spot. Some time ago, I sold the house in my hometown and buried my parents.”
Lu Feng: ..........
That's terrible. Not to mention him, even Lu Feng wouldn't want to live after hearing what he said.
“You can’t save him. If he could, he wouldn’t have stayed here for so many days.” Zhang Fengxia appeared behind him at some point and said, “Don’t think of yourself as a saint. Everyone who goes down a dead end has their own unavoidable difficulties. There’s always a reason why someone is pitiful, and vice versa.”
Lu Feng stared at him, feeling that the face was familiar, but he couldn't quite place it. He asked, "What's your surname?"
"My surname is Du, my name is Johnnie To, and I am thirty-four years old this year..." he murmured, recounting everything about himself as if he were recounting an obituary.
Lu Feng slapped his forehead and finally remembered. Wasn't this the famous DVD king, Boss Du, who was hugely popular in the late 1990s?
This person's business has been so-so since 2010, and he's basically semi-retired. He sometimes does angel investing and such, and few people know about him. However, Lu Feng read a book called "The Book of Benevolence" in his previous life.
This book is not a collection of information about how rich a certain person is. Instead, it is a collection of information about many businessmen who have had a bumpy life. Among them, the one that Lu Feng remembers most is Johnnie To, a person with the same name as a famous director.
He experienced his father's bankruptcy when he was young, followed by betrayal by his business partner, his wife, and the early death of his parents. At his poorest, he slept in parks for half a year and became a homeless person. Even so, he eventually found a job and in August 1993, he received an investment to open a cassette tape store.
