Lu Feng went downstairs, flagged down a Benben car, and headed straight for People's Park.
The park was quite crowded today, and the weather was pleasantly cool. Couples strolled along the tree-lined paths. Lu Feng looked around and walked towards the statue.
After waiting for several minutes without seeing anyone, Lu Feng suddenly felt a tap on his back. He turned around and saw a person wearing a baseball cap with the brim pulled low, obscuring their face.
"Come with me!"
Lu Feng recognized her voice and looked around again, but didn't see her husband. After all, the couple were quite skilled, and if they really fought, even ten Lu Fengs wouldn't be a match for them.
"Where are we going?" Lu Feng asked.
"Just follow me." The aunt said, looking around and asking, "Are you alone?"
"yes!"
She walked around the park and sat down on a lawn near the west gate. She took off her hat, revealing a pale face, and put the hat on Lu Feng's head.
"Why are you putting a hat on me?" Lu Feng asked, puzzled.
“Keep it on. I don’t know if you brought anyone with you. Even if you did, they don’t know me, but they know you. If you cover your face, they won’t notice for a while, and I’ll give myself a chance to leave.” The aunt looked at Lu Feng and said, “You really are a rich person, bringing 200,000 yuan per person.”
Lu Feng was genuinely surprised by her thoughtfulness and smiled, saying, "Two hundred thousand is nothing to me. How have you been lately?"
Do I look good like this?
"Why are your eyes so red?" Lu Feng asked, puzzled.
"She cried and couldn't sleep all night." The aunt's eyes were somewhat vacant.
"Don't you people who do this feel any remorse?" Lu Feng scoffed, a hint of disdain in his voice.
"It wasn't because of theft, it was because of other things. After we got off the train, so many things happened. Your knife left us with nothing, including our wallets. We were terrified and didn't dare to stay!"
"Then why isn't there a wallet with a white plum blossom design?"
"White plum blossoms? Who?"
"It's the little girl sitting next to me!"
"Her money was wrapped in a piece of cloth, and I just put it in my pocket. It was with that little bit of money that we left the train station. The two of us almost starved to death." A look of sadness appeared on the aunt's face.
“You’re not going to lose your jobs. You can just find a place with lots of people and start working again.” Lu Feng patted his pocket, took out a cigarette, lit it, and casually handed it to the aunt next to him. He could tell that the aunt needed someone to talk to!
The aunt took the cigarette, and Lu Feng lit it for her.
“You don’t understand this business. There are pickpockets everywhere. There are pickpockets in shopping malls and pickpockets on trains. If you go in rashly, you’ll just get caught and crippled by the local pickpockets. We’re from out of town. It’s okay on the train; we can just get off early. But if we get caught in places like shopping malls or markets, we’re really done for.”
Lu Feng nodded, wanting to chat a bit more and learn more about the industry, and asked, "Why did you help me when those thieves threatened me? You even cut one of their hands."
"Stealing this thing is like magic. First, you need to be quick, and second, you need to be focused. The little girl next to you is completely focused on you. She won't even know if her money has been stolen. They have to keep you around because everyone in the carriage suspects you of being a thief, and all their attention is on you," the aunt explained.
Lu Feng suddenly realized and nodded, saying, "It's very scientifically based. I've learned something. So how did they steal the ledger later? Did they scout the place beforehand?"
"We were desperate and ran into trouble on the train. We didn't dare to make a move. We had no idea what to eat or drink, so we remembered Erni from the village. She was a distant relative of this family and had worked as a nanny here. Erni is such a show-off!"
"After being in the city for a few days, he went around the village talking about how rich people were, and how the whole village knew the combination to their safes. It wasn't a secret."
"Why would he tell the combination to a distant relative, the nanny, for his safe?" Lu Feng wondered.
"How would I know where to go? I just happened to be here, and I had no choice but to follow Erni's directions. I asked around and found my way there. When I opened the safe, I was terrified. It was full of money. I didn't care about anything else and just stuffed it all into my bag. When I got back and counted it, I found some gold jewelry and an account book."
The aunt spoke slowly, as if she were talking about someone else's affairs, but a ripple appeared in her eyes, and her heart was far from calm.
"And then what?"
“I thought, now that I’m rich, I won’t go back to the village, and I’ll never have to worry about anything again. But I never expected that he would change once he had money. He deposited the money in the bank, leaving tens of thousands of yuan. He said he was going out to relax, and that very day he met a young girl at a dance hall.”
Lu Feng sensed a hint of gossip and pressed, "And then?"
"Men with money go bad, it's an age-old truth!" The aunt sighed and continued, "I kept urging him to come back, but he kept putting it off. He went to a hotel with that woman, spent money on her, and dressed up like a respectable person. Then he came back and started threatening to divorce me."
Lu Feng clicked his tongue and said, "Uncle, you're over forty years old, and you're doing this kind of thing. I never would have guessed. You can know a person's face but not their heart!"
“I’ve lived with him for over twenty years and I never saw through him, let alone someone like you who just met him. He took most of the money, saying he wanted to live in the city with this woman. I got the account book and wanted to sell it for some money. These past ten days have felt like a dream! A nightmare!” The aunt’s eyes reddened as she spoke.
