A person carelessly discarded by the past has some things they can't say to anyone.
He called Vice Mayor Liu to offer him some holiday treats, but Liu declined. He also considered calling Huang Youwei, hoping to spend the New Year with him if all else failed.
This idea was ultimately rejected by Lu Feng.
Work-related small talk is just polite formalities; what Lu Feng needs right now is not that. He needs a home, a place where his heart can rest.
On the third day, Lu Feng finally agreed to go back to Liu Cheng's house for a meal. Liu Cheng's house was quite big; it was a three-story villa that he had built himself. This was a common preference among southerners—to build their own villas to live in.
Liu Cheng's wife is a high school teacher with fair skin and glasses. When she saw Lu Feng carrying things in, she hurriedly took them and said, "Come in quickly. It's okay to come in. What did you buy? You're such a big boss, we're more than happy to welcome you. Old Liu always talks about you, but I didn't expect you to be so young."
Lu Feng didn't say a word, but she had already rattled off a long string of words, showing that she was a talkative person.
"It's the New Year, it's not appropriate to come empty-handed." Lu Feng said politely, noticing a shy-looking child of about seven or eight years old come out.
"Call for help!"
Hello, Uncle!
"Hello, hello, here's your New Year's money!" Lu Feng said, pulling a large red envelope from his pocket. The couple tried to refuse it for a while.
The child took the red envelope with a smile on his face, squeezed it with his hand, and was obviously quite satisfied with the money inside. Little did he know that Lu Feng had stuffed a stack of ten-yuan bills inside. It felt thick, but it was actually only a few hundred yuan.
But there are quite a lot!
"How did the midterm exams go?" Lu Feng asked him as he sat down.
"This child never studies properly," Liu Cheng sighed, sounding helpless.
The little guy's joy faded considerably, and he gave Lu Feng an awkward smile, saying, "It's alright!"
"Have you finished your winter break homework?" Lu Feng asked again.
He couldn't laugh anymore. After being glared at by Liu Cheng, he obediently went back to his room to do his homework.
The 27th day of the twelfth lunar month is considered the beginning of the new year. During dinner, firecrackers were going off outside, one house after another, creating a sense of competition.
Lu Feng and Liu Cheng sat and drank.
"I get annoyed during holidays!" Lu Feng leaned back in his chair, smoking a cigarette, looking somewhat melancholy.
“President Lu, you’re so young and rich. If you can’t remarry, just find someone else. It’s easy to find someone!” Liu Cheng advised. “Let’s put aside our superior-subordinate relationship. As an older brother, I want to give you some advice. It’s not appropriate to do this during holidays.”
"No, women are easy to find. I'm not bragging!" Lu Feng, slightly tipsy, put a hand on Liu Cheng's shoulder and said, "Me? I... hiccup... If I wanted, I could have a beautiful woman marry me tomorrow. But what I want isn't a woman, I want a home."
"I understand, I understand! I'm older than you, I know how you feel." Liu Cheng's face was flushed, and his voice began to waver as he said to Lu Feng, "You can't be so lonely. I wanted to talk to you a few days ago, why don't you go home? Are you having problems with your family because of the divorce?"
"No, this matter... Oh well... Let's drink!" Lu Feng sighed, his face full of a sense of vicissitude that others couldn't understand, and picked up his wine glass, saying, "It's all in the wine."
The two drank their drinks in one gulp. Lu Feng picked up his chopsticks and took a bite of the cucumber salad. Liu Cheng had obviously drunk more than him. He picked up his chopsticks and wanted to take a bite as well, but his chopsticks kept sticking out of the plate, so he gave up in the end.
“With my current wealth, what can’t I have? I can easily find a bunch of beautiful women, and even go to karaoke and spend like crazy, spending two million in one night, I can afford it,” Lu Feng said to him. “As for women, I don’t care for them at all; I can get any kind I want. But… but what’s the point of all that?”
"I understand! I understand!" Liu Cheng nodded repeatedly, lit a cigarette, and rested his chin on his hand, looking dazed.
Lu Feng knew he didn't understand. He glanced at the time; it was already past nine o'clock at night. He said to him, "Get some rest. I'm going back too."
"There are rooms available, why don't you stay here? It's so late." Liu Cheng stood up, staggering, and tried to persuade him to stay, "Let's drink a little longer."
"That's enough drinking. Go to sleep early. The documents are coming tomorrow, and you have to go to work." Lu Feng reassured him for a few moments before heading towards the door.
