On August 14th, as autumn deepens in the north, the full moon symbolizes reunion and togetherness. Compared to the galas and online events of many years ago, the atmosphere is less lively now, but people are much closer in their interactions.
Lu Feng couldn't understand why, despite the abundance of entertainment options available years later, holidays and New Year celebrations lacked the liveliness of his childhood.
Back then, he always felt that he had grown up. It wasn't until now, standing in the 1990s, that he seemed to understand that there was no internet, people weren't as busy, and most people preferred to communicate. You could always see people gathered together on the streets and alleys, chatting enthusiastically.
Years later, silence reigns both on the streets and at home.
The so-called festive atmosphere or New Year's spirit is just a group of people gathering together to chat, peeking into the magical world outside from the adults' snippets of conversation, and hearing some things. But years later, the impact of information has turned everyone into 'mute'!
Jiang Xiaoyan's parents eventually managed to find her phone number through various means. A few days ago, they even called to ask her to come back. After all, they are family, and some things should be left in the past.
Jiang Xiaoyan neither agreed nor refused, but simply told her parents on the phone to take care of their health and that she was doing well working out there.
Compared to Jiang Xiaoyan's troubles, Zhang Fengxia's Mid-Autumn Festival was truly troublesome. She was already fed up with her family's pressure to get married. This Mid-Autumn Festival, her grandfather, father, and mother all came to Shenzhen and even found her a good blind date, and she was waiting to meet him.
The mooncakes were already prepared at home, along with all sorts of fruits, dumplings, vegetables, meat, and drinks. Duoduo sat in front of the TV watching cartoons and asked, "When is Daddy coming back?"
"I'll be back tomorrow!" Jiang Xiaoyan glanced at Zhang Fengxia and said, "Don't worry, just go back and see her, then refuse."
“You make it sound so easy. My family found him for me. They say he’s a returnee from overseas, we have common interests, he’s good-looking, and his family is good too. If I just rejected him, my whole family would eat me alive.” Zhang Fengxia turned her head and said, “If it’s so easy, why don’t you just remarry him?”
"Then what should we do?"
"I'll just borrow him for a bit. Anyway, I'm not interested in that blind date." Zhang Fengxia said with a hint of arrogance, "What a pathetic toad, trying to eat my swan meat."
Jiang Xiaoyan couldn't help but laugh when she heard this, and said, "Okay, I'll definitely find him for you. I'll call him now and ask if he's back yet."
Jiang Xiaoyan picked up the phone and called Lu Feng's office. This was the first time she had called him proactively in a long time; in the past, she had always called through Zhang Fengxia or Duoduo.
The phone rang, and Jiang Xiaoyan's heart tightened slightly.
"Hello, who is this?" Lu Feng's voice came from the other end of the phone.
"Um, I'm your old... um... it's me!" Jiang Xiaoyan didn't know how to introduce herself to him for a moment.
Lu Feng was slightly tipsy and didn't recognize the voice. He asked in confusion, "Who are you?"
"Come over tomorrow if you're not busy. Duoduo is on holiday too, and Fengxia needs to talk to you about something," Jiang Xiaoyan said directly.
"It's you! I just got back today. I've been in meetings all day!" Lu Feng leaned back in his chair, took a drag of his cigarette, and said, "What? Missed me?"
"I just want to talk to you about something. Don't mention it if you don't want to. Come over tomorrow, okay?" Jiang Xiaoyan asked.
"Sure, I was just thinking, after eating dumplings, what will happen tonight...?"
"We'll talk about it tonight. Come over if you're not busy. Neither of us will go to the factory tomorrow."
"OK!"
After hanging up the phone, Lu Feng stood up and went back to his bedroom to lie down. Perhaps it was good for the two of them to maintain this distance for now, neither too far nor too close, neither becoming strangers nor being too intimate.
After drinking some alcohol, Lu Feng felt dizzy and thought about many things, but then dismissed them with his own thoughts.
The next day, September in Shenzhen was sunny and exceptionally hot. By 10 a.m., the car was already like a steamer, with steam rising from the interior.
Lu Feng opened the car door and stood to the side, saying to the person in charge of vehicle dispatch, "It's hot, so park the car in the shade. Parking in that corner over there is much more suitable. If we're picking up an important guest, how are we supposed to get in all this steamy heat?"
"I'm so sorry, Mr. Lu, we will definitely be more careful." The person in charge stood there apologizing repeatedly.
"Use your brain when doing anything!" Lu Feng looked at him, got into the car, started the engine, and sped away into the distance.
As the car drove away, the supervisor turned around and several of his men cursed, "Which idiot left a Mercedes out in the sun? Do you think it's your tricycle?"
Lu Feng drove up to Jiang Xiaoyan's building, took two bottles of red wine from the trunk, and walked upstairs. Some passing neighbors glanced at the car and then at Lu Feng, whispering among themselves.
"Bang, bang, bang!" Lu Feng knocked on the door and said, "Open the door, Duo Duo!"
Jiang Xiaoyan was busy cleaning fish in the kitchen when she poked her head out and said, "Duoduo, go open the door for your dad."
Duoduo jumped off the sofa, opened the door, saw Lu Feng, and smiled. She rushed over to him and said sweetly, "Daddy, I missed you so much!"
"Oh my, my daughter has grown taller again!" Lu Feng picked her up in his arms. The little one was at the age where she was growing, and she was probably about 1.2 meters tall.
"Dad, you went to Thailand?" Duo Duo wrapped her arms around Lu Feng's neck, looking incredibly affectionate, and asked expectantly, "What gift did you bring me?"
"I didn't get any gifts from Thailand. I was thinking of catching a ladyboy for you, but he ran away halfway. I just brought back some dolls instead. I'll get them for you in a bit." Lu Feng closed the door, put Duo Duo on the sofa, and watched Black Cat Detective on TV.
