Little Henan was startled awake by the sound of the door being kicked open. He sat up groggily, his hair a mess, and feeling the cold wind blowing in from the doorway, he cursed, "Who is it? Are you crazy?"
Many people had already gotten up and were cursing at the people outside.
Hao Liu hurriedly put on his pants, got out of bed, and shouted, "Why can you just demolish it like that? People still live here! If it's demolished, where are we going to live?"
"Go wherever you want to live. This was built by the company. Now that the first phase of the project is complete, of course it has to be demolished. This is the last warning to you. If you don't come out, we'll tear it down directly."
Everyone was in a panic. It was early morning, and the people were still asleep. They hadn't packed their belongings, and they hadn't received their wages. If they lost this little bit of their possessions, they would truly be penniless.
Could you postpone it for a few days?
"Yeah, where are we going to stay?"
Everyone pleaded for mercy, but the few thugs standing at the door remained unmoved.
Li Zhiqi stood not far away, smoking a cigarette. He glanced at the people dawdling over there and shouted, "Hurry up! Can't you even do this simple thing right? Damn it, get the bulldozers on board. I don't believe they won't get out."
The bulldozer roared to life, black smoke billowing from its exhaust pipe, and headed straight for the makeshift house. It crashed into the house, and instantly the house swayed like it was made of paper, as if it would fall apart at the slightest bit of force.
Seeing that the house was about to collapse, the people inside panicked and ran out. Some ran out shirtless. Hao Liu rushed out, carrying his belongings, and shouted at the bulldozer driver, "There are people inside! Are you crazy?"
"Push it, damn it, you think you can mess with us? Are you blind? Even China Construction Second Engineering Bureau can't handle you, who do you think you are?" Li Zhiqi shouted, a cigarette between two fingers, "Push it! If anyone dies, it's on me!"
The driver floored the gas pedal and sped toward the makeshift house, only to be instantly knocked to the ground. Someone scrambled out, looking terrified and pale.
"Can't you give us some more time? We're not getting paid, and we can't even come home if we want to."
"Is it really necessary to be so ruthless? Aren't you afraid of retribution?"
"The items are still inside; nothing has been taken out."
The crowd was cursing passionately, but Li Zhiqi stood there unmoved, smoking a cigarette and glancing at the crowd with a cold expression.
Several middle-aged men squatted on the ground, wearing only thin clothes. They wanted to go up and teach them a lesson, but they didn't dare. If they rushed up alone, they would only get beaten up and nothing else. These people were just a disorganized mob.
In less than half an hour, a row of makeshift houses had been turned into a garbage dump on the ground, and everyone could only watch helplessly as a pile of ruins appeared before them.
"You're required to leave today. This is company land. The construction period is over, and you'll be paid your wages, don't worry about that, just not now." After saying that, Li Zhiqi remembered that Wang Huimei was coming to see him today. He walked towards his car, got in, and sped away.
The thugs drove away in their bulldozer, leaving behind a scene of utter devastation.
Lu Feng was sitting in a taxi, just turning the corner to enter the construction site, when he saw a car come out, followed by several bulldozers with more than a dozen people standing on them, holding sticks. His heart skipped a beat, and he immediately had a bad feeling.
The taxi turned into the area, and Lu Feng hurriedly got out. He saw that the row of makeshift houses was gone, and people were standing or squatting in the cold wind. Some people were standing on a pile of collapsed houses, searching for their belongings. The canteen next door had also been demolished.
Lu Feng rushed forward and asked Hao Liu, "What happened here? Who took this down?"
Hao Liu raised his head, his eyes red and his expression full of helplessness. He said, "Li Zhiqi led people to demolish it. He said the construction period was over and all the workers' sheds were going to be demolished. Luckily we ran fast, otherwise we would have been buried inside!"
"This is too...too unfair! My luggage was all inside, it's all crushed!" Xiao Henan said, wiping away tears. The others also looked distressed.
The atmosphere at the scene was filled with a sense of frustration.
"Damn it!!!"
Lu Feng started cursing. These people really had ideas. Without a place to live, these people were like duckweed in the city, so naturally they had no interest in asking for wages.
"I'll get the wages today, don't worry, I'll definitely get them today." Lu Feng couldn't hold back any longer. Now that he basically understood the situation, none of these people could escape.
Everyone looked up at him, their eyes no longer filled with the hope they had felt at the beginning of yesterday. They had given up on getting their wages before the new year. Those with relatives here were trying to find a way to stay with them, and those without relatives were trying to find another way.
The fact that they demolished the house with a bulldozer today is a warning to those who caused trouble yesterday. Since ancient times, the poor have never fought with the rich, and the rich have never fought with officials. They understand this principle. If they were to be provoked and crippled, it would be even more of a loss.
Seeing that no one spoke, Lu Feng noticed that the old general was rummaging through his clothes, finding two pieces that he shook out and put on.
“You can’t bully people like this. You guys need to step up your game. I said I can help you, and I definitely can. Things have already come to this point, how much worse can it get?” Lu Feng said to Hao Liu, “What do you say? Let’s try one more time today.”
Everyone looked dejected. Hao Liu found his coat, put it on, and asked the group, "What do you all think?"
Everyone looked at Lu Feng without saying a word, clearly having given up all hope.
"Since things are already like this, let's try again today. Maybe we can get it. Even if we don't get it, we should at least get a definite answer from him. We need to know when it will be after the New Year," the old general said.
Everyone thought it made sense and nodded in agreement.
