Feng Haidong arrived at the provincial newspaper office as agreed. After registering at the entrance, he entered the office and went to the editor-in-chief's office.
After carefully tidying his clothes, Feng Haidong knocked on the editor-in-chief's office door.
Soon, a voice came from inside: "Please come in."
Feng Haidong gently pushed open the door, bowed slightly, and entered the editor-in-chief's office, asking, "Excuse me, are you the editor-in-chief? I am Feng Haidong."
Upon hearing this, the editor-in-chief put down what he was holding, looked up at Feng Haidong, and said with a smile, "Feng Haidong? Come in, come in quickly, I've been waiting for you."
When Feng Haidong entered the editor-in-chief's office, he first bowed and shook hands with the editor-in-chief.
"Hello, editor-in-chief. I didn't expect you to ask me to come over for a meeting."
The editor-in-chief chuckled and said, "Haidong, you don't need to be so nervous. I heard your city newspaper's editor-in-chief mention you, saying you are very knowledgeable and have a carefree personality. You don't seem like that at all now."
Feng Haidong was somewhat surprised: "You also know our newspaper's editor-in-chief?"
The editor-in-chief smiled and said, "We know each other. We all work at the newspaper, so of course we know each other. Besides, we were classmates back then."
Feng Haidong suddenly realized: "So that's how it is. So it was Editor-in-Chief Fang who recommended me to you?"
The editor-in-chief said, "It's not exactly Fang Yong's recommendation, but your article is indeed very well written. After reading it, I'd like to meet you."
Feng Haidong said politely, "That was just a casual remark, and it may be rather immature. I hope the editor-in-chief can give me some pointers."
The editor-in-chief said, "Come on, sit down first, let's sit down and talk."
At the invitation of editor-in-chief Duan Guanghui, Feng Haidong sat down.
Then Duan Guanghui took out Feng Haidong's manuscript and said seriously, "Haidong, I'm a little curious. How did you come up with the idea to write such an article? I see that a lot of what you wrote in it feels like very real feelings."
Feng Haidong told the other party about his experiences in his shop and what he had asked some people from other places who came to the provincial capital.
After listening, Duan Guanghui's expression gradually became serious.
“These things are really overlooked by many people. Nowadays, our city’s development and construction need a lot of people from other places to participate, but because of regional prejudices, they are not given enough respect.”
Duan Guanghui then looked at Feng Haidong and said, "Haidong, you're also from out of town, you should have your own feelings, right?"
Feng Haidong didn't shy away from the topic and nodded, saying, "I do have some feelings about it. When I first came to the provincial capital, I was often talked about by some locals on the bus. They talked about me in the local dialect of the provincial capital, thinking that I couldn't understand it. But actually, I have lived in the provincial capital and can understand some of it."
Duan Guanghui was somewhat surprised: "Haidong, you've lived in the provincial capital before?"
Feng Haidong said, "Yes, that was when I was very young. My father used to work in the provincial capital, and I attended the second grade of primary school there."
Duan Guanghui was even more surprised: "So, Haidong and I are considered alumni of No. 2 Primary School."
Feng Haidong was also somewhat surprised: "Did the editor-in-chief also attend the Second Primary School?"
Duan Guanghui nodded with a smile: "That's right, back then the Second Primary School was not far from the Provincial Party Committee."
Feng Haidong said, "Yes, yes, it used to be over there. My father used to work in the provincial household registration department."
Duan Guanghui suddenly realized: "So that's how it is. No wonder Haidong, your article also revealed that you have a pretty good understanding of the provincial capital."
Feng Haidong said, "Much of my understanding comes from my childhood memories. The provincial capital has indeed changed a lot in the past few years. When I first came here, I didn't recognize many places."
As Duan Guanghui and Feng Haidong chatted, they gradually found themselves having more and more to talk about.
The two talked about the changes in the provincial capital and some things from the past.
Duan Guanghui hadn't expected that Feng Haidong actually knew quite a bit about the provincial capital.
This also made it easy for the two to get closer.
After discussing some changes in the provincial capital, the two returned to Feng Haidong's articles.
Duan Guanghui said, "Haidong, your article is indeed well written, but it lacks some literary quality. It can only be published as an editorial in the newspaper, but it is not good enough to be published in literary journals."
Feng Haidong was taken aback when he heard this, but slowly he figured out what Duan Guanghui meant.
"Editor Duan, do you want to recommend my article for publication in some literary journals?"
Duan Guanghui nodded and said, "Yes, I think the phenomena you wrote about actually reflect some of today's social realities very well. If you could write them in a more literary way, they should be able to be published in our province's literary journals."
Feng Haidong thought for a moment and asked, "Should we write it as a short story?"
Duan Guanghui said, "Sure, Haidong, your experience of doing business in the provincial capital is quite legendary. You can use your own experiences to connect them and combine them with the experiences of other people to write a short story."
Although Duan Guanghui did not say it explicitly, his words indicated that he appreciated Feng Haidong's writing and hoped to help him advance further, that is, to recommend him for publication in literary journals.
Feng Haidong naturally couldn't let the other party down.
"Since Editor-in-Chief Duan has already said so, I will take advantage of the New Year holiday to prepare properly and try to write a rough draft. I will need Editor-in-Chief Duan's guidance at that time."
Duan Guanghui smiled and said, "Sure, it's the Lunar New Year holiday, and your shop should be closed too, right? You can think about it carefully. There's no need to rush to write. First, brainstorm, and then write slowly. After all, it's going to be published in a literary magazine, so you need to carefully consider your word choice and sentence structure."
