Chapter 60 The Father's Full Support

Feng Haidong took his son on a bus and drove all the way back to the town where his parents lived in retirement.

Fortunately, my parents live not too far from the bus stop.

The father and son got out of the car, carrying the things they had brought back, and didn't have to walk far to the courtyard where Feng Haidong's parents lived.

The place where Feng Haidong's parents live today is a very simple and rustic courtyard.

It is quite similar in size to a traditional courtyard house. Entering through a main gate, you are greeted by a screen wall. After passing the screen wall, you enter a very spacious courtyard.

The original flower beds in the courtyard have now been removed, and the stone path along the central axis has divided the courtyard into two sections.

Two plots of land have been cultivated; one is planted with various flowers, and the other with various vegetables and fruits.

It must be said that such a spacious farmhouse courtyard truly exudes a sense of tranquility and contentment.

This courtyard was once owned by a wealthy family in the town. It was built in the style of a traditional courtyard house in Beijing, and all the walls and roads were constructed using materials salvaged from the mountains behind the town, all made of large bluestone.

Later, this small courtyard became the location of the town government.

The town government moved away a few years ago.

Because the courtyard had been empty for a long time, the town later let Feng Haidong's parents live in it in order to take care of them after they retired and returned to their hometown.

Of course, the property rights do not belong to Feng Haidong's parents. It's just that the town has taken care of Feng Haidong's parents because they made a lot of contributions to the town in the past, so they arranged for the retired elderly couple to stay temporarily.

In his previous life, after Feng Haidong's parents passed away, the town took back the small courtyard.

However, Feng Haidong later heard that the town was developing tourism, and the courtyard had been bought by a private individual.

"Oh my, my grandson is back! Come and let Grandma see him."

After Feng Haidong led his son into the house, he stared blankly at the familiar yet unfamiliar courtyard when he suddenly heard his mother's voice.

Coming to his senses, Feng Haidong saw his mother standing in front of the door and quickly nudged his son, saying, "Go on."

Feng Qifan also ran quickly to his grandmother in front of the door and called out affectionately, "Grandma."

Grandma hugged Feng Qifan tightly and said with great affection, "I heard from your grandpa that my grandson is very capable now. He will be performing for the whole school on Children's Day. Grandma thought you wouldn't be able to come back this week."

Feng Qifan said with a smile, "Grandma, Dad didn't want me to come back with him, but I told him that Grandpa came to our house and I saw him, but I didn't see Grandma. I missed Grandma, so I insisted on coming back with Dad to see Grandma."

Grandma was really happy to hear what Feng Qifan said.

The old lady said happily, "That's great. It's my eldest grandson who still cares about his grandma. Grandma's love for you has not been in vain."

Then the old lady took her grandson into the house and took out all kinds of candies she had prepared for him to eat.

Feng Haidong first took the things he brought back into the house, then went out to the vegetable garden to help his father with the work.

"Dad, you've grown these bok choy really well."

Hearing his son's words, Feng Chungu said with some pride, "It's alright. The main thing is that we're giving them plenty of fertilizer. There's an outhouse in the courtyard, so we don't lack fertilizer."

Nowadays, not every household in the countryside has its own toilet; most families share a single public toilet.

In the former town government compound where Feng Haidong's parents lived, there used to be a large public toilet.

Whether the town government was located in this courtyard back then or has since moved away, the toilet in the courtyard remains the only public toilet within a radius of several miles.

Feng Haidong's parents would not refuse to let people from the town use their toilets just because they moved in.

Therefore, the gate to the courtyard is never locked.

Feng Chungu handed the hoe to Feng Haidong, letting him try it out and see if Feng Haidong could still do farm work after so many years.

Feng Haidong took the hoe and, following the example his father had set out, continued hoeing the ground.

At first, Feng Haidong was a bit rusty, but he gradually got the hang of it after working for a while.

Feng Chungu watched as her son gradually became familiar with the place, and nodded with satisfaction.

Then Feng Chun-gu started chatting with her son: "Hai-dong, how's business at your night market stall? I heard from Bao-an that he delivered shrimp to you again yesterday?"

While working, Feng Haidong replied, "Business is pretty good. Anyway, I don't make too much each night; it's basically all sold out."

Feng Chun-Gu then asked, "Will they sell out very late?"

Feng Haidong nodded: "Yes, sometimes it's quite late."

Feng Chun-gu asked, "Wan-ling will definitely be waiting for you to come home, right?"

Feng Haidong nodded again: "Yes, I've told her several times to lock the door and go to sleep first, since I have the key with me, but she insists on waiting for me to come home every night."

Upon hearing this, Feng Chungu said, "Wanling is a good daughter-in-law."

Feng Haidong said, "I know."

Feng Chun-gu then asked, "Tell me the truth, why are you rushing to start your own business? Have you run into some trouble? Do you need money?"

Upon hearing his father's words, Feng Haidong stopped what he was doing.

He hesitated for a moment, but still confessed to his father with a serious expression.

"Dad, Wanling is pregnant."

Upon hearing this, Feng Chungu was stunned and looked at her son in disbelief.

After a long while, Feng Chungu roughly understood his son's thoughts.

"You and Wanling are planning to have this child? So you want to hurry up and earn money so you can pay the expansion fee, right?"

Feng Haidong nodded and said, "Yes, I know this goes against the current policy, but Wanling and I really want this child. Whether it's a boy or a girl, they can keep Fanfan company in the future. When Wanling and I get older and something happens, the two children can discuss things together."
