Xu Wei thought about it carefully and said, "Okay, let's go with the Battle of Taierzhuang. I've seen the movie, it's very good."
Wang Peng smiled and nodded.
The videotape of this movie has been bought and is kept at Li Longfei's house, ready to be played anytime.
"Principal, we need to borrow the video recorder, the television, and the videotapes; we'll have to pay them," Wang Peng said with a smile.
“I know,” Xu Wei said. “We already discussed it at the meeting. We’ll give you twenty-five yuan for each movie screening. How about that?”
Wang Peng was taken aback. "Principal, what is the basis for this price?"
Xu Wei smiled slightly.
"The ticket price for the video arcade is 50 cents per person, and each of our classes has an average of 50 people."
"Xiaopeng, don't try to bargain with me."
"If you don't get first place in the provincial math competition, you won't get to earn this money, understand?"
"Understood, thank you, Principal." Wang Peng nodded hurriedly.
There are 35 classes in the whole school. If each class pays 25 yuan, that's 875 yuan, which is a huge sum of money.
"Also, after the class screening, take the equipment to the conference room and show a movie to all the academic staff."
"It's not the Battle of Taierzhuang, but other movies, being shown for free," Xu Wei said.
"No problem," Wang Peng readily agreed, then asked, "Principal, what movie should we show?"
"Let me think about it." Xu Wei frowned as he pondered.
Wang Peng waited for him to think it over.
This deal is definitely profitable; the only costs are the wear and tear on the videotapes, while the electricity and venue costs are covered by the school.
"Let's go with New Dragon Gate Inn. Teachers need entertainment too, don't you think?" Xu Wei said.
“Yes, yes, you’re right.” Wang Peng immediately gave him a thumbs up. “I was able to find this movie.”
"Okay." Xu Wei stood up, patted him on the shoulder, and said, "I'll hold an awards ceremony for you this afternoon and present you with the award on the spot."
"Thank you, Principal." Wang Peng pretended to be very amused.
He didn't like the commendation ceremony, which felt like being a mascot displayed in front of all the teachers and students.
But this kind of thing does have a lot of benefits, at the very least it can increase one's visibility at school.
The awards ceremony officially began during the last two periods of the afternoon.
All the students carried their own stools to the square below the teaching building and sat down to wait for the meeting to begin.
Wang Peng sat in the crowd, silently reciting the speech his homeroom teacher had given him.
At this moment, Du Lei rode his bicycle back from the guardhouse, carrying a pile of letters in his hand.
"Du Xiaofeng, your letter."
"Dongshan, it's yours."
"Brother Peng, here you go."
He distributed letters to his classmates. The post office always left the letters at the security room at the main gate, and the class officers were responsible for picking them up.
Wang Peng looked at the envelope. It had a stamp with a Peking Opera mask on it, the return address was in the provincial capital, and the sender was Li Mingyue.
"snort!"
He heard a cold snort, turned his head and saw Li Mengjiao pouting, looking somewhat arrogant.
"What are you humming about? Who upset you?" Wang Peng asked in a low voice.
"None of your business?" Li Mengjiao glared at him and looked up at the podium in front of her.
She was somewhat puzzled.
Wang Peng assumed she was on her period and didn't pay much attention, opening the envelope and taking out the letter.
In the letter, Li Mingzhu first congratulated Wang Peng on achieving first place in the provincial mathematics league.
Then she started complaining about her poor grades and how she had been feeling very irritable lately.
She only got third place in the province, which is a very embarrassing ranking.
The letter ended with three sentences.
"Wang Peng, tell me the truth, do you like me?"
"We've never met before, so why are you interested in me?"
"Explain yourself clearly, or I won't write to you anymore."
Wang Peng was stunned by these three sentences.
He truly loved her; after all, she was his wife from a past life, the one with whom he had shared countless hardships, yet who had left him with numerous regrets.
At that moment, Wang Peng felt himself being stared at.
I looked up abruptly and saw Du Lei grinning smugly.
"Brother Peng, Mingzhu confessed her feelings to you?" he whispered.
"You little brat, you want a beating, don't you? Peeking at my letter?" Wang Peng glared at him.
"No, no," Du Lei hurriedly waved his hand and whispered, "I guessed it because I saw your ambiguous smile."
Wang Peng lowered his fist and decided to let him go.
At this moment, Principal Xu Wei and other leaders took their seats, and the meeting room began to quiet down.
The meeting was chaired by Zhou Xiayu, the president of the student union.
The first item on the agenda was the principal's report to all students.
The long, tedious official jargon made everyone drowsy, and Wang Peng couldn't listen to it either.
After the principal finished speaking, the vice-principal spoke, also delivering a long and tedious official speech.
Zhou Hai spoke for ten minutes, then suddenly changed the subject.
"As you all have heard, Wang Peng from Class 1 of Grade 11 has achieved first place in the provincial mathematics league."
"This is the best result in mathematics that our Ping'an County No. 1 Middle School has achieved since its establishment."
"The school decided to award him 500 yuan in cash. Everyone applauded and welcomed Wang Peng to the stage to receive the award."
After he finished speaking, he immediately stood up and applauded.
Other school leaders also began to applaud.
A gasp rippled through the crowd; five hundred yuan was no small sum.
More and more people started clapping, and finally the applause thundered.
To make the performance complete, Wang Peng walked onto the stage with his head held high and chest out amidst applause.
He raised his hand to salute Zhou Hai, took five hundred yuan from his hand, turned to face the students, and bowed to all the students.
The applause grew even louder, and countless envious and jealous glances were directed at him.
