Chapter 25: Leave, County Examination

For more than half a month, Shen Anning worked in the fields every day according to the standard of six work points. Although she could earn more by trying hard, it was really unnecessary.

In the morning, Shen An Ning goes to work by herself and goes home to cook at noon. Every afternoon, Shen Anyu and Shen Anxuan come to help her. The three of them work together, so they can get off work much earlier. In the past half month, Shen An Ning would read medical books at night and review basic medicine to avoid embarrassment.

On May 8th, Shen Anning went to the village head and the party secretary to get a letter of introduction. She was going to the county to take the medical qualification examination, and she couldn't do it without a certificate.

In order not to attract attention, she chose to go there at noon. In order to protect Shen An Ning, the village chief and the party secretary did not tell the village about it. You know, people in the village who took the exam in previous years are also thinking about it during this period. The fact that no one in the village took the exam for two consecutive years does not mean that everyone does not care.

After getting the stamped recommendation letter from the commune and the certificate from the village, Shen Anning planned to go to the county a day in advance for convenience during the exam. The exam would be at 9 a.m. on the 10th, so he would go there a day in advance to get a feel for the route.

After dinner in the evening, Shen Anning took a walk to the educated youth site. In the yard, Sun Miaomiao was digging the ground to plant some vegetables.

"Hey, An Ning, you're here." Some of the female educated youth moved stools and sat in the yard to mend clothes, while others were tidying up dishes in the kitchen.

Xu Hongxia had been tanned several degrees darker working in the fields these days. Shen Anning observed her carefully and found that she had changed a lot from when she first came. Because there were only girls in this yard, it was very convenient for everyone to take a shower at night, and they didn't have to be as restrained as when men and women lived together.

"Hey, An Ning, what brand of soap did you buy for Xinrong, Xinhua and the others last time? It smells really good." Xu Hongxia was a little excited when she saw Shen An Ning after taking a shower. She had smelled it a few days ago, and when she used it today, it really smelled good, and her body felt very comfortable after taking a shower.

The educated youth sitting in the yard looked at Shen Anning and cast hopeful glances at her.

Shen Anning thought for a moment and said, "Well, I heard it's from outside. I don't know the specific brand. If you want it, I'll go to the county this time to show you around and buy it for you. If you have a ticket, it's 35 cents. If you don't have a ticket, the soap is 50 cents a piece. Don't tell anyone about it. This was secretly sold to me by that big sister last time."

It's normal for sales clerks in supply and marketing cooperatives and department stores to have their own ways, and everyone understands.

"Are you going to the county in the next few days?" Xu Hongxia was a little happy. She really liked soap.

"Yes, I've taken a leave of absence tomorrow. I have something to do in the county. I'm a little worried about my two younger brothers and sisters at home, so I'll let them room with you tomorrow. I'd also like to trouble you and Sister Wanli to stay with them for one night." Shen An Ning explained her purpose, and Xu Hongxia and Qi Wanli agreed very happily.

She left the educated youth camp with five yuan, which was given to her by a female educated youth to help her buy soap.

In the evening, I tidied up the house and put some things away. I told my younger brother and sister that I would let them stay at home tomorrow and go to the educated youth camp for lunch and dinner.

Early in the morning on the 9th, Shen Anning still wanted to get up as usual at work time. Because the ox carts did not go to the town every day during the busy farming season, she had to go there on her legs.

Before five o'clock, Shen Anning walked to the entrance of the village, picked a small path to take out the bicycle, rode to the town, had breakfast at the state-owned restaurant, and got on the bus to the county town on time.

When they arrived at the county town, it was lunchtime. Shen Anning didn't go to the state-owned restaurant to squeeze in with the crowd. Instead, she went to the post office to make a phone call. At this point, her aunt should be taking a break.

"aunt."

"Hey, An Ning, how are you doing recently? Are you okay? Are you used to the food? Can you do the farm work? Have you seen your grandparents? Are you feeling well?"

Listening to her aunt's barrage of words, Shen Anning didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Aunt, everything is fine here, and my grandparents are also fine. It's just that I haven't been able to see my parents and brother and sister-in-law yet, so I don't know their situation for the time being."

Shen Anning briefly told Shen Yipei what had happened in the past half month and told them not to worry.

Shen Yipei was worried on the other end of the phone. "Your uncle will also ask someone to take care of the farm. Don't worry, take your time. Ningning, you must remember to protect yourself first."

"Yes, Auntie, I understand."

The call lasted about eight minutes and I paid eight dollars and eighty cents. Long-distance calls are too expensive now. I also bought several sets of stamps and envelopes. My second brother is probably in the recruit training, and I don’t know where he will be assigned after the training. It is not convenient to send letters now.

I strolled to the supply and marketing cooperative, and remembered that I had some tickets that were about to expire, so I went in to take a look. Compared with the department store in Beijing, it was really a world of difference.

After buying two pieces of paper, Shen Anning found the counter selling enamel basins and asked, “Comrade, hello, let me ask, do you have a coal stove now?”

Li Fang looked at Shen Anning and said, "You are not a local, right?"

"Well, I'm an educated youth who just arrived here this year."

Li Fang looked as if she understood. "That's what I was thinking. It's May now. If you want a coal stove, you should come around early October. They're only available at that time of year."

So that’s how it is, selling things is also seasonal, “Okay, thank you, comrade.

Unable to buy a coal stove, Shen Anning was not in a hurry. He first went to the guesthouse to get a room, went into the space, took out the book he had read recently and flipped through it carefully, made himself a cup of milk tea, and ate some fruit.

I stayed in there for about forty hours. When I came out, it was already past five in the morning. I put the letter of introduction and pen together, put on my army green shoulder bag, checked out of the hotel first, and then went to the state-owned restaurant to buy a pound of buns, which cost me three cents plus a pound of food coupons.
