Chapter 262 Farewell

"Is Grandpa Wang not feeling well?"

No one in the office answered her question, but Shen Anning knew that silence was the answer from her senior brothers and sisters.

"Big Brother, how long will Grandpa Wang last?"

Fang Boyu knew that his junior sister was a sentimental person, so he didn't intend to hide it. He told her the truth, "It will probably happen in the next two days. Mr. Wang's lung disease has spread to other parts of his body. It could happen at any time."

Elder Cheng, who was sitting on the chair, sighed and stood up. "Let's go notify the family and ask Mr. Wang about his wishes. Let's see if he wants to stay in the hospital or go home."

As a doctor, Shen Anning thought she had made these preparations long ago. She could persuade Wu Siqi and others to face the loss of life, but when it came to herself, she found that this was too difficult...

When she walked out of the office, tears flowed uncontrollably. On the way to the cafeteria, the young nurses who knew her looked at her worriedly, and some even stuffed a few pieces of paper into her hands.

Until she reached the back kitchen of the hospital cafeteria, the meat and vegetables she brought in the morning were neatly placed on the stove.

"Hey, Dr. Shen, what's going on?"

"Why are you crying? Did you get mad at me in front of you?"

"Hey, these people, Doctor Shen, don't bother with them. This is all for the lives of your family. If they say anything unpleasant, just pretend you didn't hear it. When they come to buy food, tell Uncle Fatty and he will help you deal with them."

Shen Anning wiped her tears and spoke in a stammering voice, "Master Fat, I'm fine, thank you. I heard that your braised pork is particularly good. Could you please make an authentic braised pork?"

The man known as the Fat Master was Dou Cheng. Actually, he wasn't fat at all now. He was a tall, thin, middle-aged man. Shen Anning had heard from the old people in the hospital that many years ago, when the Fat Master was still young, his family was well-off and his father was capable. He was indeed fat then, but something happened later. His father became seriously ill and passed away. During the month he stayed in the hospital to take care of him, he lost a lot of weight.

Later, he worked as a cook in this hospital and has been working there for many years.

"Which patient wants to eat it?"

Shen Anning nodded and said, "Grandpa Wang from the experimental project, Fat Master, please make him a special portion of authentic braised pork today. I will make the braised pork for everyone else."

After hearing this, Dou Cheng roughly understood what was going on. Usually, the ten old men cooked their meals separately, with the amount of meat and vegetable staples, as well as the amount of oil and salt, all standardized.

It seems that Mr. Wang will not make it this time. Thinking of his old father lying on the hospital bed and unable to even drink water, the fat chef thought that it was good to be able to eat. It was a good thing to be able to eat his favorite food before he died.

With a wave of his knife, Dou Cheng cut off two taels of pork belly. He washed the meat carefully, cut it into even-sized pieces, and prepared the spices and seasonings. In all his years in the hospital cafeteria, he rarely used his full skills to cook meat dishes. This was the first time he was so serious.

The meat dishes prepared by Shen Anning were still as required by the recipe, with less salt and not too much soy sauce.

Lunch was braised pork, cabbage, tofu and vermicelli, stir-fried shredded radish, and two white flour buns.

When Shen Anning and the canteen's kitchen helper delivered the meal to the ward, Mr. Wang's family was already there. His wife, Aunt Wang, came with their two sons and two daughters and was packing up. They must have known about Mr. Wang's physical condition, so they planned to bring him home in the last few days to accompany his family and see his grandchildren.

No one in the ward was sad, at least that was what it seemed on the surface. Everyone was talking and laughing, chatting about daily life in the hospital and outside.

Shen Anning distributed the food to everyone and smiled at Grandpa Wang, "Grandpa Wang, we have braised pork and steamed buns for lunch today. You have to eat before you go back. The meat tastes different today. The fat chef said this is the best he has ever made."

"Yeah, Lao Wang, you won't be able to enjoy the fat chef's cooking anymore after you're discharged from the hospital. Ten or twenty years ago, he was only a chef at a big hotel."

"Yes, Wang's boy, if your dad doesn't like the food at home, remember to come to the hospital to buy food."

The two sons of the Wang family nodded repeatedly with a smile without any sadness. They were not the kind of unfilial children. When they learned about their father's illness in the morning, they immediately decided to come and take their father home. Their father had never enjoyed any happiness in his life. It was their fault as sons that they did not take the illness seriously when it was mild, and as a result, the condition became more and more serious.

As soon as Mr. Wang took the first bite, he felt that today's braised pork was different. It was fat but not greasy, and the texture that melted in his mouth was the most delicious thing he had never tasted in his entire life. The braised pork in state-owned restaurants could not be compared at all.

Looking at the meat in the lunch box of his fellow patient, which was different from his, Old Man Wang nodded and smiled at Shen Anning. It was thoughtful of him that he could eat such delicious braised pork even when he was about to die. It was not in vain that he lived.

Old man Wang ate five out of ten pieces of meat and planned to take the rest back to his wife to try. She had lived with him all her life, suffered a lot, raised children and took care of the family, but he passed away and the family still relied on her. Fortunately, the children were filial...

"Okay, don't see me off. We are destined to live in the same ward. I, your old brother, will go first." Old man Wang turned around and waved, then walked in front, with his wife by his side, and his son and daughter walking behind them.

Shen Anning looked at this family and couldn't let it go for a long time, until he walked through the corridor and could no longer see their backs. The grandfathers who returned to the ward were also very sad and secretly wiped away their tears.
