Chapter 29 County Training

Because the training in the county would take a week, Shen Anning thought about the arrangements for her younger brother and sister. It was unrealistic to take them to the city, and she couldn't ride a bike back every day. She had no choice but to stroll to the educated youth site again, and it was just the right time to talk about having dinner together tomorrow.

As soon as I entered the door, I heard applause. Several female educated youth stood in a row, with sincere smiles on their faces. Xu Hongxia laughed so hard that her double chin showed. Shen Anning could feel the sincerity of these people.

Shen Anning was very happy. Although they had not been together for a long time, they had a really good relationship. "Thank you, comrades. I am very grateful to you all. I will treat you to lunch tomorrow in my yard. You just need to bring your lunch utensils and stools. You can also call the male educated youth and we can have a good gathering."

"Okay, we'll pack up and go there after work tomorrow at noon." Xu Hongxia and the others had already figured it out. Everyone has their own destiny. This is a good opportunity, but they have never studied medicine, so they won't be able to seize this chance.

"Okay, by the way, Hongxia, I'm going to the county for training next week and won't be back every day. You and the sisters should go and accompany them at night."

"Okay, don't worry. You can treat us to a big meal tomorrow. We will take good care of your younger brother and sister."

After saying goodbye to the educated youth, Chen Anning returned home and prepared dinner. Tonight, she would take her younger siblings to visit her grandparents to share the good news and celebrate as a family. She stuffed a chicken with seasoning and stewed it directly in a casserole. She also cut a pound of pork belly into pieces and made a plate of it. She also stewed two spare ribs and a few potatoes, stir-fried a plate of artemisia argyi sprouts, and added a plate of mapo tofu to go with rice. After the dishes were cooked, they were placed in the kitchen to keep them warm.

By eight o'clock, when everyone in the village had gone to bed, they brought their younger brothers and sisters and carried food to Grandpa Shen's place. Grandpa Shen had been prepared. Hearing the footsteps of one adult and two children, he opened the door and welcomed them in.

The two old people congratulated Shen Anning on passing the exam. Grandpa Shen was even more proud and said, "She is worthy of being my granddaughter."

"You old man, if you want to praise yourself, just say it directly. You have to use your granddaughter as a target." The twins were so amused by their grandparents that they laughed out loud.

A table full of dishes was laid out, and Shen Zhaolin's appetite was aroused. "An Ning's cooking skills are really getting better and better. There are so many authentic dishes."

"Then Grandpa, you can eat more tonight, and the rest will be saved for you and Grandma tomorrow." Ten steamed buns made of 200g of flour were shared by several people, and everyone was very satisfied.

The next day, Sunday, Shen Anning didn't have to go to work anymore. She wanted to treat the educated youth to dinner in the evening. After thinking about it, she decided to bring the village heads, party secretaries, and accountants of the two villages along as they had all helped her a lot.

Having made up her mind, Shen Anning rode her bicycle to the town, bought a stack of expired newspapers at the post office, and sent a letter to her aunt and uncle, telling them about her current situation. She strolled around the supply and marketing cooperative and saw the newly harvested leeks, which were in bundles and very fresh. Shen Anning didn't have any leeks in her space. They were four cents a pound, so she bought ten pounds directly, spending forty cents, so that she could make leek boxes to eat in the evening.

She returned home at nine o'clock and planned to go to the county in the afternoon to avoid being late the next morning. She took out two pounds of pork, two ribs, two sausages, a few chicken racks, and some eggs, duck eggs, and vermicelli. Anyway, Geng Chengyi and others brought things when they came yesterday, and she went to the town again today, and others didn't know what she bought.

Thinking about the wild vegetable steamed bread, steamed buns and pancakes made of two-grain or black flour that they usually eat in the evening, Shen An Ning did not dare to prepare the staple food too well. He used more cornmeal and less white flour, stewed the spare ribs and dried beans together, and put the pancakes and leek boxes on the edge of the pot.

Afraid that everyone would not have enough to eat, Shen An Ning specially made a lot, and the entire winnowing basket was piled full.

Shen Anyu and Shen Anxuan were helping to light the fire and wash vegetables in the kitchen. The educated youth came here together. It was the first time for the male educated youth to come to Shen Anning's yard. Looking at this small yard, everyone was really envious. Although they got along well together, they still wanted to feel more comfortable in their own house.

The female educated youth took over Shen Anning's job and was responsible for cooking, while the male educated youth fetched water and chopped firewood. Everyone was busy.

Shen Anning didn't rush to cook. Several female educated youth arranged the remaining dishes clearly, including braised pork, scrambled eggs with eggplant, steamed sausage, stir-fried Chinese cabbage, sauerkraut pork stewed with vermicelli, and dried shrimp and seaweed soup.

The two tables at home were put together and placed in the outer room of the east wing for dinner. More than 20 people plus two children were sitting there. Shen Anning was worried that the female educated youth would not be able to relax, so when she went to invite the village chief and others, she specifically emphasized that the grandmother and aunt at home should be brought along.

Looking at the several plates of meat and vegetables, and the dry food piled up like a mountain, everyone was shocked, "Oh my God, An Ning, you are so generous, this is too much." Life is not easy for everyone these days, and having a full meal every day is a luxury.

Of course, Shen An Ning would not be stingy with this meal. The educated youth were one body. When any of them needed help in the future, these educated youth would definitely be the first to rush forward. Besides, how could she be stingy when inviting the village chief and others to dinner?

The meal was a lively one. Several grandmothers and aunts were very enthusiastic. Everyone talked and laughed, and had a great time. Because each dish was very large, there was some leftover, so Shen An Ning packed it up and asked Xu Hongxia to take it back. Of course, they also agreed that starting tonight they would take turns to come and help take care of their younger siblings.

In the afternoon, Shen Anning talked to the carpenter uncle about the cabinets for storing medicine and the tables, chairs and benches that would be needed. He also asked the carpenter uncle to assemble a single bed with planks and put it in the infirmary in case it would be needed in the future.

After packing up the things at home, Shen Anning packed the rations for his younger brother and sister and put them in the kitchen, leaving them a few dollars and some snacks. He looked around the house and found nothing out of the ordinary.
