Chapter 8 Preparation

After taking inventory of the supplies, I stayed inside for about three hours. When I came out and looked at the time, it was half past ten.

Since the public-private partnership of the entire industry began in 1956 and ended in 1966, the variety of goods sold in Beijing's shops today is limited, and the taste is not as good as it was a decade ago or in later times. For example, the old chefs in dim sum shops and restaurants have basically left. With public management and mechanization to improve efficiency, the taste and variety are naturally not as good as before.

Dongfeng Market, Supply and Marketing Cooperative, Department Store, and the four major department stores are currently the places where Beijingers go most frequently to shop.

I picked out a few snacks that were available in the space, including old-fashioned egg cakes, peach cakes, honey three-knife cakes, and glutinous rice strips, each weighing one pound. I wrapped them in oil paper and placed them on the table.

Shen Anning's family currently lives on the third floor, with two bedrooms and a living room. There is no independent bathroom or kitchen. They usually cook outside and have to go to the public toilet. She and her younger sister live in one room, her parents live in another, and her younger brother sleeps on the floor in the living room. Her eldest brother lived with his grandfather until he went to high school. Now his uncle is preparing to send him to the army, so he lives with his aunt and uncle.

In the past few years, their family lived in a courtyard house and went to the military compound to visit their grandparents and uncle on Sundays. Later, when Mr. Shen was dismissed from his post, grandma had foresight and rented out several courtyard houses in her home to the street and neighborhood committee for free as office space.

This is also the reason why their family was able to take back the yard easily after the reform. There were still a few boxes of treasures hidden in the courtyard, but Shen An Ning was not in a hurry to get them. Who would have thought that Grandpa Shen and Grandma Shen set the switch to open the secret room in the vegetable cellar, so that the gang could not find it even if they turned the house upside down.

Now we have people from the office helping to look after the house, and putting your treasure there is the same as putting it in a separate space, which is very safe.

It was mainly some things in the house, the table, the wardrobe. Shen An Ning found the secret compartment where his parents hid things and took away everything, including the passbook, money, and a few books that Shen's father hid under the bed. Shen An Ning conducted a carpet search and collected everything that could be used to make a fuss.

I have to say that Father Shen is also a good hider. Fortunately, Father Shen would tell her and her second brother about the things he hid, otherwise Shen Anning would not be sure that she could find all the things. There were two passbooks, one with 2,000 yuan and the other. This should be Father Shen's salary in previous years and the money left to her mother by her uncle who went abroad a few years ago. There were more than 600 yuan in scattered money, plus some tickets, food tickets, meat tickets, egg tickets, soap tickets, cloth tickets, tobacco and alcohol tickets, and oil tickets. Most of them were valid throughout the country. They should have been exchanged for Grandpa Shen's previous military supply tickets. She picked and chose, sorted out the local tickets, rolled them up and wrapped them with rubber bands, left them to her aunt, and took the ones from all over the country away. Although there were a lot of supplies in the space, it was inevitable that there would still be times when they were needed.

After packing up the things and going out, Shen Anning didn't see his younger brothers and sisters in the courtyard downstairs, so he shouted directly, "Anyu, Anxuan, come back for dinner."

After waiting for about two minutes, I saw two people running out from the alley next door. They must be playing with glass balls.

Watching the two of them climbing up the stairs, sweating profusely, Shen Anning didn't dislike it and wrung out a towel for them to wipe their sweat.

"Sister, what are we going to eat for lunch? Are we going to the state-owned restaurant?" Shen Anyu didn't see any snacks on the table, and there was nothing to eat in the pot outside the house.

It's no wonder he asked this question. Although places like Quanjude, Donglaishun, Nanyuan Beiji, Liuquanju and Lao Mo are still open, the prices are expensive. A single meal can cost an average worker half or even more of their monthly salary. State-owned restaurants are relatively cheaper and more accessible.

"Let's not go out for lunch. My sister just bought some buns and a few boxes of snacks. I'll also make you two a cup of malted milk, okay?" Shen An Ning went into the house and took out two meat buns and two vegetable buns from the space. The taste and shape were definitely different from the current ones, but the two of them were young, so they should be easy to deceive.

Shen Anyu looked at the white bread and four boxes of snacks on the table, his mouth opened in shock. This... this is too much. Although Shen's mother would buy them normally, she would never be so extravagant!

Shen An Ning ignored their surprise and said, "Okay, eat quickly. You two can take a nap after eating. You are not allowed to go out to play in the afternoon. Sister has something to do later and needs to go out for a while. You two can stay and look after the house. I will give you two cents each when you come back in the evening. Is that okay?"

"Yeah, don't worry, sister, I will take care of little brother." Shen Anxuan still has some baby fat now. When he talks and laughs, he squints his eyes and has two big dimples, which looks very cute.

"Sister knows An Xuan is the best, eat quickly."

The two little guys each ate a meat bun and left the rest of their stomachs for snacks and malted milk. Shen An Ning ate two vegetable buns and an egg cake, packed up and went out.
