Chapter 17 The Generous Adult

The other refugees, who had just been comforting Xiong Er, were even more stunned.

What's going on? When did the Xiong family produce a son-in-law who becomes an official?

Moreover, he was of a very high status; at least, they had seen him as the leader of the Tiger Gang, a big shot whom even Chen Laohu had to curry favor with.

He's standing in the middle of a group of soldiers, like a lowly henchman.

Chen Da's face was pale and bloodless as he lowered his head, wishing he could kill Chen Laohu with a single blow right now.

That bastard, he bullies the homeless and takes a little benefit from it, that's one thing.

The other soldiers, out of consideration for their relatives, didn't say anything.

I never expected to cause such a huge disaster today. Luckily, the captain didn't know that Chen Laohu was his cousin, otherwise he would probably be the first one to lose his head.

Li Chang'an looked at the captain, his face expressionless.

His gaze made the captain lower his head further and lower, his body slowly tensing up.

Li Chang'an took out five gold ingots from his pocket and placed them in front of the officers and soldiers.

"I don't like fighting and killing, and I especially dislike the evil forces that do evil and bully the people."

Li Chang'an placed the gold ingot in the captain's hand: "Come on, lend a hand, let the brothers get moving and help me catch this group of wicked thieves. Consider this gold as your reward for your hard work in eliminating evil and promoting good."

Li Chang'an's voice was not loud and his tone was calm, but all the officers and soldiers could hear the anger in it.

They could not only hear the anger in the tone of voice, but they could also see the gold glittering under the torches.

Their breathing quickened, and the air of seasoned veterans that had been about to vanished instantly.

Each of them stared intently at the gold in the captain's hand, as if they were going to war.

Five gold ingots, damn it, that's fifty taels of silver!

The monthly salary was only 800 coins, and the annual salary was just over nine taels of silver.

Sometimes the payments weren't even made, and the imperial court would delay paying the grain and salaries.

Even if the captain takes the lion's share of the fifty taels of silver, they can still get a few taels.

Now, forget about the Tiger Gang; even if their own parents stood in their way, they'd still dare to rush up and slash them a few times.

They were panting heavily, their eyes looking at the captain expectantly.

The captain looked at the gold ingot in his hand, then at the soldiers behind him who looked like wild beasts, and waved his hand.

"Did everyone hear what the adults said?"

"I heard you!"

Each of them spoke with such vigor that it made the captain's teeth ache.

Is this guy even one of his own men?

They're usually like seasoned veterans, but now they're all so damn energetic.

Normally, when catching petty thieves, they would hide in the back and dawdle, but now they all seem eager to rush into the City God Temple and arrest those troublemakers.

The captain was too lazy to boost their morale. With a wave of his hand, a group of soldiers roared and charged into the City God Temple.

Inside the temple, members of the Tiger Gang were cooking a pot of white porridge.

Chen Laohu proudly grabbed a roast chicken and took a bite.

The brothers did a great job today. Not only did they discover the good stuff that those lowly people had hidden, but each of them was also incredibly skilled.

With just a few punches and kicks, he chased away more than a dozen lowly people.

Looking at his subordinates, he felt extremely proud.

Once I've grown stronger and made the Tiger Gang bigger and more powerful, then...

Hmph, then it won't be me having to watch my cousin's face anymore, it will be my cousin watching my face.

Thinking of this, he tore off a chicken leg and ate it with his mouth full of oil.

According to the second-in-command who had been imprisoned, the prisoners' execution meal was very lavish.

This meal of mine is probably almost as good as the meal I'd beheaded.

Wait, something's not right. Why would I think that?

"Bang"

The door of the City God Temple was kicked open.

Sitting in his chair, Chen Laohu stared blankly as a group of soldiers rushed in and dragged him away.

Before he could speak, he was struck with the handle of a knife, his rotten teeth shattered into pieces.

The person who hit him was Chen Da.

He was the first to rush in, grabbed Chen Laohu, and smashed his teeth with the hilt of his knife.

Just as Chen Laohu was about to howl, his cousin swiftly chopped off his head with a single stroke.

His last thought before he died was that he had never eaten the food meant for execution.

The sound of a head hitting the ground silenced the City God Temple.

Everyone looked at Chen Da, who was covered in blood; they had initially thought it was just a matter of arresting someone.

No one expected it would result in a death.

And it was the most shocking beheading.

Several soldiers who knew the inside story couldn't help but look at Chen Da with trepidation.

They never expected that Chen would kill them to silence them.

They exchanged a glance and decided to keep this secret to themselves, never to tell anyone else.

Having learned from Chen Laohu's example, the members of the Tiger Gang offered no resistance, kneeling on the ground and enduring the soldiers' punches and kicks.

Li Chang'an stood at the entrance and waited until the City God Temple quieted down before stepping inside.

What came into view was Chen Laohu's severed head and Chen Da covered in blood.

When Xiong Er and the other villagers saw the bloody scene, they were so frightened that their legs went weak and they knelt on the ground.

"Aunt, Uncle, this...this..."

Xiong Er looked up at his son-in-law, only to see that his son-in-law's expression remained unchanged as he walked into the City God Temple without any emotion.

In his previous life, Li Chang'an was able to start from scratch and grow from a poor boy into a multi-millionaire with assets worth billions.

It doesn't rely on being law-abiding and obedient.

Even a dead person will feel nauseous at the sight of a bloody, mangled scene.
