Chapter 29 The Happy Knock

Li Chang'an didn't find it boring at all, talking as they walked.

The journey, which took several hours, was slowed down by the oxcart.

Although on the official road, oxcarts are faster than people.

However, in the mountains, especially when crossing rivers, oxcarts become a burden.

Fortunately, with Lai Fu and the servants there, Li Chang'an didn't have to carry his luggage across the river.

Around noon, when the sun was at its strongest, Li Chang'an and his group finally reached the village entrance.

The village didn't have a name yet; it was just a group of pitiful people huddling together for warmth.

There's no time to come up with a name.

There's no specific location for the village entrance; you can find it wherever you can see the houses in the village.

Lin Dongdong stood on a large rock at the entrance of the village, tiptoeing and looking into the distance.

My very capable brother-in-law has been gone for five days.

Uncle Xiong and the others are back, and they brought back a lot of things.

She said it was her brother-in-law who bought it, and she excitedly told them how amazing her brother-in-law was.

With just a few words, he wiped out the most ruthless gang in the city—a gang of more than twenty strong men—and my brother-in-law didn't take them seriously at all.

With a wave of his hand, he arrested them.

Moreover, the gang's biggest villain was cleaved in two by one of his brother-in-law's men; it was terrifying.

Moreover, many high-ranking officials were on friendly terms with their brother-in-law, but only one fat guy had a fight with his brother-in-law.

However, the fat man who was beaten to death was the highest-ranking official in Lingnan. His son had a good relationship with his brother-in-law, so he beat the fat man to death on behalf of his brother-in-law.

Moreover, the official's son even treated them to a meal.

Xiong Er always boasts about it.

Speaking of the food in the homes of officials, it was a table full of dishes.

The table is bigger than the house my brother-in-law built.

There were even more dishes, mostly meat and fish, so many that they couldn't all fit on the table and had to be served in several batches.

They couldn't finish it all, what a waste!

The villagers felt as if they were listening to gibberish after hearing what Xiong Er said.

Someone asked the official at the city gate if he knew any officials who were more powerful than his son-in-law.

Xiong Er scoffed and said that even the most powerful official at the city gate wouldn't dare to speak in front of his son-in-law.

He does whatever his son-in-law tells him to do.

When we entered the city, no one dared to stop us.

Finally, a soldier stopped them. When he saw the sign for the son-in-law, he looked like he had seen a ghost and knelt down and kowtowed.

Guo Dajiao didn't believe it when she heard this, but she only believed it after hearing all the villagers who went out with Li Chang'an say the same thing.

However, seeing that Li Chang'an hadn't returned in the past few days, she started causing trouble.

They're spreading rumors that the Lin family's son-in-law is living a life of luxury at the official's house and isn't coming back to the village.

When Li Chang'an said she didn't want Lin Dongdong and the others anymore, Lin Dongdong was so angry that she gritted her teeth and was about to hit her.

Xiong Er and the others were also a little worried, after all, the official's family was so well-off, and there were people to serve them.

Any one of the maids inside is prettier than Daya.

If it were them, they wouldn't want to go back to the remote mountain village to suffer again.

Upon hearing Guo Dajiao's words, the villagers also began to have doubts.

The son-in-law probably doesn't really intend to come back, which is why he sent them back with their belongings.

The longer it went on, the more rumors circulated in the village, with many people gossiping behind people's backs.

They said the son-in-law was living a good life in the city and didn't want the three girls from the Lin family anymore.

Lin Dongdong would be very angry if she heard this, so she would wait at the village entrance every day.

I waited from day to night, hoping my brother-in-law would come back soon.

I'll beat them up when I get back.

I waited and waited, and three days passed.

Last night, she also saw her sister secretly crying under the covers.

She knew that her sister also missed her brother-in-law.

Lin Dongdong has always liked her brother-in-law very much. With her brother-in-law around, no one in the village dares to bully her family.

Moreover, all the children in the village were eager to play with her.

If my brother-in-law is gone, the house will go back to how it was before.

She didn't want those pretty fabrics, nor did she want that flesh; she just wanted her brother-in-law to come back.

Lin Dongdong kicked the small stones in disappointment, tears falling to the ground drop by drop.

She misses her brother-in-law.

"Moo~"

A cow's moo made Lin Dongdong raise her head, her eyes blurry with tears.

Strange, why are there cows mooing in the village?

In the hazy distance, an oxcart came from afar, driven by a neatly dressed old man.

Lin Dongdong was wondering why anyone would come to their village.

The young man in white sitting on the oxcart stood up and waved to her.

"Brother-in-law!"

Lin Dongdong shouted and jumped up, her small figure running towards the oxcart, not even bothering to look at the road beneath her feet.

Li Chang'an looked at Dongdong and ran and shouted, quickly stopping the oxcart.

He released Su Xiao from his arms, jumped off the oxcart, and went to meet her.

"Waaaaah, brother-in-law, brother-in-law, brother-in-law!"

Lin Dongdong hugged Li Chang'an tightly and burst into tears, wiping them everywhere with her little hands.

"Sister...Sister...Brother-in-law, you...you...you don't want us anymore, do you?" Lin Dongdong cried so hard she could barely speak, clinging to her brother-in-law and refusing to let go.

She was afraid that if she let go, her brother-in-law would disappear.

"How could that be?" Li Chang'an comforted him, "You are a clever and brave little girl, how could your brother-in-law not want you?"

“They said that my brother-in-law is living a good life in the city and doesn’t want us anymore,” Lin Dongdong replied, crying.

Seeing so many people watching her cry, she felt a little embarrassed and buried her head in her brother-in-law's arms, her little hands tightly wrapped around his neck.
