Chapter 1 Prologue
The sun in August is so hot that the temperature of the ground is almost enough to fry an egg.
Wen Yan was getting out of a taxi wearing 8cm high heels. She had just met a client and had tried her best to convince the client to sign the deal but failed. Just as she was sending the client away in frustration, she was called back to the company by a colleague.
As soon as she entered the company, she saw a colleague she had a good relationship with give her a cautious look and secretly point to the manager's office. She knew it was that old witch again, looking for trouble. Reluctantly, she put down her things, took a deep breath, and knocked on the door.
"Manager, you're looking for me"
The middle-aged woman sitting behind the computer looked at the woman standing in front of her. Although she was already 30 years old, she still looked very good. She couldn't help but twist her already wrinkled face. "What were you doing just now? You didn't work properly all day. It's been an hour and I just saw you. What? I need to make an appointment to see you? You don't get many clients every day, but you just run around during work hours. Do you pay your salary to hang out during work hours?"
"Manager, a client just said she wanted to have a meeting with me and asked me to go find her, so I went out. I don't run around during working hours." Wen Yan knew that this old woman disliked him and was looking for an opportunity to trip him up.
"So, has your client signed it?"
Hearing this, Wen Yan tightened her grip again. "No." She knew that this woman would start to abuse her again. She was used to it. Because of her appearance, she always disliked her and would insult her whenever she got the chance.
As expected, when the woman heard this, she stood up and pointed at Wen Yan's nose and said, "If you don't get the client, it means you are not capable enough. You are still making excuses. Have you been absent from work for so long and deliberately not coming back? I know it. You are so restless every day. You said you were going to meet the client. Why don't you find me a client? If you can't get the client, it means you are not capable enough. I don't know why the company keeps useless people like you all day long. You can't get any results."
After hearing the woman opposite cursing for half an hour, she was probably satisfied. She waved her hand, looked at the disgusting face in front of her, and said to Wen Yan, "You'll be absent from work for a day. Get out. Next time you can't find anyone, you'll be a jerk."
Hearing this, Wen Yan returned to his seat with a numb face, sitting quietly without saying a word. What else could he do? He had to rely on this job to make a living. He lived one day at a time. At 30, he was no longer at the age to be willful.
After finally getting off work, it began to rain. She hadn't brought an umbrella with her, and reluctant to spend money on a taxi, she braved the rain to wait for the bus. She finally managed to squeeze onto the crowded carriage, but the unpleasant odor nearly suffocated her. She arrived at the station, a kilometer away from the apartment she'd rented in the urban village to save money, so she had to walk back. Walking down the street, with no shelter overhead, in the pouring rain, pedestrians hurried by, umbrellas in hand. Everyone went about their own business, with no time to stop and pay attention to a stranger. Even though the stranger looked miserable in the rain, the adult world was always indifferent.
Wen Yan walked in the rain, watching the people coming and going, but no one stopped for her. When she grew up, her biggest wish wasn't wealth and fame, but the simplest: someone to hold an umbrella for her in the rain, a hot meal for her when she returned home, and a light on when she was tired late at night. By the age of 30, she had no car, no house, and no savings.
My parents' relationship was strained early in life. The day before the Gaokao, my father and mother got into a drunken fight, leaving them up all night. This resulted in my failing the Gaokao and my admission to a mediocre second-tier university. Later, my father's gambling addiction forced my mother to borrow heavily to pay off his debts, leaving her deeply in debt. Due to my family's financial situation, while my classmates were enjoying their college years, I was working as a waiter in a restaurant. While my roommates were discussing the latest lipstick shades, I was commuting to my part-time job in washed-out jeans. Gradually, my academic performance became mediocre due to my numerous distractions.
With a mediocre family background and a mediocre education, I toiled until the age of 28, finally paying off my family's debts. Because of my family's financial situation, I dared not aspire for things that didn't belong to me. My debts meant I couldn't live the life of a typical college student. By the time I turned 30, I had neither the time nor the money for a romantic relationship, leaving me a virgin at 30. My friends told me I was wasting my time with such a beautiful face.
I feel like I've lived a very tiring life.
After returning to the rental house, he was too lazy to pick up the pile of dirty clothes. His body was exhausted after being caught in the rain, so he quickly washed himself and fell into a deep sleep on the bed. Tomorrow is another day of working to make a living, Wen Yan's last thought before he fell asleep.
