Chapter 157 Making a Wish

The town mayor returned to his office with the abbot's case files.

He told his secretary, "Go to the town health center and call Dr. Zhang from the surgery department."

The secretary asked, "Mayor, are you feeling unwell?"

The town mayor frowned and said, "I twisted my back while working in the countryside a couple of days ago, and it hurt for most of last night."

The secretary jogged to the town health center and said to Dr. Zhang in the surgery department, "Please go to the town government right away. The mayor twisted his back and specifically asked you to take a look at him."

Dr. Zhang is just over thirty years old and has only been out of school for a few years. He is considered a junior at the town's health center.

He was flattered to hear that the town mayor had personally requested him to see a doctor.

He followed his secretary to the town government, and as soon as he entered the mayor's office, he bowed and scraped and said, "Mayor, I heard you sprained your back. Let me take a look at it."

The town mayor said, "Dr. Zhang, please close the door."

The mayor gestured to the sofa and said politely, "Please sit down."

"Mayor, let me examine you first."

"No rush, I have something more important to discuss with you."

Dr. Zhang sat down, puzzled.

Mayor Gu Le took out the abbot's case file from the drawer, pulled out the medical certificate, and handed it to Doctor Zhang.

"Did you issue this certificate?"

Dr. Zhang glanced at it, nodded, and said ingratiatingly, "Mayor, it's like this, I happened to be on duty at the outpatient clinic that day, and your wife brought Erlv here, asking me to examine her."

"Oh, Dr. Zhang, has anyone asked you about this?"

Dr. Zhang shook his head repeatedly, denying it, saying, "Mayor, how could I dare to tell anyone about this? No one has asked about it either."

Dr. Zhang suddenly remembered that Zhang Mengmeng, the young widow at the Baixing Restaurant, had asked about this matter before, and he had brushed it off at the time.

He was about to tell the town mayor about it, but then he thought it was better to avoid trouble.

Besides, the young widow was his matchmaker; he couldn't possibly betray his benefactor.

"Dr. Zhang, you must not tell anyone about this injury certificate. If anyone asks, just say: You did examine him at the time, but due to limited medical skills, there was a possibility of misdiagnosis."

Dr. Zhang nodded repeatedly and quickly said, "Yes, it was a misdiagnosis. My medical skills are limited. At the time, the patient was complaining of chest pain. I touched it and felt something was wrong with the ribs, so I made the diagnosis that two ribs were broken."

The mayor smiled with satisfaction and praised, "Dr. Zhang, I heard you've done a good job. Last time, your hospital director said he wanted to create a position for head of surgery, but because there are only two doctors in surgery, it was put on hold for the time being. When the time is right, I will suggest to the director that you be promoted to head of surgery."

Dr. Zhang quickly stood up, bowed to the mayor, and said with tears of gratitude, "Mayor, thank you for your appreciation. I will work hard and live up to your expectations."

"Dr. Zhang, as a doctor, in addition to improving your medical skills, you must also establish the medical ethics of treating and saving lives. Of course, more importantly, you must keep your mouth shut. Say what you should say, and never say what you shouldn't say. This is the most important thing."

"Mayor, I understand. I will keep your teachings in mind and will not say a single word that should not be said."

The town mayor stood up, walked over to Dr. Zhang, patted him on the shoulder, and said, "Some people are like flies; they'll target eggs without cracks. Be wary of these kinds of people."

"Yes, I am like an egg without cracks. No matter how many flies fly around me, I will not let them land on me."

"Haha...Very good. Based on today's assessment, I think you are fully capable of taking on the role of head of surgery. Perhaps, it won't be long before you shoulder this responsibility."

"Thank you for your guidance, Mayor."

Dr. Zhang left happily.

Gu Le frowned, deep in thought: Who exactly is targeting the abbot's case?

Obviously, it must be Deputy Mayor Chang Xiaobao. He lives in the hospital, and perhaps he was also at the surgical clinic when Erlv went for his medical examination that day.

He saw that scene, felt something was amiss, and so he began to keep an eye on it.

Gu Le muttered to himself, "Chang Xiaobao, you think you can take me down and make me the mayor just because you're a few years younger and have a master's degree? Don't even think about it!"

Early this morning, Ma Yunfei put on a baseball cap and a mask and went to the alley opposite the police station.

He speculated that the mayor, having received an anonymous letter last night, would definitely take action.

The mayor's first action was to go to the police station, retrieve the case files, and then destroy them.

At the same time, the mayor will close the case immediately, meaning he will order the abbot's release.

Ma Yunfei's prediction was completely correct.

He saw Gu Le hurriedly enter the police station, and less than ten minutes later, the abbot was released.

Ma Yunfei waved at the alley entrance and called out, "Abbot, come here."

The abbot glanced at Ma Yunfei with a puzzled look, hesitated for a moment, and then slowly walked over.

The abbot only recognized Ma Yunfei when he got close enough to him.

"Boss, it's you! How did you know I'd be released?"

"Haha... I'm a genius! I figured out you'd be released today, so I came all this way to greet you."

The abbot sighed and said, “Boss, last night, the policeman guarding me said: ‘You might be taken to the county public security bureau tomorrow, and you’ll probably get at least a year or two in prison.’ This policeman also said: ‘You’re really ruthless, you broke two of Erlu’s ribs.’ Boss, I just don’t understand. I only punched Erlu in the face and slapped him twice. How could I have broken two of his ribs? It’s really strange.”

Ma Yunfei didn't want the abbot to know the inside story; knowing too much would be counterproductive.

"Abbot, say no more. You must learn from this lesson and never provoke Erlv again. His uncle is the town mayor. The town mayor has power and can decide your life or death."

"Boss, is Erlv trying to frame me by deliberately saying that his ribs were broken so that I can be sentenced?"

"Abbot, now that you've been released, don't overthink it. Come on, I'll take you to the Baixing Restaurant for a nice meal, then we'll take a bath and go home to rest for a couple of days."

"Boss, I've only been given two meals a day in the detention cell these past two days. I'm starving."

Ma Yunfei took the abbot to the Baixing Restaurant.

Upon seeing the abbot, the young widow exclaimed joyfully, "Ah! You've been released so quickly! What wonderful news! Young man, how did you manage to get the abbot out?"

"Sister Meng, don't say anything, quickly cook a few dishes so the abbot can fill his stomach."

The young widow cooked four dishes herself and served two large bowls of rice.

The abbot wolfed down his food, finishing all four dishes and two bowls of rice in less than twenty minutes.

He wiped his mouth and said with satisfaction, "Boss, I've eaten and drunk my fill. I have to go back to the sales station right away. They can't do without me."
