Chapter 15 Seafood from Hell

The small wooden boat slowly returned to its previous fishing spot, not far from the isolated island.

There are many uninhabited islands of varying sizes around Baishi Island. Some are purely composed of reefs, and the beach is never exposed no matter how low the tide goes. Others have their beaches exposed as soon as the tide goes out, and still others have their beaches visible even at high tide.

Feng Ye rowed the small wooden boat around the island, then chose a rock that was relatively easy to get ashore and leaned against it.

Everyone jumped off the boat with their tools and tied it to the rocks.

"Holy crap, there's a ton of stuff on these rocks."

"Holy crap, so many!"

"Ah Ye was right, there really is quite a lot of goods on the deserted island."

Feng Ye laughed and said, "This is an isolated island, no one has ever been here, of course it's overgrown with weeds."

Everywhere you look, there are densely packed mussels, clams, oysters, and various snails attached to them.

Everyone was excited to see so much seafood.

Feng Ye was also overjoyed.

These days, resources are really plentiful.

In a few years, when outboard motors become more common, fishermen will gradually venture to remote islands, and there will never be so much cargo left.

"It's lunchtime, would you like to grab something to eat before we get back to work?"

While catching silver pomfret, we also pulled up some miscellaneous fish, shrimp, and crabs, which we left on the boat without selling. Now we can have them for lunch.

Moreover, the tide has only just begun to recede, so there is plenty of time.

"Why bother eating? It's a waste of time."

"With so much cargo, why bother eating? If we're really hungry, we can just eat dry rations. It's not like we didn't bring any."

"Stop eating, get back to work."

Ah-Can and the Xiao brothers muttered to themselves, then scattered with their tools, each finding a patch of shellfish and starting to dig.

"Ah Ye, the pot and salt are here. You can eat by yourself. I'm going to dig some too."

Feng Xuan took a pot out of the basket he had brought and placed it on the reef. Then he ran towards a reef covered with shellfish.

"You guys are really..."

Feng Ye was speechless.

He's all alone, what good food could he possibly have? He should just get back to work.

Carrying a bucket and tools, he randomly picked a rock and began searching for the goods he wanted.

As for the oysters, mussels, and clams that are everywhere and are neither valuable nor difficult to dig up, let's hold off on them for now and look for other things first.

Upon approaching, Feng Ye immediately spotted a large oyster shell eating oysters, and readily accepted it.

He then discovered a large patch of snails, all sizes clustered together.

Luckily, he doesn't have trypophobia, otherwise his scalp would tingle.

There are too many to choose from, so I'll just take them all, regardless of size.

Simply place the bucket underneath to catch them, and with one hand sweeping across the top, the snails fall into the bucket one by one, with quite a few even falling into the water.

After happily harvesting the spicy snails, we moved to a new spot and discovered a large cluster of Buddha's Hand snails in a crevice between two rocks.

The scientific name for the goose barnacle is *Gnaphalium affine*, and it also has a whole host of other names, such as stone goose barnacle, dog claw goose barnacle, tortoise foot, cockscomb shell, and Guanyin palm.

This thing is hard to dig up, but it's worth some money.

Feng Ye carefully dug it out and was about to put it in the bucket when he glanced at it and was immediately shocked.

This is not a Buddha's Hand snail, it's a goose barnacle.

Goose barnacles are a familiar name, but their real name is actually Myoga.

It is called goose barnacle because it has a long, slender stem that resembles a swan's neck.

In later generations, goose barnacles became one of the most expensive seafoods in the world, and were especially favored by Western countries.

Because they live in the crevices of islands and reefs where ocean currents are frequent, harvesting them is extremely difficult, hence the name "seafood from hell."

Buddha's hand snail and goose barnacle look very similar, but they are not the same thing, although they both belong to the Spathaceae family.

To distinguish them, first look at the color: bergamot snails are pale yellow and green, while goose barnacles are purplish-brown; secondly, look at the stem: bergamot snails also have stems, but they are very short.

If you look closely, it's actually quite easy to distinguish between barnacles and goose barnacles.

Now that he's seen it, we can't let it go.

Even if it's not worth much in this day and age, it's good to keep it for yourself.

These things grow in the crevices of the reefs and are not easy to dig out. Feng Ye had to put in a lot of effort to dig out this large area.

After he finished digging up this large area, he wasn't in a hurry to dig for anything else; he focused on finding goose barnacles to dig for.

Whenever he saw clusters of shellfish on a reef, he would dig some off to distinguish them.

To avoid getting them mixed up, he simply stops digging for goose barnacles; he only digs for goose barnacles, otherwise, if they're all mixed together, it'll be a nightmare to pick them out.

He searched the surrounding rocks but only managed to dig up three or four kilograms in total.

While searching, he bumped into Feng Xuan.

I glanced at the bucket in my brother's hand; it had everything, you could say he took whatever came his way. He probably just dug up whatever he could find without picking and choosing. It was almost full.

In addition, there was a basket not far away, which was almost full as well.

Feng Xuan straightened up and rubbed his back: "What are you looking for? I've seen you wandering around here."

"this."

Feng Ye pointed to the goose barnacles in his bucket.

"Isn't this a bergamot snail? Aren't they everywhere here? Why do we need to look for it?"

"Brother, this isn't a Buddha's Hand snail, it's a goose barnacle."

"What the heck? Isn't this just a Buddha's Hand snail? Why is it also called a goose barnacle?"

"Look, is there a difference?"

Feng Ye took a goose barnacle from the bucket and a Buddha's hand snail from his brother's bucket, and put them together.

"There are indeed some differences; the colors are slightly different, and the stems are also different in length."

"Hehe, this stuff is much more expensive than Buddha's Hand snails."

How expensive?

"I know it's expensive, but I don't know exactly how expensive."

Feng Ye spread his hands.

Feng Xuan said thoughtfully, "If it's really like you say, I estimate that nobody on the island would recognize it, and it wouldn't fetch a good price."

Feng Ye nodded: "So I plan to go to the county tomorrow to take a look. Only those big hotels are likely to recognize its value."

"When I get back, I'll look for it too. If I find it, we'll go together tomorrow."

"Let's talk about it tomorrow," Feng Ye replied. "Brother, don't dig up the worthless stuff yet, let's find the valuable stuff first."

"At first I was too excited and wanted to put everything I saw into the bucket. Now I only pick up things that can be sold for money."

"Brother, take your time picking them up. I'll take these to the boat first, so they don't get mixed up with the basil later."

"good."

Feng Xuan responded and bent down again to dig up a clump of Buddha's Hand snails in front of him.
