"The main hall, right? Let me look for it."
Feng Ye nodded and turned to go to the main room.
He found a homemade, old-fashioned net without much effort.
Although it's a bit rusty, it still looks usable.
He took the net and a bucket and went back to the riverbank.
He had just rolled up his trouser legs, but after thinking about it, he let them down again and simply took them off and put them on the shore.
Since they're already married, they're thick-skinned and not afraid of being seen.
Submerge the landing net in the water, then tiptoe closer to the swimming fish.
Try not to make a big commotion so as not to disturb the fish.
Feng Ye held his breath, intently waiting for the perfect moment.
"Splash!"
He suddenly scooped up a handful of small, lively fish in the net.
"Not bad, it's a good start."
Feng Ye smiled with satisfaction, poured some water into the bucket, and then poured the small fish from the net into it.
"Keep going, keep going."
He continued his great work of catching small fish with great enthusiasm.
They cast their nets several more times, each time catching something, more or less, without ever coming away empty-handed.
He was quite pleased with himself and was about to continue fishing when he suddenly noticed something move in the grass by the river.
What made that noise? A snake, or a big fish?
Feng Ye remained vigilant and cautiously approached.
As we got closer, we realized it was a large turtle hiding in the grass.
"This is... a soft-shelled turtle?"
Feng Ye was a little unsure.
He had never actually seen a live turtle in real life; all he had seen were chopped into pieces and cooked into dishes.
He guessed based solely on the fact that the object had no patterns on its back and had a skirt-like hem.
As far as he knew, among all turtles and tortoises, it seemed that only soft-shelled turtles were like this.
"Wow, what great luck! I actually ran into a turtle."
Feng Ye was immediately excited and was about to grab it, but he seemed to have frightened it.
The turtle cautiously stretched its neck, looked around, and then crawled into the water.
Now that he's discovered it, how could it possibly escape?
Feng Ye took three steps at a time, quickly stepped forward, scooped it up with his hand, and it became his prize.
"You little punk, trying to run away!"
Feng Ye happily grabbed it in his hand.
The weight is not bad, it's about three pounds.
But this turtle was very fierce. It flailed its limbs, twisted its head, and desperately stretched its neck backward, trying to bite and grab its hand.
Although he had no experience catching turtles, he had seen related videos in his previous life and knew the turtles' weaknesses.
There is a depression at the junction of the turtle's two hind legs and its abdomen. If you hold it with your thumb and forefinger, you can avoid being bitten by the turtle.
The turtle's head is blocked by its own shell, creating a blind spot at the back.
Therefore, no matter how hard the turtle tries, it's all in vain.
"You still want to bite me? Dream on."
Seeing the turtle still doing useless work and trying hard to bite him, Feng Ye gave it a hard shove before putting it in the bucket.
I searched along the grass by the river, but unfortunately I couldn't find a second one.
He couldn't help but chuckle, realizing he had been a bit greedy.
It's lucky if you can catch even one.
After calming himself down, he threw himself back into his great task of catching small fish.
Time slipped by unnoticed, and the setting sun began to slowly sink, gilding the river with a golden glow.
Feng Ye's bucket was already full of small fish, a hundred or two.
He looked at his spoils with satisfaction and decided to call it a day.
There's enough of this.
Back at his mother-in-law's house, Gao Lianxiang was busy preparing dinner in the kitchen. Seeing Feng Ye return, she smiled and asked, "How much did you catch? You didn't come back with an empty bucket, did you?"
"Once I take action, it's almost impossible for me to go home empty-handed."
Feng Ye smiled smugly, placed the bucket on the ground, and showed it to his mother-in-law: "Look, isn't this a full bucket?"
Looking at the lively little fish in the bucket, Gao Lianxiang smiled and said, "Wow, there are quite a few, and there's even a turtle. You're so lucky."
"I just happened to run into it, so I caught it and brought it back."
"The soft-shelled turtle is used to stew chicken, and the small whitebait is to be deep-fried, right? Then we need to process it and remove the internal organs."
"I'll do it; I'm good at killing fish."
Feng Ye found a cleaver and cutting board in the kitchen and started working right by the door, skillfully gutting and removing the internal organs from the small fish one by one.
As for the turtle, he didn't know how to kill it, so he had to leave it to his mother-in-law to take care of.
Even though he was fast at killing fish, it still took him a while to kill one or two whitebait.
By the time he finished killing, it was already dark, and Gao Lianxiang had finished preparing dinner.
These small fish can only be fried after dinner.
The turtle hasn't been killed yet; there's too much time, and it won't be tender enough to stew properly. We'll have to save it for tomorrow morning.
It was still early after we finished eating, only a little past seven.
Before I could even finish a cigarette, a bunch of neighbors from the left and right came over to watch TV at my father-in-law's house.
He took out a pack of cigarettes and offered them around, then chatted with them about the harvest in the fields, and also talked about life by the sea...
The neighbors were generous with their praise, saying that Ye Qingling had found a good husband and was living a good life...
They saw the couple bringing lots of things over and over again during the Dragon Boat Festival and this Mid-Autumn Festival.
