As soon as Ah-Can walked in, he kicked the man who was lying down wrapped in a blanket.
He said with a fierce look, "Wake up, get up, my brother has something to ask you."
The man cried out in pain. Although he was very unwilling, he struggled to sit up in order to avoid being beaten again.
Feng Ye composed himself outside, trying to appear friendly, before going inside.
He walked up to the man, squatted down, and said in a calm tone, "You don't need to be too afraid. As long as you answer my questions truthfully, we will let you go."
The man looked at Feng Ye with a hint of doubt and fear in his eyes, but still nodded.
Feng Ye began by asking, "Are you from Longtail Island?"
"Um."
"What's your name?"
"Zheng Haoren".
"Damn it, you're a robber, how can you call yourself a good person?"
Ah-Can slapped him across the face.
Feng Ye was speechless upon hearing the name.
Even though I know they are homophones, it's still quite ironic that it appears in the name of someone who is used to robbery and plunder.
"No, brother, you misheard. My surname is Zheng. Hao is the 'hero' in 'heroic hero,' and Ren is the 'benevolence' in 'righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness.'"
"That won't work either. You're not a good person, so you can't use that name."
Ah-Can slapped him again.
"My parents gave me this name, I can't do anything about it."
Zheng Haoren defended himself, feeling wronged.
"Alright, stop hitting him. Let him yell whatever he wants."
Feng Ye waved his hand and then continued to ask, "I won't beat around the bush with you. I'm just curious what you're doing on that island after all this trouble?"
"No...it's nothing."
Zheng Haoren's eyes flickered, and he stammered his answer.
"Damn, you want to get beaten up again, don't you?"
Ah-Can glared at him and was ready to make a move.
Feng Ye raised his hand to stop him and continued, "My brother has a bad temper and is quite irritable. When he goes crazy, even I can't stop him. So, I advise you to tell the truth honestly and avoid suffering more."
"We just... just went to the island to fish and collect some bird eggs."
Zheng Haoren stammered, still refusing to tell the truth.
"Brother, you're still not being honest."
Feng Ye shook his head. "Why come all this way here when we can fish at sea and collect bird eggs anywhere else?"
"Brother, I think we should just forget about it. We won't get anything out of him anyway. Judging from his expression, he definitely won't tell the truth."
Ah-Can pretended to be impatient and interrupted, "Only you are so curious, keeping him around asking questions. If it were me, I would have thrown him into the sea to feed the fish long ago."
"Calm down first, don't be so impatient."
Feng Ye patted A-Can on the shoulder, then turned to Zheng Haoren and said, "If you don't tell the truth, I can't guarantee what my brother might do."
Zheng Haoren glanced at A-Can fearfully, swallowed hard, and asked, "You...you really will let me go?"
"Of course, as long as you cooperate obediently and tell us everything we want to know, we will absolutely keep our promise."
Feng Ye nodded, his tone carrying an undeniable firmness.
It is definitely necessary to release it, but the way to release it requires some thought.
He felt that handing him over to the police should be considered releasing him, right?
Besides, there's no need to be trustworthy with someone who's utterly wicked.
Zheng Haoren took a deep breath, seemingly struggling internally.
After a moment, he finally spoke: "Okay, I'll tell you. We're going to the island to search for treasure."
"Treasure hunting?"
Although Feng Ye and A-Can had suspected it beforehand, they were still surprised to hear Zheng Haoren admit it himself.
Damn, I guessed right! There really is treasure on the island.
Feng Ye raised an eyebrow and continued to press, "How did you know there was treasure on the island?"
Zheng Haoren hesitated for a moment, then explained, "There's a nursery rhyme that's been passed down on our island for a long time..."
"Is it that story about the wicked heading southeast, where treasures are hidden on islands?"
"You all knew about this too?"
Ah Can curled his lip: "It's not that rare, it's already spread throughout the surrounding villages."
Feng Ye asked with a hint of sarcasm, "This nursery rhyme has been around for so long, why are you only now thinking of going treasure hunting?"
"I've tried looking for it before, but I haven't found it."
"So what's going on now? How did we get sure it was on that island?"
Zheng Haoren sighed and slowly said, "When we were repairing the ancestral graves some time ago, we accidentally found a wooden box with a treasure map inside, which marked the location of the treasure."
"Is the treasure located on that island?" Feng Ye pressed.
Zheng Haoren nodded and continued, "Yes, that map clearly marks the distance between Long Tail Island and the treasure's location, as well as the exact location where the treasure is buried."
"After discussing it, my brothers and I thought it was a good idea, so we decided to follow the instructions on the map to find it."
"After all, who wouldn't want to get rich overnight?"
In the end, greed gleamed in his eyes.
"Have you found the exact location?"
“We found it a few days ago, but it was blocked by a big rock and we couldn’t get in. And the wind has been too strong these days, so we didn’t dare to go out to sea. We only brought the tools and explosives here today to blast the big rock open.”
"You guys are really daring. Aren't you afraid that if this explosive goes off, it will attract all the fishermen who are fishing nearby?"
The sea was open and unobstructed, and the sound of the explosives could travel an unknown distance.
"We were scared, so we brought blankets with us to spend the night on the boat. During the day, we would prepare the explosives and put them in. Then, when all the fishing boats had gone home at night, we would light the fire. That way, we wouldn't have to worry about anyone hearing us."
