At three in the morning, the alarm clock rang.
Feng Ye then opened his eyes, got up, and went out to sea.
Today we have 30 gillnets and 50 shrimp traps to collect, so we won't be using trawl nets.
Once we reach the operating area, we locate the netting buoy, hook it up, and begin hauling in the net.
Because the weather is still too cold, most of the fish have not yet migrated, and the catch from the gillnets is mainly toadfish and mullet.
By the time we finished collecting all 30 nets, it was already past noon.
They planned to put down the 30 shrimp traps they brought out today, and then go collect the shrimp traps.
However, just as he moved the net out of the cabin, a gust of wind blew in his face, and Feng Ye felt as if raindrops were mixed in with it.
Is it raining?
He raised his head and looked up at the sky.
The clouds in the sky were murky and gloomy.
It really did rain.
It was just a light drizzle, barely perceptible to the naked eye, but you could clearly feel the raindrops falling on your face.
"Brother Ye, what are you looking at?"
Ah-chan came out of the cabin, holding a fishing net in his hands, and asked curiously.
Feng Ye pointed to the sky: "It's raining."
"Huh? No way?"
Ah-chan looked up at the sky and indeed noticed the rain falling.
"That's true, but the rain isn't heavy, so it won't affect our net-hauling."
"But we can't put the fishing net down, who knows if it will get bigger, or how long it will rain?"
It is said that spring rain is as precious as oil, but that is for farmers who rely on the land for their livelihood.
But for fishermen, spring rain is their nemesis, something they find annoying.
Because once the spring rains arrive, it means we have to rest, we can't go out to sea, and there's no income.
The spring rains are incessant, often lasting for ten days to half a month at a time, and no one can be sure when they will stop.
"Let's go and collect the shrimp traps first, and then decide whether to set up the nets based on the situation."
When operating at sea, the weather is the biggest variable.
The two put the net back in the cabin and sailed to the place where the shrimp traps were placed.
Once the buoys were located, a series of net-hauling operations were performed, and shrimp traps were pulled up from the sea one after another.
The shrimp traps occasionally contain a few large shrimp, but mostly small shrimp and some cheap seafood.
"Not much luck today, the catches I caught weren't very good."
Ah-Can complained as he sorted through the shrimp traps.
"Don't worry, we've only collected a few cages so far, there's still a lot more to come."
This situation was within Feng Ye's expectations, and he was not too disappointed.
The next shrimp trap was pulled onto the boat, only to find two long pieces of seafood inside.
He initially thought it was a conger eel, but upon closer inspection, he discovered it was a moray eel.
While moray eels and conger eels share some similarities in appearance, they also have distinct differences.
Moray eels have long, pointed heads and oval eyes, and their bodies are slender and scaleless.
Its dorsal fin, anal fin, and caudal fin are connected together, looking like an elegant ribbon.
In contrast, moray eels resemble snakes more and are fierce marine creatures that will attack people when disturbed.
Its head is small, its mouth protrudes forward, and its mouth is full of sharp teeth, so big that it can't close its mouth.
Surprisingly, its teeth are located on two pairs of jaws, one pair in the mouth and the other in the throat.
Its skin is thick and without scales, covered with a layer of reddish patterns that look like makeup.
Its chestnut spots, scattered spots, and stripes sometimes form bizarre patterns.
There are many species of moray eels, with about 120 species inhabiting various seas around the world.
The shrimp traps they caught contained a type of naked eel called the reticulated naked eel. The reticulated naked eel gets its name from the fact that it lacks pectoral fins and has 15-22 greenish-brown horizontal stripes running from its head to its tail.
These two eels are quite large, about a meter long and as thick as an adult's arm.
They are especially fierce, with their mouths wide open, darting around inside the shrimp traps and attacking each other.
There were no other shrimp in the trap; they probably ate them all.
"Ah Chan, didn't you say the goods weren't very good? Well, here comes the good stuff."
Feng Ye poured them into an empty basket.
"Wow, those are two huge moray eels."
Ah-Can exclaimed with delight, "I'll go find the clips and fill a bucket with seawater, then put them in!"
"Let me collect a few more."
Feng Ye put the shrimp trap aside and moved on to the next one.
Unexpectedly, the cage overflowed with four eels.
They come in various sizes; the largest is estimated to be 1.12 meters tall, while the smallest is only 60-70 centimeters.
But each one was incredibly fierce and extremely aggressive; when he poured them out, he almost got his finger bitten.
Fortunately, he reacted quickly and pulled his hand back in time.
After dumping everything into the basket, he left it to Ah-Can to handle while he continued collecting the shrimp traps.
However, before one shrimp trap could be retrieved, Ah-Can exclaimed, "Holy crap, they're killing each other!"
He turned his head and saw that the largest moray eel had actually bitten a smaller one and was tearing off a piece of flesh with its sharp teeth and eating it.
The smaller one wasn't going to back down either, and it bit the larger one in the back.
Meanwhile, two other moray eels seized the opportunity and rushed forward to bite.
The scene quickly descended into chaos.
"Damn, that's too brutal."
Feng Ye was dumbfounded.
Ah-Can had the same feeling, so he quickly picked them up and separated them, putting them into two buckets according to their size.
However, when they tried to grab the largest one, it struggled violently and they lost their grip, causing it to fall onto the boat.
As soon as the giant eel was freed, it twisted its body and fled, swimming right up to Feng Ye's feet.
