Chapter 56 Catching a Baby Dolphin

The two brothers fished until noon and had a pretty good catch.

Although no more valuable fish species such as grouper have been caught, the number is still quite considerable.

They set out to sea early in the morning and had been busy all morning. By now, Feng Ye was a little hungry.

They had planned to stay at sea all day, so they brought food, but it was already cold.

These days, people who drift in coastal waters either go hungry or eat cold food at mealtimes; no one brings pots and pans on their boats.

Unless it's a fishing boat that's out at sea for several days or longer, they won't cook simple meals on board.

Feng Ye took out an aluminum lunchbox and opened it. Inside were cold dishes. He picked up a spoon and was about to start eating when he saw Feng Xuan pull up a greedy big fish.

"Blue spots?"

There were several meters between the two small wooden boats, so they weren't very clear.

"The reddish-brown spots are definitely bluish spots, but they are a bit small."

Feng Xuan nodded, and said with a hint of regret.

There are three types of grouper called "blue-spotted" grouper, two of which are common names: spotted grouper and Malabar grouper.

These two types of grouper look very similar, but they are easy to distinguish by the color of their spots.

The spots on the spotted grouper are orange-brown or reddish-brown, while those on the Malabar grouper are dark brown.

There is another type, scientifically known as the blue grouper, which looks distinctly different from the previous two types of blue grouper.

It has dark horizontal stripes on its body, including four on the sides, one on the tail peduncle, and another inconspicuous stripe on the head and neck.

In the market, spotted grouper and Malabar grouper are generally called green grouper, while green grouper is called earth grouper, earth bream, and in some places earth bream or wax bream.

The reason for this is probably due to price differences.

Spotted grouper and Malabar grouper are probably the cheapest in the grouper family, while blue grouper is more than twice as expensive.

The fish that Feng Xuan caught was a spotted grouper, covered with reddish-brown spots.

Spotted grouper can grow to over 100 or 200 pounds, so it's no wonder Feng Xuan said the one he caught was a bit small.

"Ten-odd pounds is a bit small; this fish can grow to several hundred pounds. But compared to catching other fish, this is a huge profit."

"No matter what, it can't compare to the grouper you caught. The price of my whole fish isn't even as high as the price of a single grouper."

"The spotted mouse is very rare, and you can only catch it by chance; the spotted green is much more common, and people often catch it."

After Feng Ye finished speaking, he started shoveling food into the cold rice.

Feng Xuan rubbed his stomach: "Seeing you eat makes me a little hungry too."

"It's still early. There's no rush to fish. Let's eat first."

The two men hurriedly finished their leftovers on the boat before resuming fishing.

Unexpectedly, the first fishing rod he cast after finishing his meal brought Feng Ye a pleasant surprise.

He actually pulled up a dark gray baby dolphin.

Feng Xuan was dumbfounded: "Is this a gray dolphin? It's so small and already so greedy?"

Feng Ye shook his head: "No, it should be a baby white dolphin."

Adult Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins are pure white, often with a pinkish tinge due to blood congestion. Juveniles are dark gray, which lightens with age, while subadults are a mixture of gray and pink.

"Wasn't it just chased away by orcas the day before yesterday? How come it's back today?"

Feng Xuan was somewhat puzzled.

"They might not be the same group."

Feng Ye could only guess at that.

As she spoke, she gently rubbed the little dolphin's head; it felt wonderful, soft and smooth.

Then he patted its head: "Open your mouth, I'll give you a hook."

Whether the little dolphin understood or it was just a fluke, it actually opened its mouth.

Feng Ye was afraid of hurting it, so he carefully removed the hook.

Freed from the pain of the fishhook, the little dolphin let out an excited cry and even jumped a few times on the surface of the water.

Looking at the excited little dolphin, Feng Ye also smiled. This little thing is really cute.

An idea struck him, and he took a cheap mackerel from the bucket and tossed it to the little dolphin: "Hey little guy, catch!"

As if it understood, the baby dolphin leaped out of the water and caught the bluefin bream in one gulp, then swallowed it whole.

This action left Feng Xuan somewhat dumbfounded: "Are dolphins really that smart?"

"Didn't you see it?"

Feng Ye smiled.

That would be a real shock. If they saw trained dolphins, they'd be completely dumbfounded.

Thinking to himself, he scooped another mackerel out of the bucket and threw it over.

The baby dolphin leaped again and caught it perfectly.

"Let me feed them too."

As he spoke, he took one out of the bucket, threw it out, and shouted, "Little guy, catch!"

The two stopped fishing and happily scooped out one cheap fish after another, throwing them out to feed the cute little creature.

The baby dolphin accepts any fish that comes its way; it catches them and swallows them whole.

After a while, a cry of "yì~wū~yì~wū" came from a distance.

Upon hearing this sound, the baby dolphin abandoned the fish and made the same, but more childish, call, before swimming away into the distance.

"You're leaving already?"

Feng Xuan hadn't had enough fun yet.

"It must be a dolphin calling it."

As soon as he finished speaking, Feng Ye saw three huge white dolphins emerge from the sea in the distance and swim towards the smaller dolphin.

The calls of "yì~wū~yì~wū" rose and fell.

It appears to be three large dolphins communicating with a smaller dolphin.
