The rain lasted quite a while.
Feng Ye woke up once during the night, but without opening his eyes, he heard the rain still pattering outside and went back to sleep peacefully.
Forget about going out to sea today.
When I woke up the next morning, the rain had stopped sometime earlier.
The clouds parted and the sky cleared after the heavy rain, the sunlight filtering through the clouds and bringing a refreshing feeling after the rain.
However, the waves did not subside so quickly; they remained somewhat turbulent, making it unsuitable for going out to sea.
Early in the morning, a large group of people stood on the dock, cursing incessantly at the sea.
Everyone was hoping to make a fortune during the flood season, but then the weather took an unexpected turn.
But there was nothing they could do but wait and hope that the waves would subside as soon as possible.
Feng Ye stood at the door for a while, then went inside and sat down to wait for breakfast.
It's good that the weather is clear now; the squid that's been drying for less than a day can continue drying and won't go bad and have to be thrown away.
Given the situation today, we can't deliver the dried fish to the county or city; we have to stop for a day.
Although he didn't know if there were any orders in the city today, he would go to the county every day as long as the weather was good.
That's the downside of living on an island; you can't go out when there's a storm or heavy rain.
Unlike living on the shore, where sea routes are impassable, there are still land routes.
After breakfast, once the ground had dried sufficiently, I went to the workshop to get busy.
The squid are still in the warehouse; we need to take them out to dry, and while we're at it, we should also turn them over.
Ah-chan and the others came over too, and helped out.
They were busy in the workshop when Xiao Guowen suddenly came over.
"Heh, you've dried so many squid. Luckily, the rain only lasted one night. If it had rained for several more days, you would have been in deep trouble."
He made a joke as soon as he came in.
"We won't lose money. At worst, we'll work for nothing. Anyway, we didn't spend any money. We caught them ourselves."
Feng Ye immediately retorted, "You're the one who'll suffer a huge loss. Don't think I don't know, you bought several thousand catties of fish to dry yesterday."
"Well……"
Xiao Guowen was speechless for a moment, then chuckled dryly, "I was just looking at the nice weather, who knew it would suddenly start raining, but luckily it didn't last long."
He picked up a squid, squeezed it, and asked, "Did you catch this the day before yesterday? Did you leave yesterday's squid to dry?"
"Isn't that obvious?"
Feng Ye rolled his eyes. "Who would dare keep it on a rainy day? They'd definitely sell it."
"Damn it, are you on fire? Can't you speak properly?"
"It's you who's spouting nonsense, isn't it?"
"Okay, okay, it's my fault."
Xiao Guowen shook his head helplessly, stopped arguing with Feng Ye, and said seriously, "You guys are really amazing. You caught so many squid in one day. It must be close to two thousand catties, right?"
Feng Ye shook his head: "There aren't that many, just over 1,800 jin."
"That's still a lot, isn't it?"
Xiao Guowen said, "I worked non-stop all afternoon and only managed to catch a little over 500 jin."
“You’re just one person, while we have two boats and four people. If you’re even fewer than me, what’s the point of us doing this?”
Feng Ye continued, "Actually, you could go out to sea with just the two of you. These squid die almost immediately after laying their eggs, so you have to catch them as soon as possible before that happens. How could you possibly manage all that alone?"
"Sigh, I'd like to too, but the workshop needs people to do the work, doesn't it?"
Xiao Guowen said helplessly, "Just like yesterday, if no one is home, all the dried fish I've been drying will get soaked by the rain."
Feng Ye glanced at him sideways: "Are you stupid?"
"How could I be so stupid?"
Xiao Guowen was stunned for a moment, "Explain yourself clearly, or I'll get angry with you."
"I told you you're stupid, but you don't believe me and you even got angry with me."
Feng Ye pursed his lips, "You just got back from Huanzhongzhou a few days ago, and you've already forgotten?"
"What's the meaning?"
Xiao Guowen frowned, still not understanding what Feng Ye meant.
Seeing that he still hadn't figured it out, Feng Ye was speechless.
He really is a blockhead.
He sighed and said irritably, "Why don't you hire someone to come with you on this trip?"
"Now is the perfect time to catch squid; once this opportunity is gone, it's gone forever."
“Hire someone, pay him five dollars a day, plus a 1% commission, and he’ll work even harder than you would.”
Upon hearing this, Xiao Guowen slapped himself hard: "Damn, I'm such an idiot, I didn't even think of that."
"Thanks a lot, brother, you've solved a big problem for me."
He patted Feng Ye on the shoulder, looking very grateful.
Feng Ye waved his hand: "No need for thanks, there's no need between us."
"Yes, yes."
Xiao Guowen then changed the subject, "By the way, I also want to dry squid, do you buy it?"
"You want to get some sun too?"
"Um."
"Accepting it is no problem, but there are some things I need to make clear to you beforehand."
"You speak, I'm listening."
Feng Ye thought for a moment and organized his thoughts: "First of all, I don't know if they'll sell well, since ours haven't been dried yet and we haven't started selling them."
"That's a problem. If they don't sell well, your dried squid might sit in your hands for a long time."
"You know this stuff is more expensive, so it can't be like other dried fish, where it's dried and then harvested for you in just a few days."
“We definitely have to sell our own stock first. Only when we run out of stock will we buy yours to sell.”
"I understand."
Xiao Guowen nodded. "Anything else?"
"Also, you can only dry the squid you catch yourself. If you want to dry more, you can't buy squid from fishermen; you can only buy them from fishmongers or from the market in the county."
