Chapter 694 Seven-Point Pomfret

After Feng Ye finished tidying up on the deck, he immediately called Ah Can and the others to go and pull in the net.

Even though it's not time to haul in the nets yet, aren't you worried about whether you've caught any small manta rays?

We'll have to move the time up.

As everyone watched the trawl net being pulled back little by little, they felt both nervous and expectant.

Finally, the trawl net was fully exposed above the water.

Everyone looked closely and immediately cheered.

On the top layer of the net lay numerous small manta rays, densely packed together, making it impossible to discern their exact number.

"Haha, it seems that Ah-Can's worries were unnecessary."

A satisfied smile immediately appeared on Feng Ye's face.

"Now Ah-chan won't be thrown into the sea, right?"

Someone joked.

Ah-Can also breathed a sigh of relief and laughed, "Thank goodness, the trawl net worked well, and these little guys cooperated and actually sank to the middle and lower waters."

Once the crane lifted the trawl net up and the cargo inside was poured onto the deck, everyone could see it more clearly.

The top layer was entirely covered with stingrays, almost completely obscuring the various fish, shrimp, and crabs below.

"Everyone be careful. Let's deal with the stingrays first, and then count them to see how many there are."

As Feng Ye gave instructions, he also started doing the work himself.

The group carefully used pliers to remove the barbs from the tails of the stingrays.

This time the stingray was still alive, so you have to be extra careful when handling it to avoid being stung by its flailing tail.

Therefore, the speed is much slower.

However, since everyone involved was experienced and there were many of them, the process was relatively quick.

The final count revealed nearly 182 fish, weighing approximately 4,500 jin (2,200 catties).

Adding in the other various goods, it's estimated to be over 3,000 jin (1,500 kg).

It's gone viral!

The catch from this voyage, both in terms of weight and value, has broken records for this overseas trip.

To everyone's surprise, there was another surprise in the remaining pile of fish.

After processing the manta rays, the group immediately began sorting the other goods.

Suddenly, Ye Chenliang, holding a fish, asked in confusion, "Is this a Spanish mackerel? Why does it look a little different?"

Feng Ye glanced at it casually: "It's just mackerel, what's the difference?"

There are five species of mackerel: blue-spotted mackerel, Comte mackerel, spotted mackerel, Chinese mackerel, and Korean mackerel.

It's normal for people to be different from each other.

However, the most common and most widely caught species on the market is the blue-spotted mackerel.

Ye Chenliang only knew the Blue-spotted Mackerel.

Therefore, Feng Ye, noticing that the fish's appearance resembled that of a Spanish mackerel, naturally assumed it was a Spanish mackerel and did not examine it closely.

"Oh, so this is a mackerel too."

Without giving it much thought, Ye Chenliang casually prepared to throw it into the basket.

But Ah-Can noticed the difference and quickly said, "Let me see."

"Could I have misread it?"

Feng Ye's heart stirred, and he looked up at the fish that A-Can had just received.

Upon closer inspection, something was indeed amiss.

This fish does look very similar to a mackerel, but there are also significant differences.

This is also a fish with a bluish-gray back and a silvery-white belly.

However, unlike others, it has seven lead-gray oblong patches arranged horizontally on its sides, making it look quite unique.

Seven-point pomfret

It was these seven spots that allowed him to recognize the fish's identity; it really wasn't a mackerel.

At this moment, Ah-Can also recognized it and said with some surprise, "This is a seven-point pomfret."

Feng Ye nodded: "It is indeed a seven-spot pomfret. I didn't look closely just now and thought it was another kind of mackerel."

The name "seven-spot pomfret" comes from the seven round spots on its sides.

However, this is not its real name, but just a common name given to it.

Moreover, although it contains the character "鲳" (pomfret), it is not a pomfret at all, and they have no relation to it whatsoever.

Pomfret belongs to the genus *Scoptora* of the family Scoptidae in the order Perciformes, while seven-spot pomfret belongs to the genus *Scoptora* of the family Carangidae in the order Perciformes.

To be precise, the term "seven-spot pomfret" does not refer to a single species of fish, but rather to four species of fish in the genus *Triplophysa*: *Triplophysa kangsiensis* (large-mouthed trevally), *Triplophysa longjaws* (reverse hook trevally), *Triplophysa transverseis* (striped trevally), and *Triplophysa torreux* (striped trevally).

They all share the characteristic of having 5-8 lead-gray oblong spots on their sides when fresh, but these spots gradually disappear after death.

In addition, the juvenile fish have no round spots at all.

They also have another name, "Queen Fish".

The fish caught by the Dong Sheng ship is the Kangshi trevally, which is also called the high-backed seven-spot pomfret in order to distinguish it from other seven-spot pomfret.

"I didn't expect to catch seven-point pomfret in this net, that's really good."

Feng Ye was overjoyed. "Let's keep looking. If we find one more, we'll have more."

Seven-spot pomfret generally do not act alone; they have a tendency to congregate, although the group size is relatively small.

In the world of sea fishing, the seven-spot pomfret is a very popular fish species.

Not only is its flesh delicious, but it is also quite challenging to catch, and the feeling after hooking a fish is amazing.

The key is that this fish is quite fierce and bites the hook aggressively. Even if it gets off the hook, there's no need to regret it, as it will continue to bite.
