It was already past seven o'clock when we got back to Dongtou Village Wharf.
This is the time when fishing boats return to unload their cargo.
The dock was as crowded as ever.
Seeing basket after basket of fish being unloaded from the Rising Sun ship, many people gathered around and asked all sorts of questions.
"My goodness, so many silver pomfret! Have you encountered another school of fish?"
"How come you guys are so lucky? You encounter schools of fish every few days, while I've only had one in half a year."
"Tell us what happened today..."
Feng Ye didn't respond; he just wanted to sell the fish quickly and go home.
Ah-Can, however, boasted with great interest, "You've mistaken it for a silver pomfret."
"Isn't that just silver pomfret? What else could it be?"
"If it's not silver pomfret, could it be white pomfret?"
“You guessed right, they really are white pomfret,” Ah-Can said proudly. “And what’s more, these weren’t caught in a trawl net; they were given to us by dolphins.”
"A gift from dolphins? You're just bragging again!"
Someone in the crowd laughed in disbelief, which drew a burst of laughter.
Ah-Can wasn't annoyed at all; instead, he raised his chin even more smugly: "Hey, you guys don't believe me, do you?"
"Today when we went out to sea, we encountered a group of dolphins hunting and driving away a group of fish."
"Brother Ye used a wooden stick to splash the water and attracted the dolphins, which in turn attracted the fish."
"Look, one netful and it's full of treasures!"
"Really? Are you kidding us?"
The fishermen watching were skeptical, but Ah-chan's expression didn't seem like he was lying.
"Of course it's true! You can ask Brother Ye if you don't believe me!"
Ah-Can pointed to Feng Ye, who was carrying a basket of fish out of the cabin.
Feng Ye smiled and nodded, which was taken as tacit agreement with A-Can's statement.
"Holy crap, it's true! I've never heard of such a thing before."
"How can splashing water with a wooden stick attract dolphins? Is there any explanation for this?"
"Yeah, is there some kind of saying about it? Ah Ye, tell us..."
Seeing so many people curiously waiting for his answer, Feng Ye loaded the basket onto the cart and generously said:
"Actually, there's nothing special about it. I just heard someone say that the sound of a wooden stick hitting the water is very similar to the sound of a type of fish that dolphins like to eat."
"Therefore, when we strike the water with a stick, the dolphins will mistake the sound for a food signal and be attracted to it."
"If you spot a pod of dolphins in the future, you can first set up a net, then find a stick and hit the water's surface to attract the dolphins."
"The noise they make will frighten nearby fish, causing them to flee forward and crash into the pre-placed nets."
Upon hearing this, the crowd erupted in astonishment and discussion:
"So that's how it is. No wonder Ah-chan said the dolphins were a gift for you. It really is..."
"I understand, I understand, I've learned something. If I encounter dolphins in the future, I can try it."
"My fishing nets are all ruined, I need to buy a few more to keep on the boat..."
"That's right, I'll go buy a few too, just in case."
"Ah Ye is becoming more and more promising; he knows so much. He even knows things that we old fishermen don't know."
"Yes, I've been fishing for almost forty years, and I still don't know as much as he does. I used to underestimate him..."
"Who told him to be so irresponsible and lazy in the past, never doing anything productive..."
"People always change, and a prodigal son who returns is more precious than gold. Ah Ye is now a capable person in our village."
"He's more than just a capable person; it wouldn't be an exaggeration to call him a role model for the entire village..."
Feng Ye felt a little embarrassed after hearing these words.
He waved his hand modestly and said, "Not at all, everyone flatter me. I just happen to know some little tricks."
"Everyone, let's not crowd around here anymore. Let's sell the fish quickly and go home to rest."
After he finished speaking, he ignored the people and turned back to the ship to continue unloading cargo.
If we keep chatting with them, I don't know how long it will last.
"With so many people surrounding you, did you manage to get your hands on some good stuff again?"
As soon as Feng Ye and A Can pushed the cart to the shop entrance, Feng Jiafa couldn't wait to ask.
If he hadn't been tied up, and if someone had been selling fish, he would have gone over to check it out.
Feng Ye smiled and said, "I won't tell you yet, let me test your eyesight."
"You're keeping me in suspense. Let me tell you, I've been collecting fish for over ten years, and there's not a single fish I don't recognize."
Feng Jiafa confidently stepped forward for a look, only to be somewhat disappointed: "That's it? I thought it would be something better. But with such a large quantity, it's not bad."
"Uncle Fa, your eyesight isn't that great either," Ah Chan shook his head. "Take another look."
Feng Jiafa glanced suspiciously at Feng Ye and A Can, noticing their amused expressions, and wondered to himself, "Could it be that I really saw things wrong?"
He then carefully examined the fish in the basket.
Suddenly, his eyes lit up: "Huh... I really did misjudge it, this isn't a silver pomfret, it's a white pomfret."
Feng Ye smiled and nodded: "That's it then."
"You guys are really lucky, and you have a good eye. This white pomfret is worth a lot more than the silver pomfret."
"Uncle Fa, what price can you offer? Let me tell you in advance, if the price isn't right, we'll go to the county to sell it."
"2.8 yuan for more than half a jin, 2 yuan for less than half a jin, isn't that a good price?"
Feng Ye nodded: "It's alright, I guess."
He knew the retail price of pomfret in the county, but he didn't know the wholesale price for large quantities.
