Feng Ye couldn't help but chuckle at his silly expression.
But he quickly stopped smiling and urged, "Stop grinning like an idiot, hurry up and count how many there are?"
Ah-Can snapped out of his daze and hurriedly said, "Yes, yes, yes..."
The gold ingots are arranged in a 6×9 pattern, meaning there are 54 in one layer.
Unfortunately, like the silver one, it only has two layers, with a total of 108.
The combined weight of the silver and gold was roughly in line with their prediction, around 180 jin (approximately 90 catties).
"Why are there only two layers? Couldn't you have put in more?"
Ah-Can grumbled somewhat discontentedly, fiddling with the box, trying to find another hidden compartment.
"You should be content. Finding so much gold and silver is already a blessing from Mazu and a stroke of good fortune from your ancestors' graves. What more could you want?"
Feng Ye rolled her eyes at him, annoyed.
The gold and silver in that box added up to a huge sum of money, enough for them to live comfortably for several lifetimes.
"We've really struck it rich."
Ah-Can chuckled and stopped fiddling with the box. His mood brightened again, and he picked up the gold ingot and kissed it several times.
Feng Ye's face lit up with a smile: "Pack it up first, there's another box next to it that hasn't been opened yet."
"Oh, right, there's another box..."
"Let's put this box of gold and silver back first, and then we'll divide it up after we've opened all the boxes."
"Um."
The two put the gold and silver ingots back into the box in the same way they had originally packed them.
With a clang, the lid of the box slammed shut, sealing the chest full of gold and silver once again.
"Brother Ye, what treasure do you think is in this other box?"
Ah-chan turned his head to look at another box of similar size placed to the side, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
Feng Ye pondered for a moment, then frowned and said, "This box is too light. It's hard to say, but one thing is certain: it's definitely not gold or silver."
"Isn't that obvious? I know it's not gold or silver."
"You were the one who asked that, weren't you?"
"Forget it, let's stop guessing and just open it."
Ah-chan picked up the hammer that was lying to the side and smashed it against the lock on the box.
After a few clanging sounds, the lock followed suit and fell onto the deck.
Neither of them had high expectations for what was inside the box.
Despite being mentally prepared, what they found when the box was actually opened still took them by surprise.
Both of them were stunned on the spot.
"How could this be?"
Ah-chan muttered to himself in disbelief.
Feng Ye was completely dumbfounded.
He had imagined it might contain spices, or calligraphy and paintings, but he never expected it to be an empty box.
"No, how can it be an empty box? It must have been opened incorrectly."
With a "snap," he closed the box again.
However, when it was opened again, it was still empty.
"Hiding an empty box in a secret compartment? Is the ship owner crazy?"
Ah-Can couldn't help but mutter a complaint, his heart filled with confusion.
"That shouldn't be the case."
Feng Ye also frowned.
Logically speaking, an empty box wouldn't be worth hiding in a secret compartment; something must have been left out.
He looked inside the box more carefully.
Upon closer inspection, they actually discovered something.
At the bottom of the box, there was a layer of something that looked like mud.
He pointed to the bottom of the box: "Ah Can, what do you think is on the bottom layer?"
Upon hearing this, Ah-Can came closer, looked at it, and said uncertainly, "This...this is mud, isn't it?"
Before Feng Ye could respond, he immediately shook his head, dismissing his own thoughts: "No, it can't be mud. Could it be something that rotted away and was left behind?"
Feng Ye nodded: "It should be correct."
"What was originally inside?"
Ah-chan scratched his head, looking puzzled.
"It could be spices, or it could be ledgers or something, but they're all gone now, and there's no way to know for sure."
Feng Ye reached out and scraped some mud from the bottom of the box, then smelled it.
Apart from a slight fishy smell, I couldn't detect any other odors.
"Forget it, never mind what it is. A chest of gold and silver is already a fortune. Besides, there are four more chests down there; there might be some treasure inside."
"Yes, we still have four boxes waiting to be brought up, and we haven't opened them yet."
Ah-Can composed himself and stopped worrying about it. He then said, "This box is practically an antique, isn't it? Should we take it home?"
"Why take it back? What if someone with ulterior motives sees it? Wouldn't that just be asking for trouble? Just throw it into the sea."
It's just a box, what's the big deal?
Moreover, it doesn't look like it's made of a precious wood like sandalwood.
Even if it were an antique, this kind of civilian-use item probably wouldn't be worth much money.
"Okay, then throw it into the sea."
Ah-Can closed the box, carried it to the beach, and threw it directly into the sea.
Feng Ye picked up the two broken locks that had fallen down and threw them into the sea as well.
Then, he patted the rust off his hands and said, "Come on, carry this box of gold and silver into the cabin and put it there first."
"good."
With each person holding one end, the two of them used all their strength to lift the box and slowly move it towards the cabin.
After putting the box into the cabin, both of them were panting heavily.
"Damn, it's heavy..."
Ah-Can shook his arm and grinned.
