Liu Aimei had thought it through very clearly.
She's only in her thirties. She won't be going back to the Liu family anymore. She'll definitely want to find another man to marry. She can't let this child be a burden to her.
If no one can raise Tong Anqu, then hand her over to the police and let them figure it out. Whether they give the child to the Tong family or send him to an orphanage is none of her business.
Liu Aimei sorted out her thoughts, stood up, and looked at Tong Anqu sitting on the sofa with a complicated expression.
Tong Anqu knew nothing about this, nor did he know who the strange woman in front of him was.
The milk in the bottle was quickly emptied.
Tong Anqu continued to sob, but her crying wasn't as intense as before.
Liu Aimei ignored him and went into the kitchen to cook dinner. Tong Anqu, who was ignored by everyone, soon started crying again, his cries echoing throughout the entire building.
This time, not only Mr. and Mrs. Zheng, but even the downstairs neighbors couldn't stand it anymore.
No sooner had one left than another arrived.
The woman living downstairs was very impatient with Liu Aimei.
"What kind of mother are you? Your child is crying like this and you're not even doing anything about it?"
"Honestly, what kind of person is this? Don't they know they're disturbing the peace?"
The next second, Liu Aimei opened the door.
The young woman at the door froze.
The young woman was taken aback at first, then said, "What are you looking at? I'm talking to you. Oh, the baby's still crying. Are you the only one taking care of him? Where's your husband?"
Liu Aimei was furious.
"It's normal for kids to cry. Don't you have any compassion? Can't you just hold back? It's not like I told him to stop crying!"
The young woman's eyes widened. "Hey, what kind of attitude is that? I was just trying to be nice and tell you something!"
"It's none of your business!"
"What kind of attitude is this?! What do you mean it's none of my business? You've seriously disturbed the peace! Have some public decency if you live here. There are elderly people living in this building. If anything goes wrong, you'll be blamed!"
Upon hearing that the police were calling, Liu Aimei reacted as if a switch had been flipped.
"Call the police? Fine, go ahead and call the police then! This isn't my son at all! You'd better call the police and have them take him away! Don't waste my time here!"
"Damn it, you woman would say something like that to shirk responsibility! You don't even acknowledge your own son! If you don't want to take responsibility, why did you give birth to him? Wouldn't it have been better to just let him fend for himself?! I'm really fed up with people like you. You only care about your own pleasure when you're having fun, but now that someone's dead, you're not going to take responsibility!"
"If it weren't for your child, how could he be here? I'm warning you again, if he keeps making noise, don't blame me for being impolite!"
Liu Aimei was so angry she almost vomited blood. Just as she was about to speak, the Zheng couple next door opened their door and came out.
Mr. and Mrs. Zheng also looked annoyed.
Old Zheng glared at Liu Aimei: "She's been crying for two or three hours. If you can't soothe her, send her to her father to comfort her, or ask your parents or in-laws to comfort her!"
If he were to cry all night, Old Zheng's explosive temper would definitely not be able to hold back.
Liu Aimei shouted angrily, "I told you, this isn't my son! I'm not his mother! I don't know who sent him!"
The young woman said incredulously, "If it's not your child, why did you bring it home? You're kidding me!"
Liu Aimei shouted angrily, "Get out of here, all of you!"
Old Zheng thought Liu Aimei probably had some kind of mental illness and kindly advised her.
There's a hospital not far ahead; I suggest you go there for a checkup.
Liu Aimei was even angrier, and turned around to slam the door shut.
The three people left at the door—Old Zheng and his wife, and the young woman—looked at each other in bewilderment.
The young woman frowned. "What's wrong with her?"
Old Zheng's wife was too lazy to say anything more, so she pulled Old Zheng into the house.
"Never mind her, never mind her, she's not mentally unstable."
When Liu Aimei returned home, Tong Anqu was still sobbing, so Liu Aimei made him some milk again.
She calmed down when she had milk, but started crying again after a while.
Liu Aimei smelled the stench in the air and felt like her scalp was about to split open. Why did God have to treat her like this?
Liu Aimei suppressed her grief and anger and changed Tong Anqu's clothes.
After a whole night of tossing and turning, Liu Aimei barely slept.
She left home at five o'clock the next morning.
Carrying Tong Anqu on his back and the two large bags from yesterday in his hands, he went to the local police station.
It's still dark.
Liu Aimei walked very carefully, afraid of being seen. She quickly went over, put down her bag, untied the child, put him down to sit by the wall, and then turned and ran away.
Liu Aimei ran very fast.
When the police officers on duty heard the crying and came out to investigate, they only saw Tong Anqu; there was no one else in sight.
I went to the police station.
People these days are really daring.
In broad daylight, they dared to abandon their baby right in front of the police station.
Two police officers went along the street asking around. After a morning of inquiries, they finally got a sanitation worker who was on his way to work in the early morning to say that he had seen a woman carrying a child walking toward the police station.
"Are you carrying two big bags?"
"Oh, right, right, she was carrying a baby on her back." The sanitation worker carefully recalled what she saw that morning. "It was pretty strange, I thought she was going to catch a bus, but she was walking in the opposite direction."
"Where did she come from?"
"Look, it's right in front."
The two police officers then traveled along the road to Lao Zheng's Teahouse.
After hearing the police's description, Lao Zheng and his wife exchanged a glance.
The police, sensing an opportunity, asked, "Do you know the situation?"
Old Zheng: "I might not know about anything else you mentioned, but I vaguely remember those two big black bags..."
Old Zheng told me about the female neighbor across the street yesterday.
"Anyway, I don't know her name, but yesterday there was a baby and two bags in front of her house."
The police officer nodded, indicating that he understood, and then asked Lao Zheng if he could contact the landlord of the house across the street.
Old Zheng said he didn't know, so the police went back to the police station to check the records.
-
Liu Aimei was distracted at work all day.
She felt she hadn't done a good job with what she had done that morning.
She should have sent Tong Anqu further away, preferably outside the hospital, since there are many abandoned babies and young couples who can't have children outside the hospital anyway.
The police station is so close to her home...
What if they come looking for her?
Feeling upset, Liu Aimei left work and headed home on time.
But as soon as I got downstairs, I saw two police officers standing not far away.
Liu Aimei turned to run away.
The two police officers reacted quickly and gave chase. Liu Aimei was caught in just a dozen or twenty steps.
"Officer, is there some misunderstanding?" Liu Aimei forced a laugh, almost bursting into tears.
“Liu Aimei, you deliberately abandoned your child this morning, which is a violation of the law.”
Liu Aimei's face turned pale instantly.
