Chapter 65 Pork is Delicious

Everyone was delighted to hear that the miniature pig might be giving birth to baby miniature piglets, but along with the excitement came a series of problems.

The two miniature pigs are currently fed leftover food, vegetable scraps, corn, and potatoes.

These two eat a lot, though the food is poor. If another litter comes, we really can't afford to raise them.

Grandpa Gu Bei suggested that they could kill the male piglet first, and salt the rest if they couldn't eat it. After the female piglet was weaned three weeks after giving birth, they could kill the female piglet as well. By then, it would probably be the coldest time of winter, and the pork could be frozen in the snow outside, so that they could have meat to eat throughout the winter.

Although there are many piglets, they eat little and can still survive.

Just leave the two ends when they get a little bigger.

Qiao An'an thought this was a good idea.

Gu Bei stood outside the pigpen, his eyes filled with pity. Ya Ya was almost in tears: "The pigs are so cute, are you really going to kill them and eat them?"

Qiao An'an was worried that killing the piglet would leave a psychological scar on the two children.

Grandpa Gu Bei laughed and said, "He has no trauma whatsoever. When he eats meat, he might even enjoy it more than we do!"

The people in the courtyard hadn't eaten fresh pork in a long time.

Qiao An'an decided to stop peeling the corn for now and slaughter the pig to eat the meat first. So she threw the corn she was holding back into the corn pile and went to fetch water to put in the big pot to boil.

Grandpa Gu Bei then asked Gu Bei to take Ya Ya to the second floor to learn to read.

After Gu Bei and Ya Ya left, Gu Bei's grandfather called Chi Xiaoyu to tie up the little pig.

To prevent the piglet from squealing, Grandpa Gu Bei stuffed a towel into its mouth before tying it up.

Chi Xiaoyu neatly and efficiently tied up the piglet's limbs and placed it on the table in the kitchen where pig feed was chopped. Then she took a basin and put it under the table to catch the blood.

Grandpa Gu Bei swiftly and accurately stabbed the little pig in the heart.

The little pig tried to squeal, but the towel in its mouth blocked it, and it could not make a sound. It struggled for a while before it died.

Fortunately, the pig wasn't big, only about 70 or 80 pounds.

After the pig was completely dead, they put it in a basin filled with hot water to scrape off its hair. Qiao An'an, Chi Xiaoyu, and Grandpa Gu Bei worked together and it took them almost half an hour to scrape it clean.

After scraping off the hair, the pig was gutted. The heart, liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys, and even the intestines were not wasted. They were washed many times in the well water until they were clean.

The miniature pigs were small and had few internal organs. After blanching them, Qiao An'an put them directly into a pot with pork and pig ears, along with water, scallions, ginger, a spice packet, soy sauce, light soy sauce, and salt, and braised them over high heat.

They removed the pork fat from the remaining pork and rendered it in another pot, since they were almost out of pork fat at home.

Because the weather has gotten colder recently, the pork won't spoil as quickly. They kept the pig's trotters to stew in soup after a couple of days, and also kept the tenderloin to stir-fry as shredded pork.

The rest are salted and eaten slowly.

After finishing all this, Grandpa Gu Bei started the fire to cook, while Qiao An'an and Chi Xiaoyu continued to peel corn kernels.

Soon after, the aroma of braised pork offal wafted out.

Gu Bei, who was teaching Ya Ya to read upstairs, was the first to smell the aroma. Ya Ya smelled it too. The two little ones, who hadn't had fresh pork in a long time, sniffed and came downstairs: "Grandpa, what are you making? It smells so good!"

The pig offal is almost done braising.

Grandpa Gu Bei took out the easiest-to-cook pig tongue, cut it in half, and put it into two bowls, one for Gu Bei and one for Ya Ya.

The two little ones, holding bowls and laughing heartily, ate the pig's tongue, completely forgetting their reluctance to part with the miniature pig this morning: "It's so delicious! Grandpa, you're amazing!!!"

Because the pork is quite plentiful.

Grandpa Gu Bei took the braised pork out, garnished it with minced garlic and soy sauce, and then used a few tomatoes that Qiao An'an had picked from the forest ranger's hut to make a tomato and lean pork meatball soup. He also stir-fried celery with shredded pork. To save food, the rice was a mixed grain rice with corn kernels mixed in.

The corn is sweet and sticky.

After being cooked with rice, it had a sweet aroma that Ya Ya loved. She ate more than half a bowl of rice in one go: "Grandpa's cooking is delicious, even better than Mom's!"

Grandpa Gu Bei said with a smile, "In the past, we only ate mixed grain rice because we couldn't afford to eat rice. When we were young, our dream was to eat a meal of rice. I never thought that you young people would think this is delicious."

I ate even more at this meal than I did last night.

Big Black was happily gnawing on the bones inside the pig's head, making satisfied whimpering sounds from time to time. Fortunately, it was quite intelligent, and the whimpering wasn't too loud, so it didn't alert the zombies outside.

After finishing their meal, everyone in the courtyard joined in husking corn, and soon all the kernels were gone.

The rooftop has been covered with greenhouses and vegetables, leaving no place to dry the corn, so everyone puts the corn under the eaves to dry.

After doing all this, Grandpa Gu Bei told everyone to wash their hands and go upstairs to rest for a while.

I went to the kitchen and prepared some dough to make steamed buns for everyone that evening.

I was busy all morning and half an afternoon.

Everyone was indeed quite tired, so they washed their hands and faces and went upstairs to sleep. Not long after they lay down, they heard a huge explosion in the distance.

The explosion woke everyone in the courtyard.

Everyone got up and looked toward the source of the explosion, only to find that the explosion came from behind the overpass, which seemed to be the direction Chen Zhou and the others had gone.

In the distance, flames soared into the sky from the explosion.

The zombies that had been gathered on the road outside the courtyard all rushed toward the firelight.

Soon only a few scattered zombies remained on the road.
