Chapter 31 Emergency Transfer of Supplies in the Small Courtyard

Qiao An'an felt that the old man's suggestion was very necessary.

They planned to act only after nightfall, and before that, they not only had to remain absolutely silent, but also had to stay in the room with the curtains drawn.

Cooking is out of the question.

Qiao An'an took out some biscuits and had everyone eat them with well water.

Grandpa Gu Bei and Gu Bei had experienced even harder times than this, so they didn't think much of it and just picked it up and started eating.

Big Blackie, who has rummaged through the trash cans, is not picky at all. He's happy as long as there's food, and his tail wags loudly.

Startled, Qiao An'an quickly stopped it: "Shh, be quiet..."

Chi Xiaoyu and Ya Ya had absolutely no interest in the compressed biscuits; they only ate a couple of bites before giving up.

Qiao An'an said helplessly, "I'll make you something delicious tonight. There's no way to go to the yard to fetch water to wash rice and vegetables right now."

The group stayed up until late at night. The fire on the opposite rooftop was extinguished, and everyone went downstairs to sleep. The only guard on the rooftop also started to doze off. Ya Ya was so asleep that she couldn't be woken up no matter how much they shook her.

Qiao An'an put Ya Ya on the bed, then asked Grandpa Gu Bei to use the scope on his sniper rifle to observe the situation on the other side, while she took the sleepy-eyed Chi Xiaoyu and Gu Bei downstairs.

They first found a water bucket in the kitchen, filled it with water, and put it back in the kitchen so that they could draw the curtains and cook with an induction cooker during the day.

They picked all the tomatoes in the yard, regardless of whether they were red or green. They also pulled up all the greens and celery, cut off the tops of the chives, dug them out, put them in bags, and took them to plant in the back.

They had already eaten quite a bit of scallions and garlic, so planting them in front would be convenient when cooking. Besides, there were only a few, so they probably wouldn't be noticed. Therefore, Qiao An'an and the others ignored it and let it continue to grow in front.

Qiao An'an was very reluctant to part with the corn and soybeans.

The corn is still too tender, and many soybeans haven't grown properly. Even the ones that have grown properly aren't ripe yet, so they can only be boiled and eaten.

But there was no other way. If they didn't pull them out, the people on the other side would know that they still had food in their yard, and they would definitely try every means to steal their food. They might even kill them to prevent future troubles.

Compared to being in such danger, losing a little food is nothing.

After finishing all this, Qiao An'an asked Chi Xiaoyu to take the vegetables back to the kitchen to organize them, while she and Gu Bei packed the five chickens into bags and took them to the back yard.

The corn in the backyard has grown to over a meter tall. Qiao An'an plans to let the chickens roam freely in the yard, only putting their rice and water in the main room. This way, the chickens will not only have plenty of space to move around, but they can also eat some insects that grow in the cornfield.

After finishing all that, she planted the chives she had dug up against the wall. Everyone says that chives need fertilizer the most. After planting them, she covered them with pig manure that she had swept out of the pigsty. Then she fed the pigs with the leftovers she had brought and gave them water.

To prevent the miniature pigs from going hungry.

There was a lot of leftover food this time.

After all, they can only come once a day at night from now on.

After doing all this, Qiao An'an and Gu Bei returned to the front yard from the cave.

Chi Xiaoyu in the front yard had already sorted out the vegetables she picked and put the green tomatoes into a bag, handing them to Qiao An'an and Gu Bei at the entrance of the cave.

The two took the packaged hard tomatoes into the storage room and arranged them there to slowly turn red before returning to the kitchen to cook.

Qiao An'an was in charge of cooking. Chi Xiaoyu and Gu Bei set aside enough green vegetables for seven days and salted the rest. Since so many vegetables wouldn't last long without a refrigerator, they planned to make the extras into pickles to eat slowly. By the time they finished cooking, it was already getting light. Ya Ya was carried downstairs by Gu Bei's grandfather.

Today's breakfast included scrambled eggs with tomatoes, leftover rabbit meat from yesterday, cumin-flavored grilled chives, boiled edamame and corn—quite a feast. Qiao An'an first served a bowl to Grandpa Gu Bei, then served rice to Chi Xiaoyu, Gu Bei, and Ya Ya: "From now on, we'll probably only be able to eat proper meals in the early morning. Everyone, hurry back to sleep after you finish eating. I'm on the first shift."

After that, they will probably have to take turns on 24-hour shifts.

Gu Bei was only twelve years old after all. Exhausted from the night, he fell asleep as soon as he touched the sofa.

Grandpa Gu felt sorry for the three children who had been busy in the backyard all night, and said to Qiao An'an, "I'm old and don't need much sleep. You've been busy all night, so go back to sleep. I'll take my turn for the next six hours."

Qiao An'an was indeed very tired. She thanked Grandpa Gu Bei, washed the dishes, and went to bed.

The master bedroom on the south side of the second floor has a good view, so the duty shift can only be done in the master bedroom on the second floor. Therefore, Qiao An'an asked Chi Xiaoyu to help move the big bed from the master bedroom into the second bedroom. The two beds were put together and filled the second bedroom, turning it into a large dormitory. Ya Ya excitedly rolled around on the two beds: "What a big bed! Ya Ya likes the big bed."

Babies naturally need a lot of sleep, and since she went to bed late yesterday and was forced to get up super early for breakfast today, Yaya was very excited, but after rolling around for a while, she became so sleepy that she fell asleep on her pillow.

Qiao An'an and Chi Xiaoyu were also very sleepy, so they each held Ya Ya on one side and fell asleep as well.

All four members of the family fell asleep.

Even in her sleep, Chi Xiaoyu still held the bow and arrow tightly in her hand, the arrow pointing directly at Grandpa Gu Bei who was guarding them. Even though Grandpa Gu Bei had been helping them these past few days, Chi Xiaoyu remained wary of him.

Grandpa Gu Bei was completely unaware of all this. He sat upright in front of the floor-to-ceiling window of the master bedroom on the second floor, nervously watching the opposite community through the curtains with the scope on his sniper rifle.
