Hearing that familiar voice, Qiao An'an wondered if it was that black country dog that had come again after smelling the aroma of her house's food.
But she has made it clear that she cannot take it in.
And it seemed to understand.
Why is it digging at her door again? If its actions attract zombies, she and Ya Ya will be in danger.
Thinking of this, Qiao An'an pulled a stick from the pile of firewood and walked towards the door, wanting to teach that disobedient dog a lesson.
But the dog completely ignored the stick in Qiao An'an's hand and actually plunged headfirst into Qiao An'an's yard, even stepping into the corn and soybean fields she had just planted.
Fortunately, the corn and soybeans had just been planted and hadn't sprouted yet.
If these seeds sprout, wouldn't everything be ruined? You have to understand that getting these seeds in the apocalypse is already an unexpected blessing.
Qiao An'an was afraid the dog would trample on the potato field. The potato seedlings were already 20 or 30 centimeters tall, and the potatoes would be ready for harvest in another month or two. It would be a huge loss if the dog ruined them.
She swung the stick and charged forward, yelling, "Get away! Get away from me!!!"
After rushing over, Qiao An'an realized that the dog had rushed into her yard to stop a large tabby cat from stealing the fish from her fishpond.
At that moment, the large tabby cat had already dragged out the largest crucian carp from the fishpond.
Presumably because the fish was too big for it to move, it didn't leave but ate right there by the fishpond. The crucian carp's head had already been gnawed off by the tabby catfish.
When the tabby cat saw the dog, it initially growled resentfully. But when it saw the dog open its mouth to bite it, it had no choice but to release the crucian carp and quickly darted onto the wall.
Qiao An'an then remembered that the electric fence on her wall had been turned off during the day, which gave the big tabby cat an opportunity to take advantage of her.
Actually, a few days ago, Qiao An'an noticed that the number of small fish fry had decreased, but the number of large fish had not decreased. She thought that the small fish fry had been eaten by the large fish, so she did not take the matter of the missing fish fry seriously. Little did she know that they had been stolen and eaten by this big tabby fish.
If the dog hadn't discovered the tabby cat stealing fish and barged in to chase it away, all the fish in this pond would probably have perished.
After the paparazzi chased the tabby cat away, it wagged its tail frantically at Qiao An'an, as if to say, "I'm awesome, right? Praise me!"
Qiao An'an patted the dog's head: "Thank you."
The dog seemed to enjoy Qiao An'an's petting. It looked like it was a pet dog before the apocalypse, but its owner was probably gone, which is why it ended up like this.
Ya Ya also saw the dog. Kids her age have absolutely no resistance to furry creatures, and she'd been pestering Qiao An'an to get one. Now that she saw a big dog in the house, she excitedly ran towards it, shouting, "Doggy!!!"
The big dog was filthy, and Qiao An'an didn't dare let Ya Ya touch it. She quickly stopped Ya Ya, saying, "No!"
Ya Ya expressed her grievance: "Why can Mommy touch it, but Ya Ya can't?"
Qiao An'an could only explain, "The dog is dirty, and Ya Ya's immune system is weak. Let's wash it clean before letting Ya Ya touch it, okay?"
Ya Ya's eyes lit up after hearing this: "Does Mom mean we can keep Big Black?"
"Big Black?"
In no time at all, my daughter had already come up with a name for the dog, which was quite fitting for this black Chinese rural dog.
Qiao An'an looked at the dog wagging its tail incessantly and wondered if chasing it away now would seem like kicking someone after they've served their purpose. Besides, the solar panels at home couldn't guarantee 24-hour power from the grid. If she chased the dog away and Da Mao came back, she would lose fish from her fishpond.
She can always wait until the corn and potatoes are ripe before planting them.
"If you work hard, you won't starve. Mom promises you you can keep Big Black, but you can't touch it now. Not only can you not touch it, you also have to go back to your room and eat properly!"
Ya Ya obediently nodded and went back inside to continue eating.
Big Black seemed to understand Qiao An'an and Ya Ya's conversation, and its tail wagged even more vigorously.
Qiao An'an pointed to the hole that Dahei had just dug and said to Dahei, "Go fill it in."
Big Black obediently went to fill the hole.
Qiao An'an picked up the crucian carp from the ground.
If it were a fish that had been bitten by a stray cat in the past, she would definitely have chosen to throw it away.
But in this apocalyptic world, she couldn't bear to throw away a single grain of food.
Besides, apart from a bit of the head being gnawed off and a few scales missing, the crucian carp was otherwise intact. Chopping off the entire head shouldn't affect its edibility, right?
Qiao An'an rinsed the muddy crucian carp under well water, took it back to the kitchen, removed the head and innards with scissors, put the fish meat into a plate, covered it with plastic wrap, and prepared to cook it for Ya Ya tomorrow.
Then I sat down and ate the dinner that Ya Ya hadn't finished eating with her.
Ya Ya looked at Da Hei, who had finished filling the hole in the doorway and was standing in the yard watching them eat but was too scared to come in, and pleaded with Qiao An'an, "Da Hei is so pitiful, Mom, please give Da Hei some food too."
Qiao An'an didn't initially think that Dahei was that pitiful.
But after Ya Ya said that, it does seem like she really is quite pitiful.
Qiao An'an finished the rice in her bowl in a few bites, then put the innards, fish head and scales that she had just removed from the fish's belly into an unused iron basin, added some water and steamed it in a pot. After that, she added some rice and mixed it in. Once the iron basin had cooled down enough to handle, she took it to Da Hei outside to eat.
Ya Ya also picked up the chicken bones she had left over and put them into Da Hei's rice bowl.
Big Black must be starving.
Even though it had already eaten the chicken bones from Qiao An'an's house at noon, it still immediately started eating heartily when it saw food. It not only finished all the food that Qiao An'an had prepared for it, but also drank all the well water that Ya Ya had drawn for it.
