Chi Xiaoyu had lost too much blood, so after going upstairs, Qiao An'an prepared to put her in the second bedroom and let her rest in bed.
Before going to sleep, Chi Xiaoyu habitually put the bow and arrows under her pillow, then took out some clean clothes from the backpack she always carried, and handed the rest to Qiao An'an.
The first thing she said after arriving in the courtyard was, "These are some daily necessities and food that I packed up after the accident. Find a place to put them."
Qiao An'an didn't take Chi Xiaoyu's bag, but instead scolded her, "This is the apocalypse! How can you so easily hand over your survival supplies to someone else for safekeeping? With your naive personality, you'd probably be helping the person who sold you out count the money!"
After arriving at the courtyard, Chi Xiaoyu didn't say a word.
It's not that she doesn't like to talk, but rather that she suffers from severe depression and only speaks when absolutely necessary.
But Qiao An'an is different.
She is not a stranger.
Chi Xiaoyu slightly curled her lips, her fox-like eyes instantly curving into a beautiful arc: "I don't trust anyone else, but I trust Sister An'an a thousand times over."
Qiao An'an couldn't persuade Chi Xiaoyu otherwise. After coaxing Ya Ya to sleep, she started tidying up Chi Xiaoyu's bag. In addition to some anti-inflammatory and fever-reducing medicine, the bag contained some compressed biscuits, canned luncheon meat, and sausages that could be stored for a long time. There was also a lot of salt at the bottom of the bag.
Qiao An'an couldn't help but smile. She had mentioned before that the vegetables in the yard were growing too well and she wanted to make them into pickles, but she didn't have any salt. She didn't expect Chi Xiaoyu to remember.
This child.
He seems carefree, but he's actually quite thoughtful.
After organizing the supplies in Chi Xiaoyu's backpack, Qiao An'an wanted to go back to the master bedroom to sleep, but she couldn't fall asleep no matter what she did.
How could she politely ask Gu Bei and his grandson to leave?
You don't know the cost of firewood and rice until you're in charge of the household.
Don't be fooled by the fact that the grandfather and grandson are in their seventies or eighties and are only eleven or twelve, the age when a young boy can eat his father out of house and home. He eats more than the three of them combined.
Qiao An'an calculated that even if Chi Xiaoyu and the others brought back rice and flour, it would only last until the end of the year if the five people were to eat.
The year-end estimate is a conservative estimate and does not include condiments such as oil, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar, nor the problem of starting fires when the solar panels cannot provide enough electricity as the weather gets colder.
But the most crucial issue here is the human element.
The decision to let Chi Xiaoyu come and stay was made because the situation was urgent at the time, and Chi Xiaoyu had been helping her and Yaya all along, even revealing her location and supplies for the girl who jumped off the building, whom she didn't know.
Although they had never met, in Qiao An'an's mind, Chi Xiaoyu was a good child who would not have bad intentions towards others.
If it weren't for wanting Grandpa Gu Bei to help Chi Xiaoyu remove the bullet, Qiao An'an would never have let the grandfather and grandson into the courtyard. After all, this is the apocalypse, and no one can guarantee that the grandfather and grandson won't do anything to harm them when the energy in the courtyard runs out. After all, the most vulnerable thing in the apocalypse is the human heart.
Especially since Grandpa Gu Bei brought a sniper rifle with him when he came.
Judging from the way he removed the bullets, he must have handled guns before, and his skills might even be quite good. If he really had bad intentions, they might not be a match for him.
Summer nights are hot to begin with.
Qiao An'an became increasingly agitated, so she poured herself a glass of water and went to the window for some fresh air.
As soon as I leaned over the balcony railing, I saw Grandpa Gu Bei standing in the yard smoking.
Grandpa Gu Bei also saw Qiao An'an on the second floor and waved to her, saying, "Can't sleep either? Want to come down and chat?"
When Qiao An'an saw the sniper rifle next to Grandpa Gu Bei's chair, she became wary, but still went downstairs.
Gu Bei was fast asleep in the living room downstairs.
When Dahei saw Qiao An'an come out with a cup in the yard, it thought there was food. It excitedly stood up and went to Qiao An'an's side, wagging its tail wildly. After confirming that Qiao An'an was only holding ordinary water, it disappointedly went back to its doghouse and growled a couple of times, as if it was accusing Qiao An'an of making it happy for nothing.
Qiao An'an sat down next to Grandpa Gu Bei with a glass of water in her hand.
Grandpa Gu took a couple of deep drags on his cigarette, then slowly began, "I kept telling Xiao Bei that his parents had gone to the shelter and would come to pick us up once they were settled. That's why Xiao Bei wanted to go with the car during the day. But actually, on the day the zombie virus broke out, we couldn't reach his parents by phone..."
Xiao Bei is a kind-hearted child; he wouldn't even step on an ant. Not only that, he's also polite and hardworking. If he stays, he can help you with a lot of chores.
The more Qiao An'an listened, the more she felt that something was wrong with what he was saying.
He asked, puzzled, "Grandpa, what do you mean by that?"
Grandpa Gu took a few deep drags on his cigarette, finishing it completely before smashing it on the ground. He then stood up, leaning on his sniper rifle. "I understand. After all, it's the apocalypse. Nobody wants to take in strangers under these circumstances. I'm almost eighty, and I'm content with living this long. I don't care about life or death. The only thing I can't let go of is my eldest grandson. I can leave now, but I just beg you to let him stay. He's only twelve; his life has just begun..."
Qiao An'an originally planned to kill both the grandfather and grandson.
Hearing what Grandpa Gu Bei said, she didn't know what to say for a moment.
Seeing that Qiao An'an didn't speak, Grandpa Gu Bei walked to the door with his sniper rifle and moved the heavy object blocking the iron gate: "If you don't say anything, Grandpa will take that as a yes!"
It was as if they had a telepathic connection.
