Chapter 19 Grandma Ma Xiaotiao and Gu Bei

When Gu Bei heard Ma Xiaotiao's grandmother mention his grandfather, his eyes immediately welled up with tears.

Grandpa's health had always been poor. After the apocalypse broke out, in order to ensure that he had food to eat, he would lie and say that he had already eaten.

After Grandpa fainted today, Gu Bei learned that his grandfather hadn't eaten anything all these days except for drinking some water and licking the bottom of his bowl.

Gu Bei wanted to give something to his grandfather to eat.

But apart from the rainwater we received this morning, we have no other food left at home.

In desperation, he turned his attention to the supply packs not far from his building's stairwell.

He didn't want to waste any more words with Grandma Ma Xiaotiao, so he wiped away his tears and said sullenly, "It's fine!"

Grandma Ma Xiaotiao, having lived to such an old age, naturally saw through Gu Bei's lie at a glance, but she didn't intend to expose it. She just wanted Gu Bei to believe that he could get the supply packs: "Your house is fine, but mine isn't. Xiaotiao is starving. I'm going to go out and get these supply packs. I think they're very close to my house. If I keep my voice down, I should be able to avoid the zombies and get the supply packs, right?"

Gu Bei was, after all, an eleven or twelve-year-old boy.

Hearing that Ma Xiaotiao's grandma was going to try and take the nearest supply pack from them, he got anxious: "Your family has already taken so much stuff, isn't that enough to eat?"

Grandma Ma Xiaotiao was very satisfied with Gu Bei's performance and made a move to go out and get the supply pack: "There's nothing I can do, my Xiaotiao only eats the chocolate in the supply pack!"

Although there were still about a dozen supply packs scattered around the neighborhood, only these three were the furthest from the horde of zombies and the closest to Gu Bei's apartment building entrance.

If all three supply packs are taken by Ma Xiaotiao's grandma.

Grandpa is truly beyond saving.

The thought that his grandfather, who had raised him since childhood and saved all the good food and toys for him, would die made Gu Bei open the apartment door and rush out without thinking.

The zombies in the neighborhood were quite far from the building where Gu Bei was located.

Gu Bei was at his most agile; he tiptoed toward the supply pack without alerting the zombies.

Just as he was happily walking toward the three supply packs, he saw Grandma Ma Xiaotiao holding a stone, making a throwing motion toward him.

In that instant, Gu Bei understood.

The zombies are located between his building and Grandma Ma Xiaotiao's building. After hearing the sound, the zombies will run towards one of the buildings.

Grandma Ma Xiaotiao talked so much just to entice him to come out and grab the supply pack. Once he came out, Grandma Ma Xiaotiao would make noise around him so that the zombies would find him. After he became the zombies' target, he would have no choice but to abandon the supply pack and run back into the building. When the zombies chased after him, Grandma Ma Xiaotiao could then safely take the supply pack away.

To get the supply pack, Grandma Ma Xiaotiao was willing to use human lives as bait.

This kind of refined egoism disgusted Gu Bei.

He had originally planned to take only two and leave one for Grandma Ma Xiaotiao, but now he was determined that even if he was bitten to death by zombies, he would carry all three supply packs on his back and not let Grandma Ma Xiaotiao benefit from them.

Just when he thought that Grandma Ma Xiaotiao was going to throw stones and he was going to die, he suddenly heard a miserable scream from Grandma Ma Xiaotiao's side.

Gu Bei looked over in surprise and saw that Grandma Ma Xiaotiao's hand, which was holding the stone, had been pierced by an arrow.

When Ma Xiaotiao's grandmother took it, it fell to the ground, and his arm was covered in blood.

Upon hearing the cries and smelling the blood, the zombies surged towards Grandma Ma Xiaotiao like a tidal wave.

Gu Bei realized what was happening, grabbed the three supply packs, turned around and ran back to the building. Only after closing the unit door tightly did he dare to look outside.

Because Grandma Ma Xiaotiao was very close to the building entrance, she had already taken refuge inside before the zombies rushed over. However, the zombies did not leave because of this; instead, they frantically rammed the building entrance, making it creak and groan as if it would be smashed open by the zombies at any moment.

Gu Bei desperately hoped that the door would be smashed open by zombies.

But then it started raining again. The rain diluted the smell of blood and made the zombies lose their target.

Finally, it stopped bumping into Grandma Ma Xiaotiao's apartment door and returned to its previous state of confusion.

Gu Bei reluctantly went upstairs. After unlocking the door to his second-floor apartment with his key, he immediately closed and locked the door.

Then she opened one of the supply packs, took out one of the two chocolates, tore open the wrapper, broke off a piece, and put it to Grandpa's mouth: "Grandpa, open your mouth!"

Grandpa Gu Bei opened his eyes and saw his eldest grandson feeding him chocolate. He thought he was hallucinating, but even if it was, he still saved the best food for his grandson: "Grandpa isn't hungry, Xiao Bei eat!"

Hearing his grandfather say this, Gu Bei's long eyelashes trembled involuntarily, and tears streamed down his face uncontrollably: "Grandpa, don't lie to me! Xiao Bei knows you haven't been eating properly these past few days. You'll die if you don't eat!!!"

Gentle tears fell onto Grandpa Gu Bei's face, and he realized with a start that this was not an illusion, but real.

He asked instinctively, "Where did this chocolate come from?"

Gu Bei choked up as he said, "I went outside to get the supply pack!"

Upon hearing Gu Bei say that he had gone outside, Gu Bei's grandfather propped himself up and sat up, raising his hand to hit Gu Bei: "What did Grandpa tell you? You can't go out, you can't go out! Why don't you listen?!"

Gu Bei had barely escaped death to return, and he was already extremely aggrieved. Now, his grandfather was blaming him, and he couldn't hold back any longer. He burst into tears, crying out, "If I don't go out, Grandpa will starve to death! I don't want Grandpa to starve to death!!!"

Seeing Gu Bei crying his eyes out, Grandpa Gu Bei couldn't bring himself to lower his raised hand. He could only reach out and pull Gu Bei into his arms, patting his back to comfort him and asking how he got the supply pack: "How did you get it when there are so many zombies outside?"
