Since three more people were added, the rice bag in the small courtyard has visibly shrunk.
Vegetables can be grown, but there's really no way for Mijoanan to grow them. Even if there were enough space in the small yard, it wouldn't be enough. It would be great if we could find some food from the forest ranger.
But right now, the most important thing is to bring the wild chestnuts back with us.
To save space, Qiao An'an, Chi Xiaoyu, and Gu Bei knocked off the spiky shells of the wild chestnuts that the forest ranger zombie had knocked down, leaving only the tiny, fingernail-sized wild chestnuts inside. Even so, they still filled two large bags. These things might save their lives when they ran out of food in the winter.
After doing all this, Qiao An'an let Gu Bei deliver the chestnuts home by himself in two trips, while she and Chi Xiaoyu went to find the forest ranger's place.
Gu Bei objected: "I want to go too!"
Qiao An'an earnestly advised: "You are still young and have no ability to resist danger."
Gu Bei retorted, "I'm not young anymore!"
Chi Xiaoyu glanced at Gu Bei: "Hurry up and carry the bag back!"
When Gu Bei saw that Chi Xiaoyu had spoken, he didn't say a word and went to carry the bags.
Qiao An'an and Chi Xiaoyu didn't know where the ranger's hut was, but the ranger who had turned into a zombie must have been alerted by their voices and come looking for them. In other words, the hut must not be far away, otherwise the ranger zombie wouldn't have been alerted.
The south side faces the direction of the small courtyard.
There couldn't possibly be a hut on that road; if they had made so many trips back and forth to the back mountain, they couldn't have missed it.
It seems that only east, west, and north are left.
The zombie crashed into the tree on the west side, so it was highly unlikely that it came from the east. Therefore, Qiao An'an and Chi Xiaoyu decided to start searching from the west and north.
They walked westward for about five minutes without finding anything. It was impossible to hear their previous conversation from any distance. Moreover, the road was covered with burrs, and their clothes and pants were covered with them. However, the zombie ranger shot by Chi Xiaoyu did not have any on him, so he obviously did not rush to the wild chestnut tree from this direction.
After walking back to the wild chestnut tree, the two headed north.
After walking for only two or three minutes, the two saw a simple prefabricated house halfway up the mountain. There was a small vegetable garden outside the house, which the forest ranger probably grew for himself when he was alive. However, the garden was overgrown with weeds because no one had taken care of it for a long time. Next to the vegetable garden, there was a pedicab used by the forest ranger to patrol the mountains. The two did not stay in front of the house for long and went straight into the prefabricated house.
The prefabricated house consists of only one single room with very basic facilities; there is not even a partition between the kitchen and the bed.
The space, which was so spacious that you could see the end at a glance, made it very convenient for the two of them to find supplies.
The power outage had lasted for several months since the apocalypse, so the food in the refrigerator was definitely inedible. Qiao An'an and Chi Xiaoyu didn't even open the freezer door, but instead opened the cabinet under the kitchen sink. Although it wasn't far from the community, the mountain road wasn't very convenient, so the forest ranger had stocked up on two 100-pound bags of rice.
One of the bags has already been started, and a small portion has been eaten.
Besides rice, the two also found a 20-pound bag of flour, three bundles of noodles, and two cans of luncheon meat.
Besides food, there were two or three unopened bags of salt, a bag of white sugar, two bags of brown sugar, a bag of MSG, two bottles of light soy sauce, a bottle of dark soy sauce, and a bottle of aged vinegar.
These are all still within their shelf life.
Qiao An'an moved them all into the tricycle parked next to the vegetable garden.
Just before leaving, Qiao An'an found the drone used by the forest ranger to patrol the mountains in the cabinet next to the bed, and also found half a dozen cans of Coke and a can of white wine with ginseng and goji berries under the bed.
She couldn't remember the last time she had drunk soda. She took a bottle and handed it to Chi Xiaoyu, then opened it herself and took a sip, instantly feeling refreshed.
Seeing that the tricycle was already full, and that Qiao An'an was about to put the ginseng and wolfberry wine in after putting out the cola, Chi Xiaoyu was a little puzzled. Why bring such a big, heavy, and fragile glass jar? "An'an, do you like to drink baijiu?"
Qiao An'an didn't drink alcohol when she was in school, and after graduation she was known as a "one-cup wonder," and by "one cup" she meant beer. She didn't drink alcohol, but she felt that Grandpa Gu Bei would like to drink, so she replied to Chi Xiaoyu, "This wine is for Grandpa Gu Bei, I think he would like to drink some."
It turned out to be for Grandpa Gu Bei.
Seeing this, Chi Xiaoyu stopped talking and took the ginseng and wolfberry wine, putting it in the back of the tricycle.
Actually, Chi Xiaoyu didn't really like Grandpa Gu Bei. She was always bothered that when Qiao An'an and Gu Bei went to the backyard to plant corn, Grandpa Gu Bei didn't fire his gun immediately. If Chi Xiaoyu hadn't shot an arrow with her injured arm, Qiao An'an might have been bitten by a zombie.
So after she finished making the ginseng and wolfberry wine, she volunteered to ride the tricycle.
They wanted to use their lack of experience as an excuse to dump the barrel of liquor.
But Qiao An'an stopped her, saying, "Wait a minute, I'm going to check on the vegetable garden."
The vegetable garden was overgrown with weeds taller than a person, what else could it be?
In addition, the sun is gradually setting and night is approaching. Wild animals will be out and about. Who knows what's in the grass?
It's too dangerous to go in rashly.
Chi Xiaoyu called out to Qiao An'an, "Let's not. What if a poisonous snake jumps out from deep in the mountains? It's not worth it."
Qiao An'an said that this little bit of grass was nothing. When she renovated the small courtyard, the grass in the courtyard was much taller than this. After saying that, she pointed to a tree in the grass and said to Chi Xiaoyu, "There is a hawthorn tree here. You haven't eaten fruit for a long time. I want to pick some hawthorns and make you some candied hawthorns."
Chi Xiaoyu was only fifteen years old, still a teenager. Although she had some resistance to candied hawthorn, it wasn't much.
Hearing that Qiao An'an wanted to make candied hawthorns, he hesitated for a moment, then went back into the temporary housing, found a bag, and picked them with Qiao An'an.
The hawthorn tree wasn't big, but it bore a lot of fruit. They picked more than ten kilograms of hawthorn, and since hawthorn is easy to store, it would last them for a long time.
Qiao An'an picked one and took a bite: "It's sweet and sour, quite delicious, you should try it."
Chi Xiaoyu took a bite with some skepticism, and almost spat it out. It was sour and astringent, how could it taste good?
Seeing Chi Xiaoyu's expression, Qiao An'an laughed: "You actually believed it!"
While the two were arguing, Teng Mai tripped over their feet. Qiao An'an parted the grass and found several ripe pumpkins. Unfortunately, two of them had been mostly eaten by small animals and were inedible. However, that didn't stop Qiao An'an from packing them up and taking them back to feed the little pig.
While picking pumpkins, Qiao An'an also saw a few eggplants and tomatoes. The eggplant and tomato seedlings had withered, and there were rotten eggplants and tomatoes lying on the ground. However, there were still a few fruits hanging on the dry branches. Their eggplants and tomatoes had just started to flower, and they would have to wait another month or two to eat them. But Qiao An'an really wanted to eat eggplant and salted fish stew, so she decisively packed up all the fruits hanging on the branches and took them away.
