The night wind in the mountains is quite cold.
In addition, there aren't many bamboo shoots in autumn, and the three of them only managed to dig for an hour or so, and those were the kind that were too old to eat.
All signs indicated that there were no bamboo shoots this season, but these days Grandpa Gu Bei gave Qiao An'an the impression that he had excellent life skills and didn't seem like the type to make such a mistake.
Qiao An'an couldn't help but wonder, "Grandpa, did you really bring us here to dig bamboo shoots?"
Grandpa Gu Bei seemed to have guessed that Qiao An'an would ask this question, and he didn't intend to hide it any longer. His old bones were tired from all this, so he sat down on the ground and took a breath before speaking: "The weather is getting colder every day, and we don't have enough clothes or blankets. I wasn't in such a hurry, but now those people across the street have started coming out of the community to search for things. There's only one supermarket outside the community, and it's summer now. The supermarket doesn't have many blankets or winter clothes to begin with. I'm worried that if we wait any longer, it will be too late to go there."
Today, after that commotion caused by those people across the street from our neighborhood...
The zombies are all gathered at the entrance of the residential area. The supermarket at the far west end of the area is relatively safe. We can avoid the zombie horde by taking the small path down the mountain.
This time, Qiao An'an finally understood.
Grandpa Gu Bei wanted to take them to the supermarket across the street to search for supplies: "No wonder he arranged for Gu Bei to stay behind. He couldn't bring his precious grandson along for something so dangerous."
Grandpa Gu Bei noticed the sarcasm in Qiao An'an's tone.
But he did not give up the mission because of this. Instead, he said, "I admit that I did have selfish motives. I even had selfish motives when you and Gu Bei were in the cornfield. But I did not want to harm you. I just wanted us all to have a peaceful winter. It's the apocalypse now, and there is definitely no heating. You don't want Ya Ya to freeze in the winter, do you?"
Speaking of Ya Ya.
Qiao An'an fell silent.
She had considered the issue of winter clothes and blankets at the beginning of the apocalypse, but it was summer then and winter seemed far away. In addition, she was afraid to go out alone to face the zombies, so she had been ignoring the issue of winter blankets. But now that it's getting colder and colder, if she doesn't think about it, her children might freeze.
After thinking for a long time, Qiao An'an said, "When we get there, let Xiaoyu stay across the street with the bow and arrow to provide backup, and the two of us will go into the shop."
When Gu Bei's grandfather came, he left the sniper rifle and bullets with Gu Bei.
Ostensibly, he was tasked with protecting the compound with a sniper rifle, but in reality, he was prepared not to return from this trip. Despite his age, he wasn't afraid of death: "No problem."
Chi Xiaoyu disagreed: "Sister An'an, stay here. I'll go to the supermarket."
Qiao An'an patiently explained to Chi Xiaoyu, "You can help us escape from a distance by shooting arrows, so I won't be of much use staying outside."
Although Chi Xiaoyu didn't want Qiao An'an to take the risk, after weighing the pros and cons, she had no choice but to agree.
The three of them followed the mountain path down to the westernmost part of the residential area, where Chi Xiaoyu, carrying a bow and arrow, lay in ambush in the woods.
Qiao An'an and Grandpa Gu Bei cautiously approached the only supermarket in the neighborhood.
It's called a supermarket, but it's actually just a large shop rented by a private individual. The vegetable, fruit, fish, and meat stalls inside are rented to nearby farmers, and only a small area at the very back is the supermarket.
Besides rice, flour, oil, salt, snacks, and alcohol, the supermarket also sells quilts and cheap sportswear. This supermarket was already overrun by zombies at the beginning of the zombie outbreak; all the floor-to-ceiling windows at the entrance were shattered, and the vegetable, fruit, fish, and meat stalls emitted a foul stench.
Qiao An'an initially thought there wouldn't be anything to take from this place, but to her surprise, she found a bag of sprouted sweet potatoes on the ground. Qiao An'an pointed to the sweet potatoes: "Can we plant these?"
Grandpa Gu Bei nodded: "We can plant them, but winter is coming soon, so we'll need to build a greenhouse. Let's go get some quilts first, and then we'll bring the sweet potatoes when we come back."
Many of the goods on the shelves had fallen to the ground, and many were trampled on.
But there are still many complete ones.
Qiao An'an and Grandpa Gu Bei planned to go get the quilts and winter clothes first, and then pack up the food on the shelf when they came back.
The two continued walking inside, where the shelves had changed from food to knives, cutting boards, cups, bowls, pots, and pans.
At this moment, Chi Xiaoyu used the walkie-talkie to remind Qiao An'an: "The people in the community are also coming to the supermarket, you guys come out quickly."
They haven't even received their winter blankets yet, and going out now would mean all their efforts are wasted.
Qiao An'an asked, "How far are they from here?"
Chi Xiaoyu: "Just left the residential area."
"There's still time."
Qiao An'an planned to quickly grab the quilt and leave before those people arrived.
She thought Grandpa Gu was too busy and told him to go out first: "Grandpa, you can take the sprouted sweet potatoes out with you. I'll go in and get the blankets."
Grandpa Gu Bei knew his own speed; staying would not only be of no help but also a burden to Qiao An'an. After telling Qiao An'an to be careful, he turned and walked outside.
Qiao An'an rushed to the bedding area. She was initially worried that if one or two slow-reacting zombies were left behind and didn't follow the main group, what would happen? Before coming, she even found a handy boning knife to carry with her.
To Qiao An'an's surprise, the place looked very clean. After picking out four thick quilts, she also wanted to take a few thick down jackets.
Qiao An'an took down the down jacket hanging there, but was surprised to find a sales clerk zombie standing behind it in a semi-dormant state. The sales clerk zombie was startled by Qiao An'an's action of taking down the down jacket and pounced on Qiao An'an directly.
The turn of events happened too quickly. Qiao An'an was tackled by the zombie sales clerk while holding the knife. Fortunately, she still had a large cotton quilt in her hand. At the critical moment, she threw the quilt at the zombie sales clerk. The zombie took a bite, but only bit down, sending feathers flying everywhere. It didn't bite anyone. In anger, it pushed Qiao An'an and the quilt against the wall.
