As Qiao An'an and Ya Ya were talking, Ya Ya accidentally dropped the chicken leg she was holding onto the ground.
Ya Ya was extremely distressed: "The baby's lost its chubby flesh."
The chicken leg was almost completely eaten.
Qiao An'an took out another chicken leg and gave it to Ya Ya: "If it's fallen, we don't need it. Here, eat this."
Ya Ya felt a little better after getting a new chicken leg.
Qiao An'an prepared to pick up the chicken leg bone that had fallen on the ground, tear off the meat, wash it with water, put it in her bowl, and put the bone in the trash can, planning to find a place in the yard later to bury it as fertilizer.
A few days ago, she saw earthworms in the place where she often poured out dishwater.
The planting manual said that this stuff can loosen the soil and increase its fertility. Most importantly, it can also be used as feed for crucian carp. She tried digging some up to feed the crucian carp, and to her surprise, the crucian carp loved it. However, there were too few earthworms; there was only enough for a few big fish, and the small fry couldn't get any food at all.
If you bury chicken bones and other things in the soil, earthworms should grow faster.
Before her hand could even touch the chicken leg, a dark creature darted out of the woodpile, snatched the chicken leg, and ran out the door.
Upon seeing the black shadow, Qiao An'an was so frightened that she didn't dare to move for a long time; it was her most feared creature—a mouse!
The rat was found in the woodpile in the kitchen, which meant there was likely a rat's nest there. The thought that the rat might have already multiplied in her woodpile and that the rat's home was right downstairs from where she slept made her feel like she was about to collapse. No, she had to find a way to get the rat out of her house.
She didn't even have time to eat.
They directly started moving the entire wall of firewood she had built to attract fans.
Although Ya Ya still wanted to eat the chicken leg, seeing her mother carrying such a heavy thing by herself, she suddenly felt that the chicken leg in her hand was no longer appealing. She put down the chicken leg in her hand, got up and walked over to Qiao An'an: "Mom, let me help you."
Other rats might jump out of the wood.
Qiao An'an wore thick gloves before she started moving the wood.
She dared not let Ya Ya come and move it.
This is the apocalypse. If you get bitten by a rat, you won't even be able to find a place to get vaccinated. "There's a thief stealing food from our house. Ya Ya is helping her mom watch the food at the table. Is Ya Ya able to watch the food?"
The apocalypse has only been going on for a little over a month.
But Ya Ya has already clearly realized the preciousness of food.
Before, her family could eat all kinds of good vegetables, as well as shrimp and steak. Since the apocalypse, they have been eating rice, steamed buns, noodles, garlic pork belly, and bok choy every day. Before, her mother would eat with her, but since the apocalypse, her mother always lets her eat first and only eats the leftovers after she is full.
Although Yaya is still very young, she already understands that food is precious now and that her mother is saving food.
Ya Ya obediently replied "okay," and then stared intently at the food on the table, as if afraid it would disappear into thin air.
Qiao An'an was amused by Ya Ya's appearance and said, "Ya Ya can help Mom watch the food while she eats."
Only after Ya Ya received permission did she pick up the chicken leg and continue eating.
Qiao An'an carried the wood from the kitchen out one trip after another.
Fearing that the wood would rot and attract insects if it got wet in the rain, she neatly stacked the wood under the eaves outside the window.
She herself doesn't remember how many times she moved.
She didn't finish moving all the wood until her back was so sore she could barely straighten it. Only after she finished moving it did Qiao An'an realize that there was indeed a mouse nest inside the wood, but there were no other mice in the nest, only some grains.
She took a bowl to hold the mixed grains, and surprisingly filled it more than halfway.
After putting the food into her bowl, she started cleaning the floor. Once she finished cleaning and washed her hands, it was already three or four in the afternoon when she got to the dining table. Ya Ya was so sleepy that she fell asleep at the table, still holding a big chicken leg in her hand and muttering, "Delicious."
Qiao An'an felt both sorry for him and amused.
She fetched some warm water, wet a towel, and gently wiped Ya Ya's hands and face clean. Then she carried her to the bed on the second floor and laid her down.
Then I went downstairs to reheat the food that had already gone cold.
Qiao An'an didn't heat up the chicken drumsticks or the meaty chicken wings. Instead, she took out a separate bowl, put them in, covered them with plastic wrap, and put them in the refrigerator, planning to heat them up for Ya Ya to eat later that night.
She ate some vegetables and then gnawed clean the chicken head, neck, feet, and ribs, which were devoid of meat. A chicken weighing about a pound, after removing the feathers and internal organs, was only about seven or eight ounces, mostly skin with little meat. However, the chicken she raised herself was really different from the ones she bought; it was incredibly fragrant, especially the garlic cloves in the braised chicken.
It was cooked until very tender and had absorbed the aroma of chicken. One bite was incredibly comforting and completely wiped away the fatigue from carrying wood earlier.
After finishing the meal, clean the table, bury the chicken bones and leftover rice in the corner, and go back to the kitchen to wash the pot.
Qiao An'an prepared to wash the large bowl of grains she had taken from the mouse nest and give it to the chicks to eat.
When rinsing.
Qiao An'an was surprised to find that several lotus seeds inside had already sprouted.
Aren't lotus seeds just the seeds of the lotus flower?
If I put it in a fishpond, will it grow into lotus root?!
Qiao An'an decided to temporarily stop eating eight-treasure porridge. She picked out about ten lotus seeds from the mixed grains and prepared to put them in the fish pond.
She didn't know if crucian carp would eat lotus seeds.
The fry definitely won't, their mouths aren't big enough, but the five big fish might be.
Just to be on the safe side.
Qiao An'an took off her shoes, rolled up her trousers, walked into the fish pond, and stuffed the sprouted lotus seeds one by one into the sand at the bottom of the pond.
