Chapter 30 The people in the pickup truck begin sweeping the buildings

The shot struck the concrete ground in front of everyone without warning.

The bullets in the gun made a piercing clanging sound as they scraped against the ground, blasting a fist-sized hole in the concrete in front of everyone. If that had hit a person, it would have blown their head off instantly.

The crowd stopped abruptly in their tracks, startled.

When Su Xinran encountered dozens of zombies when she entered the community, she thought the community had been completely overrun. She didn't expect there to still be living people.

She looked in the direction the gun had been fired.

The gun was sticking out from the rooftop balcony. She used to live in this building and knew that Zhou Ya's family lived on the top floor.

Su Xinran shouted towards the rooftop, "Sister Zhou Ya, it's me, Su Xinran! We're not bad people!!!"

For the past two months, Zhou Ya has been living alone in her room on the sixth floor.

Besides planning how to conserve food and how to preserve the rainwater she collected for longer, she used the focusing binoculars on her rifle to observe her surroundings. She already knew that these people were brought by Su Xinran.

It was precisely because these people were brought by Su Xinran.

Zhou Ya then fired: "You disregarded our lives and left with a truckload of food. You are a thoroughly bad person. How could the people you brought be good people?"

As soon as Zhou Ya spoke.

Everyone looked at Su Xinran.

It doesn't matter if it's someone else, but Chen Zhou is in this group too, and Su Xinran doesn't want Chen Zhou to misunderstand her.

Su Xinran retorted angrily, "Didn't I leave half of the supplies for you? If I remember correctly, there are four of you, right? So, half the supplies wouldn't be enough for four people to eat for so long. I'm guessing that you're the only one in the house right now, Zhou Ya. So, you're no less wicked than me. I could only take the food, but you actually killed someone!"

Zhou Ya spat fiercely downstairs: "Those three are alive and well, don't spout nonsense. Even if you kill someone, I won't kill them. I'm warning you, you'd better stay away from this building, or I won't hesitate to shoot your head off!!!"

Su Xinran was still angry and wanted to argue with Zhou Ya.

Chen Zhou stopped him, saying, "She's in a superior position, and we have no advantage if we provoke her!"

Su Xinran didn't listen to Shen Zhou's words at all. All she knew was that Shen Zhou's hand that was holding her arm was very hot. Her face flushed red instantly, and she nodded haphazardly.

Seeing that Su Xinran had stopped arguing with Zhou Ya, Chen Zhou gestured for everyone to step back. Then, he said to Zhou Ya upstairs, "Hello, upstairs resident. We are staff members from relevant departments who escaped from the East City Shelter. We only want to use this community to rebuild a shelter. We have no intention of taking over your territory. We will not approach your building. We will only operate in other parts of the community. Is that alright?"

The things that people claiming to be from relevant departments did last time are still fresh in my mind.

Zhou Ya gets angry whenever she hears the words "relevant departments".

However, her marksmanship wasn't very good, and the other side still had more than a dozen people. She had no ability to drive them away, and could only angrily say, "You better keep your word, or I won't hesitate to go on a killing spree!!!"

This residential complex has a total of 4 buildings. Building 3 is not yet renovated, and Zhou Ya's building is off-limits. Ma Teng's previous building has been ransacked, so the only place that is habitable now is Building 1.

After everyone packed up the things they had taken from the pickup truck, they entered the corridor of Building 1.

Building 1 has four buildings. They went into groups of two or three, entered each building, and searched for useful items from the first floor upwards.

Shen Zhou and Su Xinran were in a group. The two houses on the first floor of their building seemed to be unoccupied, as they were as clean as show flats. The door to the east-facing house on the second floor was open, probably because they had been tricked into going down there before. There was no food left in the house, and only blankets that they couldn't take with them were left in the closet. Since the weather was still warm, they didn't need these things, and Shen Zhou and Su Xinran planned to take them if needed later.

The door to the house across the street on the second floor was locked. After they pried it open with tools, they found a bunch of moldy noodles in the kitchen. There was also cooking oil, soy sauce, and vinegar on the stove, but they were all spoiled. There was meat and vegetables in the refrigerator, but because the power had been out for a long time, green liquid had started to leak out of it. They didn't open the refrigerator for fear of being poisoned.

On the living room table was a bag of Oreos, some loose mints, and a half-full bottle of mineral water. The half-full bottle had turned black and was undrinkable, while the full bottle was unopened. It seemed that this family had already left before the zombie virus outbreak, otherwise these things wouldn't still be there.

Su Xinran packed the entire bottle of mineral water, Oreos, and candy into her backpack, then inspected the master bedroom and the second bedroom again. Finding nothing useful, she went up to the third floor.

The two houses on the third floor are not yet renovated.

The fourth-floor east-facing apartment appears to be the home of an office worker. There is almost no food in the house; the refrigerator only contains beer and soft drinks. The office worker must have gone to work when the zombie virus outbreak occurred, leaving all these items untouched in the refrigerator, which has been without power for several months.

The soda had a two-year shelf life and was still drinkable, while the beer had a six-month shelf life and was already expired. However, Chen Zhou said that it was fine since it had just expired, so he put it in his backpack.

The family in the west-facing apartment on the fourth floor must have died in the very first few days of the apocalypse. Their belongings are still there; there's half a bag of rice and a five-pound bag of unopened flour in the cupboard. I'd guess this family died on their way to buy groceries, and the mother even took her child with her, because the refrigerator was empty except for the stored breast milk. The breast milk stored in the freezer bags had turned a dark greenish-black, but thankfully they were sealed in airtight bags, otherwise, the smell would have been incredibly pungent.
