Chapter 35 Storing Food for Winter 1

Gu Bei, who was in the residential area across the street, couldn't help but cheer when he saw this: "Good people are rewarded! That's wonderful!!!"

Chi Xiaoyu's lips unconsciously curled up into a smile.

Seeing this result, Grandpa Gu Bei was also very happy: "I didn't expect that the ugliest person here would actually be the kindest-hearted. No wonder there is an old saying that you can't judge a book by its cover."

Qiao An'an, however, had a different opinion: "Apart from the man who came to our community and the man who saved him, none of them are good people. These people are not only cowardly but also ungrateful. Those two men will not have a good outcome if they stay in the community with a group of such people."

Grandpa Gu Bei agreed, but he felt that the most important thing now was not to care about the people in the opposite community, but to care about themselves: "We harvested the corn and soybeans in the front yard ahead of time, which resulted in a loss of a lot of food for the New Year. We need to find a way to store enough food before winter comes."

With so many more people suddenly living in the neighborhood across the street, they won't be able to plant anything in their front yards anymore.

Qiao An'an suggested, "Let's go to the back mountain to collect the hazelnuts, pine nuts, and kiwis that you mentioned, Grandpa, and see if we can hunt some game while we're at it?"

Grandpa Gu Bei wasn't very supportive: "That man took zombies into the mountains before, so you must be very careful when you go into the mountains!"

The three nodded in agreement, leaving Grandpa Gu Bei to take care of Ya Ya, and then set off.

Qiao An'an, Chi Xiaoyu, and Gu Bei went through the tunnel to the bungalow behind the house. After feeding the piglets and chickens, they went into the mountains through the back door of the bungalow.

They quickly found a wild kiwi tree. Although it was called a tree, it was actually just vines intertwined together. It wasn't very tall and was easy to pick. They quickly picked a bagful.

After filling the bag, they tied it up and left it on the spot before continuing to walk inside.

The hazelnut tree was very tall, but luckily Gu Bei could climb trees. After climbing up, he picked the hazelnuts from the top, while Qiao An'an and Chi Xiaoyu picked them up from below, filling two whole bags.

After picking the nuts from one tree, they wanted to pick the pine nuts from the tree next to it.

But the pine trees were too prickly, and the pine nuts they managed to pick were all empty, so they finally decided to give up.

Anyway, there's too much for them to take with them.

Let's come again next time.

They didn't see any zombies on the way there and back. Qiao An'an also picked a lot of yellow wild chrysanthemums on the way back. These chrysanthemums, once dried, are used to make bitter chrysanthemum tea, which can improve eyesight and clear heat. It just so happened that everyone had been feeling a bit hot these past few days.

While picking wild chrysanthemums, Qiao An'an and her friends discovered a stream. The water in the stream was crystal clear and tasted sweet. They could also see many mountain crabs by turning over the small stones by the stream.

Once the crab was turned over, it immediately scurried into the stream.

Gu Bei quickly caught the crab that was trying to run away.

Crab catching can be very addictive.

The three of them put the bag of hazelnuts and kiwis aside and focused on turning over stones to catch crabs. Before long, they had caught a small bucketful.

Gu Bei, carrying the bucket, exclaimed excitedly, "We're having fried baby crabs for dinner! Yay!!!"

When the three returned to the front yard, it was already completely dark.

Since it's nighttime, there's no need to worry about being discovered.

Grandpa Gu Bei also brought Ya Ya and Da Hei into the yard.

Meanwhile, Ya Ya was holding onto the last big fish.

Qiao An'an was furious when she saw Ya Ya catch the last big fish: "Didn't Mom tell you that the little fish are still too small to eat? We're saving the last big fish for later. Why are you so disobedient?"

When Ya Ya heard Qiao An'an scolding her, she immediately cried feeling wronged.

Grandpa Gu Bei hurriedly explained, "This big fish was about to die. I asked Ya Ya to scoop it out. Rather than let it die from lack of oxygen, we might as well scoop it out and have a good meal."

Hearing what Grandpa Gu Bei said.

Qiao An'an realized she had misunderstood Ya Ya, so she immediately knelt down and reached out to wipe Ya Ya's tears: "I'm sorry, Mommy misunderstood you."

Children are easy to coax.

Hearing her mother apologize, Ya Ya immediately stopped crying and shook her head at Qiao An'an: "It's okay, Ya Ya forgives Mom."

When Ya Ya stopped crying.

Qiao An'an then stood up and asked Grandpa Gu Bei, "The fish have been doing well, and the lotus flowers have sprouted and grown leaves, so why did they suddenly lack oxygen?"

Grandpa Gu Bei analyzed for Qiao An'an: "Before, there were only small fish fry in the pond. A hundred fish didn't seem like many. Now the fish fry have grown to the size of a palm, and the pond is saturated. Right now, only the big fish are lacking oxygen. If this continues, most of the fish in the pond will also lack oxygen. If you ask me, it would be better to take out all these palm-sized fish and make them into salted fish. Just leave a dozen or twenty fish in the pond."

These fish fry are only the size of a palm now, so there won't be much even if they were made into salted fish.

Qiao An'an also planned to use these fish to meet their protein needs in winter: "The fish in the fishpond are densely packed, and I haven't heard of any lack of oxygen. There are also those ponds in Tibet that are shown on TV, where the fish are all crowded together and there is no lack of oxygen. The density of our pond is not even as high as that of the fishpond, so how can it be lacking in oxygen?"

Grandpa Gu Bei replied, "The fishpond is oxygenated, and the water in the wild is flowing!"

Oxygenation requires an oxygen pump and electricity, which their current conditions don't allow for.

There's no way to get fresh water.

After much deliberation, Qiao An'an could only scoop out about a hundred fish fry, each about the size of a palm, from the pool.

Qiao An'an originally planned to keep at least twenty or thirty fish to grow slowly, but Grandpa Gu Bei said to keep at most fifteen or sixteen. Qiao An'an had no choice but to do as he was told. After scraping off the scales and removing the internal organs of the fish she caught, she salted them. The book said to salt them for at least three days, and after the salt had penetrated the fish, she would put them in the sun to dry.
