Chapter 5 The most terrifying thing is the human heart.

In the empty night, Ma Xiaotiao's shouts carried far, even reaching the ears of Qiao An'an and Ya Ya across the street.

Ma Xiaotiao is a mischievous child who is two years older than Ya Ya. His grandmother is known for being overprotective of her children, and mothers in the neighborhood will stay far away from this family.

Qiao An'an didn't know this when she first arrived.

She even let Ya Ya and Ma Xiaotiao play together. Later, Ma Xiaotiao pushed Ya Ya down in order to grab a piece of candy. Ma Xiaotiao's grandma was speechless and actually praised Ma Xiaotiao for doing a good job. After that, Qiao An'an never let Ya Ya and Ma Xiaotiao play together again.

However, the relevant departments have already issued announcements.

Knowing that zombies are sensitive to light, they still dared to turn on the lights.

Just as Qiao An'an was about to say that Ma Xiaotiao's grandmother was spoiling her brat too much, she saw the zombies, who had been quietly wandering on the road, suddenly rush towards the iron gate of Ma Xiaotiao's community like madmen, as if they had suddenly found a target.

The houses that were demolished were not of very good quality to begin with.

The iron gate was soon smashed open by a large number of zombies.

The zombies rushed towards the entrance of Ma Xiaotiao's building like the wind. Fortunately, the property management had forced the owners to pay property fees and set up the elevators and escape stairs to require card access, so the zombies couldn't get to the second floor for a while. However, all the residents on the first floor suffered. The zombies smashed the windows of the first-floor residents, rushed into the rooms, and devoured the survivors.

Upon seeing this, the surviving residents of the high-rise buildings opened their windows and berated Ma Xiaotiao's family: "How could you be so immoral? You knew you shouldn't have turned on the lights, but you did! Not only did you bring zombies into the community, you also killed the people on the first floor!!!"

Grandma Ma Xiaotiao on the third floor retorted, "What's wrong with the child turning on a light? How can we be the ones who killed the person on the first floor? It was clearly his own stupidity in buying such a dangerous floor!!!"

Amidst the shouts and curses of the crowd, the zombies became increasingly active, stretching out their arms to reach for the second floor.

Seeing this, everyone chose to close the window and remain silent.

Even Ma Xiaotiao's grandmother turned off the light out of fear.

Just across the street, Qiao An'an couldn't hear what the crowd and Grandma Ma Xiaotiao were saying, but she could clearly see the nonchalant expression on Grandma Ma Xiaotiao's face when she turned off the lights. At that moment, Qiao An'an truly understood the real meaning of what the blogger meant when he said that the scariest thing is people.

It seems she'll have to be careful even in her own yard from now on.

After the zombies finished eating the survivors on the first floor and lost their target and light source, they began to wander aimlessly again.

Qiao An'an held the trembling Ya Ya in her arms, gently comforting her and singing nursery rhymes to lull her to sleep. Only when she was holding Ya Ya could Qiao An'an temporarily forget the apocalypse and the horror, and have the courage to live on.

Ya Ya didn't fall asleep for quite a while.

Even when asleep, his brows were furrowed and tears clung to the corners of his eyes.

Qiao An'an gently smoothed the wrinkles between Ya Ya's brows, but she just couldn't fall asleep.

She turned the computer screen to its lowest brightness and browsed various websites in the dark, downloading and saving relevant documents such as "Guide to Organic Fertilizer Production," "Agricultural Planting Technology Training," "Fruit Tree Planting Training," and "Aquaculture."

I also downloaded educational videos for Yaya, such as "Animated Series on Five Thousand Years of Chinese History", "Idiom Stories", "Explanations by Famous Teachers on Nine-Year Compulsory Education", and "Physics and Chemistry Knowledge You Can Learn at a Glance", to keep for her to study when she grows up.

By the time we finished, the sky was already beginning to lighten.

Exhausted, Qiao An'an shut down her computer, crawled into bed, and cuddled with Ya Ya before falling asleep almost immediately.

I woke up again when Ya Ya kissed me.

Ya Ya remembered what Qiao An'an said about never speaking loudly, and when she saw that Qiao An'an was awake, she lowered her voice and whispered, "Mom, Ya Ya is hungry."

Qiao An'an then realized that it was already broad daylight outside.

Looking at my phone again, it was already 8:30 in the morning. Usually, Yaya would have already eaten breakfast by this time.

She hurriedly got up and went downstairs to make formula for Yaya.

Just then, the pre-cooked porridge was ready. Instead of using water, she scooped some rice water from the top of the porridge to mix with the cold powder. Milk powder cannot be mixed directly with very hot rice water, otherwise the nutrients will be lost.

Then he scooped out a bowl of porridge with more rice from the bottom and ate it himself.

Waiting for the rice water to cool down.

Qiao An'an opened the cupboard drawer, intending to boil another egg for her daughter.

The eggs in the cupboard are free-range eggs collected from the countryside. Qiao An'an is reluctant to eat them herself, so she eats them slowly, and there are still about ten left.

Qiao An'an picked one up and rinsed it under the tap.

While washing them, I realized something was wrong; the eggs were too light and floated up.

She thought it was broken.

But when she smelled it, she didn't smell any foul odor.

In the past, she would have just thrown it away, but these were extraordinary times, and she didn't want to waste any food. So, she suspiciously took the egg out into the sun to see what was inside, and saw the beginnings of a chick.

Could it be... that the egg is going to hatch into a chick?

In rural areas, chickens are usually free-range, with roosters and hens mixed together. It's not impossible for their eggs to hatch into chicks.

Moreover, it's early summer now, and the temperature is high, so it's easy for the eggs to hatch even without a hen brooding.

Qiao An'an quickly took all the other eggs out into the sun to examine them.

Sure enough, chicks also appeared in the other eggs.

If all these chicks hatch successfully, does that mean that she and Yaya will have an endless supply of eggs and chicken in the future?

Chickens do make noises, right? Won't those noises attract the attention of the zombies outside the gate?
