This morning, we ate dumplings to send off those who were leaving.
There were a lot of leftovers from last night, and I didn't want to waste them, so Grandpa Gu made some folded bamboo baskets for lunch.
The rice was leftovers from yesterday.
The term "leftovers" refers to the practice of combining leftover food from the previous day with other food to cook together the next day, as people were poor and often couldn't afford to eat. In the past, these leftovers were considered delicacies.
Later, when people became wealthier, they felt that leftover food contained high levels of nitrites, so they basically stopped eating it.
But now it's the end of the world, so we don't care about these things anymore.
However, Grandpa Gu still took good care of the children. The adults ate hamburger, while the children ate mushroom and chicken soup noodles that Grandpa had stewed for more than two hours, which were very appetizing with the crisp and refreshing Fuling pickled mustard tuber.
Gu Bei felt sorry for his grandfather eating leftovers and wanted to switch with him: "Grandpa, you can eat mine."
Grandpa Gu said, "I don't want to trade with you. Zheluo is delicious. I've been craving it for a long time."
Chi Xiaoyu pushed the noodles in front of Qiao An'an, taking away the leftover rice that Qiao An'an hadn't touched yet: "Is it really that delicious? I want to try it too!"
Ye Jing was startled; Chi Xiaoyu had actually taken the initiative to be attentive to him.
Qiao An'an returned the noodles to Chi Xiaoyu: "This chicken soup noodles were prepared by Grandpa Gu for you children. You can eat the broth while you eat the noodles."
Seeing that Qiao An'an didn't take the noodles from Chi Xiaoyu, Ye Jing happily started eating: "Failed to flatter."
Enraged, Chi Xiaoyu kicked Ye Jing's stool, nearly knocking him over.
If Qiao An'an hadn't stopped them, the two children would have started fighting. It turns out that not all children are as sensible as Gu Bei; many have fiery tempers. Qiao An'an couldn't help but worry about Ya Ya. Her Ya Ya is only four years old (by Chinese reckoning) and is still a super obedient and clingy little dumpling. She wondered if Ya Ya would be like Xiao Yu and Xiao Ye Zi, arguing all the time when she was a teenager.
When Xia Lanlan heard that Qiao An'an had spent the whole morning clearing land and that Chen Zhou and the others would have to continue clearing land in the afternoon, she felt a little sorry for Chen Zhou and quickly said, "The three children have already had classes all afternoon. In accordance with the principle of combining work and rest, I think Ya Ya should draw by herself this afternoon. The two boys and I can't just sit idle all the time. Let's help clear land together this afternoon. Many hands make light work!"
Qiao An'an originally wanted to say no, but Gu Bei and Xiao Yezi were still teenagers. There were only five people in the small courtyard before, and she had no choice but to use child laborers. Now that there were so many adults, she couldn't continue to make the children work as child laborers.
However, neither Gu Bei nor Ye Jing were studious.
Ye Jing, who had been abducted as a child and had never attended school, was already overwhelmed by the morning's classes. Upon hearing Xia Lanlan say he didn't have to study in the afternoon, he immediately ran excitedly out of the prison, shouting, "Great! Finally, no more classes!!!"
Qiao An'an's idea is that even in the apocalypse, children's education should not be neglected.
But the teachers and children all said there would be no classes in the afternoon, so she didn't say anything more and led everyone to the empty courtyard to clear the land.
Qiao An'an originally planned to dig a fishpond to raise fish, but the fish in the pond all became sickly, perhaps due to the change in environment. Grandpa Gu said that they couldn't survive because of lack of oxygen and could only be made into salted fish.
So Qiao An'an decided to clear this large area for farming.
It took Qiao An'an and her two friends a whole morning to dig up the ten small vegetable plots that were no bigger than the palm of their hand.
Now they are facing a vast expanse of land, nearly twenty acres in size, excluding the parking area.
Without a tractor, it took Qiao An'an and her team seven or eight days to turn over all the land, divide it into plots, and leave ridges to facilitate sowing and fertilizing.
In the past seven or eight days, the pepper, eggplant, tomato, cucumber and strawberry seedlings that Qiao An'an cultivated with plastic wrap and cultivation boxes have grown quite a bit. It has now reached March and the outdoor temperature is around ten degrees Celsius. Everyone planted the various vegetable seedlings they had grown on the vegetable field.
They also planted corn and soybeans on the large tracts of land that had been reclaimed.
The principle of intercropping corn and soybeans was still followed.
In seven or eight days, Yan Ling's concussion had completely healed. The bruises on her face had turned from blue to purple, and it was only a matter of time before she recovered. The only thing left was her arm, which was still in a cast. In the midday sun of March, everyone's backs were covered in sweat, and her arm in the cast was numb and itchy. She asked Qin Chengguo, "When will my hand get better?"
Big Black, which Qin Chengguo carried out to sunbathe, couldn't help but bark in empathy.
While helping to water the corn seeds, Qin Chengguo replied, "Your hand injury will take a hundred days to heal, you're still a long way off! As for Dahei, it's good enough that it's alive. Don't make a sound, or you'll tear your wound open again, and I won't take care of you anymore!"
Yan Ling was devastated when she heard that it would take another hundred days before the cast could be removed.
Big Black, feeling a bit scared, fell silent. It wanted to recover quickly so it could help its owner guard the house, so it dared not bark anymore.
While everyone was busy and working hard.
Grandpa Gu, who was on guard duty on the second floor, suddenly contacted everyone via walkie-talkie: "There's a car speeding towards us from about 1,000 meters outside the prison. My eyesight isn't good enough to see the people inside. Everyone, immediately go into defensive mode!!!"
Everyone became alert when they heard an unknown car approaching them.
The prison's outer walls are very sturdy, with a height of over seven meters and a robust electric fence.
Although the power is now off, breaking in is still not an easy task. If Qiao An'an and her group hadn't used the masked man's identity to infiltrate, they would never have been able to wipe him out in one fell swoop.
