Chapter 10: Penniless
Jiang He followed the little boy through a narrow path and came to a courtyard that could be described as bare. He suddenly felt that the place that Grandpa Liu arranged for them was quite good. "Is this the house you live in?"
He looked around and found that except for three or four courtyards, the area behind the courtyards was almost a plain. This discovery made him frown.
"Well!" Seeing the expression on his father Jiang He's face, the little girl pinched the corner of his clothes and said, "Brother, if you don't want to..."
"It's okay, let's clean up the house first!" Jiang He rubbed his son's head and smiled, but in his heart he was cursing the child's uncle and aunt.
"Giggle!" A childish voice came from the room, and a child, probably only four or five years old, walked out. His hair was dry and his face was sallow, showing signs of malnutrition. His clothes were patched all over, and anyone with a discerning eye could tell they were not sewn by an adult from the crooked stitches.
The little boy pointed at the little girl and said, "Big brother, this is my sister Xiaoqi. My sister and I don't eat much. Are you willing to stay?" He was still a little uncertain and asked again, with anticipation in his eyes when he looked over.
"Yes, I do!" Jiang He nodded and agreed without hesitation. He felt that he had no other choice now. Although he was not a saint, he saw that the two children were obviously not well off. If he really abandoned them, they would most likely starve to death, but they would probably not live long in the future.
"Hehe, who is he?" The little girl spoke with a lisp, which was very different from those children who could pronounce words at just a dozen months old.
"Xiao Qi, this big brother will live in our house from now on, you can't be so rude." Although the little boy looks young, you can tell that he has good family education, which should be taught by his parents when they were alive.
"Oh, haha!" Xiao Qi was very well behaved. After being scolded by his brother, he quickly apologized, "I'm sorry!"
"Xiao Qi is so polite. Brother will give you a candy." Jiang He took out a White Rabbit milk candy from his pocket, opened Xiao Qi's palm, and put the candy on it.
"Haha, bunny!" Although Xiao Qi looked at Tang's expression with joy, he still turned his head to look at his brother and did not reach out to take it.
"It's just a candy." Jiang He saw the little boy's hesitation, so he took out another candy from his pocket and put it in his hand. "Just think of it as a gift for you guys when I first meet you, okay?"
The little boy looked at the smiling big brother in front of him, his expression fell into a trance. Looking at the candy in his hand, he couldn't remember how long it had been since he tasted sweetness. It was probably when his parents were still grandpas...
"Little boy, who is coming to your house?" An old voice was heard outside the door again, and an old man was standing at the door with a cane, looking inside.
"Fifth Grandpa, my father, the village chief, brought back a brother. From now on, our land will belong to him to farm." When the little boy saw the old man, he quickly took the candy, took Jiang He's hand and ran over, then introduced him with a smile on his face.
"Are you the educated youth who came here yesterday?" The old man was shakily helped in by his son. He looked the young man up and down before nodding, "He looks well-behaved, a young boy."
"Of course, this brother is the best-looking one among them, I picked him specially. Fifth Grandpa, do I have good taste?" Children are like this, they will be very happy as long as someone praises them.
